The names on the first line of each entry are as they appear in a stained-glass window in the Parish Church, The ranks and service are from the paper Roll of Honour in the church.


FRED. J. CAMPBELL - TPR. NLD. HUSSARS
Frederick James Campbell – age 33 – Gunner (327183) 21 Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.
The Northumberland Hussars converted to a Light Anti-Aircraft and Anti-Tank Regiment in the Royal Artillery in February 1940. They were operating M-10 Achilles Self Propelled Guns in support of the Guards Armoured Division in Normandy when Fred was killed near Beaulieu. He was re-interred in June 1946.
Born 1910 in Edinburgh. Son of David Nichol Campbell and Christina (Mitchell) Campbell of Lambden, Greenlaw, Eccles. Husband of Catherine Laurie (Hunter) Campbell of Ford Village, Berwick-on-Tweed and of Kelso, Roxburghshire who he married in 1932 in Ednam, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 3 August 1944 and buried in St. Charles De Percy War Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Ford Parish War Memorial in St. Michael and All Angels Church in Ford.


ROBERT R. FORBES - PTE. AUSTRALIANS
Robert Ross Forbes – age 33 – Private (NX12974) 2/13th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Robert enlisted at Paddington, New South Wales.
Born 1909 in Boyndie, Banff. Son of the late Margaret Elizabeth (Lobban) Forbes (died 1915 in Killearnan, Ross & Cromarty) and of William (a Cattleman) of Greenlaw, Eccles.
Killed in Action on 21 August 1942 and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.


WILLIAM GALBRAITH - PTE. LINCS. REGT.
William Galbraith – age 30 – Private (3195692) 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.
Allied forces landed near Salerno on 8-9 September 1943 and there was fierce fighting for some days in the bridgehead that they established.
Born 1913 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Janet (Halliday) Galbraith who married in 1910 in Sprouston. Husband of Marion Turnbull (Rae) Galbraith of Duns, Berwickshire who he married in 1937 in Ednam, Berwickshire.
William was employed at Springhall Farm, Ednam and Marion was at Highridgehall Farm, Ednam when they married at the latter place. This farm is close to Birgham village in Eccles.
Killed in Action on 9 September 1943 and buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial and on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish.

IAN LYLE - W/OP. M. NAVY
Ian Lyle – age 20 – Third Radio Officer, S.S. Umona, Merchant Navy.
Ian was employed as an electrician in Kelso before he joined the Merchant Navy in 1940. The “Umona” sailing from Durban, South Africa to London with a cargo of maize, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-124 off the coast of Sierra Leone.
Born 1920 at Nisbet Mill in Crailing, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Veitch) Lyle of Broadloan, Kelso, of Eccles Mains Farm and of Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Killed by enemy action/ Lost at Sea on 30 March 1941 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Kelso Town and District War Memorial and on the Kelso High School memorial

and his twin brother

ALEX. LYLE - SGT. R.A.F.

Alexander Lyle – age 22 – Sergeant/Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (1067838) 101 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Alexander's Wellington bomber had taken off from RAF Bourn in Cambridgeshire for a raid on Hamburg but the aircraft crashed near Bremen. The crew were buried in Delmenhorst but were re-interred in Becklingen in August 1946. Born 1920 at Nisbet Mill in Crailing, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Veitch) Lyle of Broadloan, Kelso, of Eccles Mains Farm and of Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1942 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.

REGINALD W. LEE - DVR. R.A.S.C.
Reginald William Lee – age 40 – Private (T/108660) Royal Army Service Corps.
Reginald was chauffeur at Eccles House when he enlisted at the outbreak of war and he served in France and Belgium before being evacuated from Dunkirk. He was killed in an accident in Northern Ireland.
Born 1900 in Geddington, Kettering, Northamptonshire. Son of William Shortland Lee and Emma Scotaney (Clow) Lee of Kettering. Husband of Annie Bell (Robinson) Lee of Eccles who he married in1927 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire.
Died on Active Service on 18 October 1941 and buried in Lilliesleaf Churchyard. (CWG)

THOMAS PAXTON - F/SGT R.A.F.
Thomas Galbraith Paxton – age 20 – Flight Sergeant (1053584) 30 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Thomas was educated in Eccles and at the Berwickshire High School in Duns before he became a Tax Officer with the Inland Revenue in Penrith, Cumberland in 1938. He joined the RAF in 1940, was sent to Southern Rhodesia for flight training and was posted to the Middle East as a Sergeant for defensive missions in Egypt in April 1941. Promoted to Flight Sergeant in early March 1942, he accompanied 30 Squadron when it was sent to the Far East aboard the HMS Indomitable. The Squadron moved to Ceylon in order to defend the island, flying their Hurricanes from Colombo Racecourse and on 5th April he was engaged in the interception of the first attack launched from Japanese aircraft carriers. During the battle he shot down two Zero aircraft but was hit and forced to abandon his burning aircraft. Tom was picked up and taken to hospital with second degree burns but he died two days later from secondary shock.
Born 1921 in Maxton, Roxburghshire. Son of William Hogg Paxton and Margaret (Galbraith) Paxton of Ferneyrig, Birgham, Eccles.
Died of Wounds on 7 April 1942 and buried in Colombo (Kanatte) General Cemetery, Sri Lanka.
Also named on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish..


PETER L. PURVES - L/BDR. R.H.A.
Possibly:
Peter Lillie Purves – age 24 – Lance Bombardier (838717) 1 Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery.
Born 1916 at Kersquarter in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Janet Ramage Purves. Husband of Alice M. (Hall) Purves of Bethnal Green, London who he married in 1937 in Bethnal Green.
Killed in Action on 9 February 1941 and buried in Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya.


LESLIE E. ROSS - PIPER, K.O.S.B.
Leslie Ewing Ross – age 23 – Piper (3189150) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Leslie and his family came to Burnside, Lauder, Berwickshire in 1937 and he was a member of the Territorial KOSB. He was an expert piper and joined the KOSB Band when he enlisted. Leslie landed with his battalion at Ostend in October 1944 and took part in the assault landings on Walcheren Island, at the mouth of the Scheldt. They then fought through into Germany.
Born 1921 at St Mary's Loch in Megget, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Catherine (Ewing) Ross (died 1944) and of David Ross of Newbigging Walls, Lauder, Berwickshire and of Eccles.
Killed in Action on 7 January 1945 and buried in Brunssum War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Lauder Parish War Memorial.

JOHN S. SMYTH - F/O. R.A.F.
John Scott Smyth – age 38 – Pilot Officer (118650) 158 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Jack was well known in the Borders as a motor racing cyclist and he farmed at Birgham Haugh, Eccles for some years before he joined the RAF. He was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (939824) in March 1942 and six months later he was the navigator in his Halifax bomber which had taken off from RAF East Moor in Yorkshire for a raid on the Krupps works at Essen but the aircraft crashed near Krefeld.
Born 1904 in Eccles. Son of the late John Smyth (died 1940) and the late Elizabeth Jane (Glahome) Smyth (died 1941) formerly of Birgham, Eccles. Husband of Alice Mary (Smith) Smyth who he married in 1936 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 17 September 1942 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish.


RONALD S. TULLOCH - LT. R.E.
Ronald Smith Tulloch – age 23 – Lieutenant (194282) Royal Engineers attached to 5 Field Company. West African Engineers, Royal West African Field Force.
Ronald was educated at Abbey St. Bathans, Berwickshire and at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. He went on to study engineering at Edinburgh University and was commissioned from the University's OTC in July 1941. In early 1943 he was posted to West Africa and then to India before taking part in the Burma campaign.
Born 1920 at Bridgend in Duns, Berwickshire while his father was schoolmaster at Abbey St Bathans. Son of Laurence Andrew William Tulloch and of Bessie (Smith) Tulloch of the Schoolhouse, Leitholm, Eccles and of North Berwick, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 25 January 1944 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.
Also named on the Leitholm War Memorial in Eccles Parish.


THOMAS WOOD - F/O. R.A.F.
Thomas Wood – age 22 – Flying Officer (165019) 418 (Royal Canadian Air Force) Squadron, Second Tactical Air Force, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Thomas was educated at Leitholm School and at Berwickshire High School in Duns before he became a surveyor for Messrs Wimpey. He was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (1567387) in April 1944 and promoted in October. His squadron, flying Mosquitos, was transferred to close support work with the Second Tactical Air Force in the Low Countries in November. His remains and those of his pilot, Flight Lieutenant Hugh Stinson Glassco (J/5131) R.C.A.F., were recovered from Walsdorf Cemetery in Germany and re-interred at Rheinberg in February 1948.
Born 1922 at Leitholm, Eccles. Son of the late Annie Ormiston (Easton) Wood (died 1941) and of Andrew Wood of East End, Leitholm.
Killed in Action on 5 January 1945 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Leitholm War Memorial in Eccles Parish.

Eccles Parish Church apparently closed to regular services on Sunday 9th April. This wasn't publicised locally, unless just in the village.

It was already united with Leitholm.
