On re-checking the name panels, I notioced that NONE of the men on Willie's list (on Page 1 of this thread) has been added.

Or the man Derek found ....... Confused

I wonder why - perfect opportunity I would have thought?

Hi Anne,

This is an e-mail I sent to Col. Jim Christie (Bridge of Allan Community Council), on the 19th.May 2009, as yet I have received no reply.

Hi Jim , I have been down at the archives this morning trying to find some information on the men missing from the Bridge of Allan war memorial.

The missing men I was searching for were:- Pte. John Galloway, Cameron Highlanders, Born and Resided, Bridge of Allan.

Pte. W. Hyslop, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Born and Resided, Bridge of Allan.

Gunner G.G. Mollison, Royal Field Artillery, Resided in Bridge of Allan.

My research was in the Stirling Observers 1916 and 1917.

In the Stirling Observer August 22nd.1916, Page 3, Col. 3, "Airthrey Soldier Missing", I found the report of Pte. John Galloway, reported missing.

Continuing my research into 1917, I found in the Observer, June 5th. 1917, page 3, Col. 1, "Private John Galloway", the details confirming his death, which I am sending to you as per attachment above.

I continued my research to the last Observer of 1917, but could find no reference to, Pte. W. Hyslop, Died 24/04/17, or Gunner G.G. Mollison, Died 24/09/17.

Hope this information is useful to you.
Can you please confirm receipt of this e-mail?

Willie Stevenson.

Thanks for letting us know the situation Willie.

Do you think in the end it came down to money? Obviously there's no room on the existing panels to squeeze any more names on - but I would imagine that a wee extra panel wouldn't have been that expensive?

The 'Committee' may not have reckoned on someone coming along and upsetting their wee apple-cart.

Anne

P.S. Although the memorial has been all refurbished, I actually preferred it the way it was. It seemed to have a lot more character. Still, probably in another 90 or so years, it'll eventually get back to the way it was. Wink

Hi anne,
As far as I am aware the Community Council were going to add names missing from the memorial, it was certainly mentioned in speeches made at the rededication ceremony, it may be that they are trying to find names right up to the present day, I don't know, I was just a little concered when I didn't even get a reply to my e-mail. Anne I've got the report with photo from the Observer of PTE. Galloway which I would like to add to the forum, it's on an e-mail attachment, I don't know how to do this, can you help me?

Willie.

Thanks Anne,

I really appreciate that. You may now understand my disappointment at not receiving an acknowledge of my e-mail to Col. Jim Christie. This man was not only born and resided in Bridge of Allan but also worked there, not only that but it looks like he did all that, a few hundred yards from where the Bridge of Allan Memorial stands . If there is anything I can help you with don’t hesitate to contact me, I will be delighted to help you in any way I can.

Willie.

To add to what Anne provided.

(Glasgow Herald 25th March 1915)
"In a letter to a friend in Bridge of Allan, Lance-Corporal John Carmichael, of the 1st Black Watch, tells how another Bridge of Allan man, Private Charles Williams, of the same regiment, met his death. The writer, who has only recently returned to the front after having been invalided home, says :-"Previous to coming here we had the 2nd Battalion lying about a mile from our billets. I met two of the "Bridge" chaps - Johnnie Salmond and Jimmy Rae - and they were both looking very fit. I have met Wilson and McLaren of our own Battalion, also Andrew McLeish. I received information yesterday as to how Charlie Williams met his death. He was on his way to regimental headquarters with a few others to get a piece of wood to make a cross for a chum of his who had fallen when a shell burst in the midst of them, killing him and wounding the others."
