You could be right but, a number of years ago, some well-meaning people thought they would clean the Roxburgh memorial. They must have used some cleaning agent on the lower portion of the memorial - taking the grime and some of the paint and smearing it over the stone. You can see the effect if you examine the main picture I posted. If Smailholm is cleaned, let's hope it is done professionally.

Andrew John Hogarth – age 31 – Gunner (209304) 20th Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
Andrew died in the Brook War Hospital at Woolwich, London.
Born 1885 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Mary (Watson) Hogarth (died 1913) and of Andrew Hogarth of Smailholm.
Husband of Mary (Fleming) Hogarth of Friars Cottages, Smailholm who he married in 1910 in Smailholm.
Died on Service on 4 April 1917 and buried in Smailholm Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


Pte. A. LINDORES, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Lindores – age 21 – Private (201211) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander enlisted in November 1915 and as Private (8203) he joined his battalion in Egypt.
He served in Palestine where he was killed at el Mughar.
Born 1896 in Hume, Berwickshire. Son of Adam and Christina (Scott) Lindores of Sandyknowe, Smailholm.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


Pte. A. PRINGLE, A.O.C.
Andrew Pringle – age 35 – Private (032348) Ordnance Depot (Le Havre) Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
In 1911 Andrew, aged 26, was a butcher and was boarding at 81 Roxburgh Street in Kelso.
He died in the 40th Stationary Hospital at Harfleur, Le Havre.
Born 1884 in Wilton, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert (a policeman) and Elizabeth (Turnbull) Pringle of Smailholm.
Died on Service on 15 June 1919 and buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


Pte. J. WILSON, K.O.S.B.
Joseph Wilson – age 22 – Private (7432) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was a cattleman at New Smailholm, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in the 4th KOSB in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Carham, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of Joseph and Margaret (Wright) Wilson.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.
