Re - Janet Scott Portingale. She was one of 30 Army Nurses (27 QAIMNS - 3 TANS) who were lost when the S.S. Ceramic was sunk on 7th December 1942 West of the Azores by German U-boat U-515, commanded by Korvettenkapitan Werner Hanke.

The U 515 was eventually sunk by the USS Chatelain in the Atlantic on 9th April 1944. 53 survivores included Werner Henke who, whilst a POW in the USA, made a deliberate attempt to escape on 15th June 1944. He ignored two challenges while walking towards the fence and again whilst climbing the fence and was fataly shot. He is buried in the Soldiers Cemetery, FortGeorge G. Meade Cemetery, Maryland USA.

Any suggestions as to Janet Portingale's connection with Scotland?

Tony

I suspect one or both of her parents were Scots as she is listed on the SNWM. She / they could have been resident here prior to her death. She was, apparently, born in South Africa.

There are exceptionally few Portingale's born/married/died in Scotland, none are named William.
So I imagine the mother Helen Scott (a very Scottish name) was from Kirkintilloch? There are four possible candidates born there between 1890 and 1920.

In regards to other Kirkintilloch war Dead. Amongst the names listed is my cousins great grandfather Patrick Braiden who was 38 years old when killed in action.

James Keir/Kerr

His surname is recorded as Kerr by the Army, CWGC and SNWM but Keir on the memorial and in the press.

(Glasgow Herald 23rd April 1915)
"Mrs Keir, residing at Townhead, Kirkintilloch, has received intimation from the War Office that her husband, James Keir, a Private in the 2nd Scottish Rifles, has died from wounds received in action on March 10. Keir was a Special Reservist, and had been in the trenches since November. He was employed as a miner at Woodilee Colliery."

(Kirkintilloch Herald 28th April 1915)
"Mrs Keir, residing at Townhead Street, Kirkintilloch, received intimation from the War Office on Thursday that her husband, Private James Keir, of the 2nd Scottish Rifles, had died from wounds received at Neuve Chapelle on the 10th March. No particulars are yet to hand as to what were the nature if his wounds or in what hospital he was lying. Private Keir was one of the special reserves, and put in his training at Hamilton. Prior to the war he was employed as a miner at Woodilee Colliery. He had been at the front since November. Some weeks ago, in the trenches, while in the act of receiving a sheet of note paper from a comrade, a bullet came between the two outstretched hands and went right through the sheet of paper. Private Keir sent the piece of notepaper home as a souvenir. He leaves a widow and two young children."

Mills, William

Died of wounds but has no known grave.

(Kirkintilloch Herald 18th November 1914)
"On Friday morning last Mrs. Mills, residing at 12 Kilsyth Road, Kirkintilloch, received intimation from the War Office that her husband, Lance-Corporal Wm. Mills, of the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, had died from the effects of wounds received at the battle of Yser on the 31st October. It was gathered from the information received that Lance-Corporal Mills, after being wounded, was conveyed to an ambulance waggon. His wounds were however, so serious that he died in the hands of the ambulance men, and was buried at Yser on the same date. It was a terrible blow to poor Mrs. Mills, who is left with two little boys, the oldest of whom went to school for the first time on the day his father left for the front. Mrs Mills' maiden name was Jack, and she is well known locally. Mills was a reservist, and went through the Boer War, for which he had two medals."

Oddly he is remembered by his alias on the memorial when you would expect his real name to be used, as he would have been known by it in his home town.
