PTE. P. McCALL, 1st BATTN. K.O.S.B.
Peter McCall – age 34 – Private (16856) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Peter was a ploughman at Edrom, Berwickshire. His family moved to Mertoun in 1909 where his father worked on the estate. Peter was chauffeur to Herbert Ostlere of Arkleby Hall, Aspatria, Cumberland when he enlisted in November 1914. He was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in May 1915 but was killed a month later.
Born 1881 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Catherine (Pike) McCall of Mertoun, Berwickshire and of Maxton, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Maxton Parish War Memorial and on the Parsonby & Plumbland Parish Church Memorial in Arkleby.


PTE. T. REID, 6th BATTN. K.O.S.B.
Thomas Reid – age 22 – Private (20654) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Tom was a ploughman at Magdalenhall Farm, Mertoun when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 but was killed two months later.
Born 1893 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of the late David Reid, formerly steward at Brotherstone Farm, Mertoun, (died 1901) and of Christina (Mabon) Reid of Longnewton Mill, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 17 December 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. J.H. SAVAGE, 12th H.L.I.
James Henry Savage – age 32 – Private (37217) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, transferred as Private (567186) to the 122nd Battalion, Labour Corps.
James was a gamekeeper at Mertoun Kennels when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised in December 1916 and went to France in March 1917 but before he was posted he contracted bronchitis and was evacuated home. He returned to France in January 1918 and joined the HLI but he was wounded in March and after treatment at the 18th General Hospital at Daniers he was again evacuated home. He was posted to the Labour Corps in France in August but he died a week later of sunstroke.
Born 1886 at Skirwith, Penrith, Cumberland. In 1911 he was working on his father's farm at Soulby Fell, Pooley Bridge, Penrith, Cumberland. Son of Joseph James and Hannah Dorothea (Atkinson) Savage of Mitton House, Lothersdale, Keighley, Yorkshire. Husband of Alice (Rawcliffe) Savage of 13 River Side, Preston, Lancashire who he married in 1917 in Preston.
Died on Active Service on 21 August 1918 and buried in Pernes British Cemetery, France.

PTE. A. WELSH, R.A.M.C.
Alexander Wallace Welsh – age 20 – Private (320360) 71st Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Alexander was a grocer in Edinburgh when he enlisted as Private (2376) in the 3rd Lothian Field Ambulance in November 1915. He served in the 3rd Scottish General Hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow during 1916 before he joined the 71st FA in Belgium in June 1917. Alexander was killed two weeks later.
Born 1897 in Mertoun. Son of Robert and Christina (Alison) Welsh of Clint Mains, Mertoun, of 13 Meadowbank Terrace and of 63 Restalrig Square, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 6 July 1917 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.

PTE. H. WELSH, 7th A.& S.H.

Henry James Welsh – age 22 – Private (2241) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Harry was in business in Stirling when he enlisted there. He landed with his battalion in France in December 1914 but just over a month later he became ill and died of pneumonia in the 11th Field Ambulance at Armentieres.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh. Son of Robert and Christina (Alison) Welsh of Clint Mains, Mertoun, of 13 Meadowbank Terrace and of 63 Restalrig Square, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 26 January 1915 and buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France


PTE. J.G. WHITE, 7th CAMERON HRS.
John Gullan White – age 25 – Private (S/15764) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a farm servant living at Bemersyde, Mertoun when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1893 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Ellen White (from 1906 Mrs James Fleming) of Bemersyde, Mertoun and of Nenthorn Lodge near Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

1939 – 1945

CPL. J.M. HAMILTON, R.A.F.
James Muir Hamilton – age 24 – Corporal (1556360) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns. He died in the British Military Hospital in Calcutta after an accident.
Born 1921 in Crailing, Roxburghshire. Son of James Muir Hamilton and Nellie Muir (Lothian or Robson) Hamilton of Danderhall, Mertoun.
Died on Service on 8 January 1946 and buried in Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery, Kolkata, India.
Also named on the Berwickshire High School War Memorial.
