I'm trying to track the birth details of Robert John Spence Wilson (I mean how difficult can that be!)
He is named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial and on a stained-glass window in Eccles Parish Church, Berwickshire as
ROBERT S. WILSON.

SNWM and the D&G Standard 9/12/1914 p.9 list him as born Ecclefechan, Hoddom Parish, Dumfriesshire but the 1911 census has him born Roxburgh.

CWGC has
Robert John Spence Wilson – age 26 – Private (29855) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.

Robert had been a gardener at Sunlaws House, Roxburgh for 9 years when he enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in December 1914.
(Source: D&G Standard 9/12/1914 p.9 and Jedburgh Gazette 18/5/1917 p.3)
Born c.1891 in Ecclefechan, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire.
Son of Robert Wilson of Springwells Farm, Eccles, Berwickshire.
(Source: Jedburgh Gazette 18/5/1917 p.3 and Army Registers of Soldiers effects)
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

I can't help feeling that I'm missing something really obvious and I'd be really pleased if someone could sort this out. Rolling Eyes

Thank you Derek Very Happy

You are spot on - the hand writing is awful so it could be Spence or Spencer.
Where Ecclefechan, Hoddom came from ????????
The birth entry names his parents as Robert Wilson and Elizabeth Cunningham who had married in 1880 in Earlston, Berwickshire.
Robert Spence(r) Wilson was born at Fairnington Farm, Roxburgh and Elizabeth died in 1923 at Maxton, Roxburghshire - so it looks as though they dotted about across the county boundaries.

Thanks for looking.
