ALEXr. RUTHERFORD, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Alexander Rutherford – age 20 – Private (4485) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a baker in Lauder and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of James and Janet (Wilson) Rutherford, of Jessiefield, Stow, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Stow Parish War Memorial.


ADAM GUNN SCOTT, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Adam Gunn Scott – age 30 – Private (29398) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was employed as a tailor with Aikman & Co in Lauder when he enlisted in the summer of 1916.
Born 1887 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. Son of Adam Gourlay Scott and of Euphemia (Baillie) Scott, of Stow, Midlothian. Husband of Janet Quarrie (Wylie) Scott of 13 Elgin Place and of 5a, Dewar Place, Edinburgh, and of Bank Cottage, Lauder who he married in 1911 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Stow Parish War Memorial.


ARMOUR SCOTT, SAP. ROYAL ENGINEERS
Thomas Armour Scott – age 26 – Sapper (81099) 76th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Thomas joined his company in France in November 1915 where they were serving with the Guards Division. He died in the 46th Casualty Clearing Station at Proven near Ypres in Belgium.
Born 1890 in Lauder. Son of the late Andrew Scott (died 1913) and of Mary (Whitson) Scott of The Row, Lauder.
Died of Wounds on 24 June 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial as Thomas A. Scott.

ADAM SKELDON, PTE. A.&.S.H.
Adam Tulloch Skeldon – age 33 – Private (235338) 4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
In November 1915 Adam was a gardener, living at High Street, Lauder when he was injured in a car accident. He enlisted as Private (4756 & 302222) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but he was transferred to the Seaforths in France.
Born 1883 in Oldhamstocks (Haddingtonshire) East Lothian. Son of the late Isabella (McKenzie) Skeldon (died 1887) and of David Skeldon of Oldhamstocks, near Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. Husband of Helen or Nellie (Preston) Skeldon, of East Pinkerton, Dunbar, East Lothian who he married in 1910 in Oldhamstocks.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Oldhamstocks Parish War Memorial.


JAMES STEVENSON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Stevenson – age 19 – Private (6471) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
As a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB James was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Edinburgh as James McLaren Stevenson. Son of James and Margaret (Richardson) Stevenson of The Row, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


JOHN STUART, PTE. SEAFORTHS
John Stuart – age 21 – Private (S/5115) Depot 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
John was a gardener at Floors Castle in Kelso when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with the 7th Seaforths at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was wounded during the battle at Loos in September. He was posted to 2nd Battalion in December 1915 but he became ill with enteric fever in September 1916 and was evacuated to hospital in England. He was able to undertake light duties at the battalion Depot but became ill again and died of pneumonia in hospital in Croydon.
Born 1895 in Dunfermline, Fife as John Stewart. Son of Robert Stuart (formerly gardener at Thirlstane Castle, Lauder) of the Mansion House, Tollcross Park, Glasgow, and of Flora (Wotherspoon) Stuart who married in 1893 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire as Stuart.
Died on Service on 26 February 1917 and buried in Lauder Cemetery. (CWG)

JOHN JAMES TODD, PTE. CANADIANS
John James Todd – age 24 – Private (426762) 3rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John was farming when he enlisted in the 46th Battalion at Regina, Saskatchewan in April 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in October and was posted to the Machine Gun Section of the 3rd Battalion in France in June 1916. John died in the 35th Casualty Clearing Station at Doullens.
Born 1892 in Lauder. (Source: Service record but I cannot trace) Son of William and Isabella Lillico (Barrie) Todd of Trabrown, Lauder who had married 1890 in Duns, Berwickshire as Tod. Grandson of Mrs Barrie of Berryfell, Hawick.
Died of Wounds on 6 September 1916 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


WILLIAM TODD, L/CPL. K.O.S.B.
William Halliburton Todd – age 23 – Lance Corporal (200243) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a postman in Lauder and had been a member of he Territorial 4th KOSB since 1912. He was mobilised in August 1914 and was on home service as an Instructor of Signalling until posted to the 2nd KOSB in August 1917. William was fatally wounded at Passchendaele and died in the 54th General Hospital at Wimereux.
Born 1894 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of George Renton Todd and of Mary (Halliburton) Todd of Mason House, Lauder.
Died of Wounds on 12 November 1917 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


WILLIAM TORRIE, PTE. AUSTRALIANS
William Torrie – age 27 – Private (5207) 48th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
William and his younger brother Bertram were farming at Denninup, Boyup Brook in Western Australia when he enlisted in December 1915. He sailed from Freemantle in March 1916 and, after further training in Egypt, he joined his battalion in France in July but he was killed two weeks later.
Born 1888 in Lauder as William Graham Torrie. Son of the late Margaret (Graham) Torrie (died 1896) and of the late William Torrie (died 1912) of Lauder. Step-son of Mary Pringle (Graham) Torrie who married William in 1900 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 6 August 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2, France.
Also named on the Boyup Brook War Memorial.
An older brother, George Torrie of Kulikup, WA, returned to Australia in April 1919 having served with the 12th Light Trench Mortar Battery as Private (4014).

JAMES WELSH, PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Hunter Welsh – age 27 – Private (201222) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted as Private (8215) and joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916. He served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1891 in Selkirk. Son of John and Alison (Hunter) Welsh of Blainslie, Lauder and of 29 Castle Street, Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Selkirk War Memorial.


GEORGE WHITE, PTE. K.O.S.B.
George White – age 21 – Private (4435) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was employed as a surfaceman by the North British Railway Company and, together with his brother John (see below), he was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. They were mobilised in August 1914 and landed with their battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. George became ill and was evacuated to hospital at Mudros on the island of Lemnos where he died of pneumonia.
Born 1892 in Lauder. Son of Isaac (Thirlestane Estate joiner) and Eliza (Jackson) White of Mid Row and of Wyndhead Lodge, Lauder.
Died on Active Service on 27 November 1915 and buried in Portianos Military Cemetery, Mudros, Lemnos, Greece.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

Frederick Emanuel Sheppard – age 19 – Air Mechanic 2nd Class (73448) Royal Flying Corps.
Frederick was an auto mechanic living at Park Avenue, Philadelphia, USA when he enlisted in the RFC in Canada in August 1917. He contracted pneumonia and died in Toronto, Ontario.
Born 1897 in Lauder. Son of the late Lillias Simson (Wilson) Sheppard of the Black Bull Hotel, Lauder (died 1906 in Lauder) and of Frederick Emanuel Sheppard of 525 South Palmetta Avenue, Daytona, Florida, U.S.A.
Died on Service on 26 January 1918 and buried in Toronto (Prospect) Cemetery, Canada.

1939-1945


DONALD A. BIRD, LIEUT. R.A.M.C.
Donald Alfred Bird – age 26 – Lieutenant (99103) Royal Army Medical Corps attached to the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment.
Donald had his medical training at Edinburgh University and became a Licentiate of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons in September 1939. That same month he gained a commission in the RAMC. The 1st East Surrey was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force in October and was evacuated from Dunkirk in May–June 1940.
Born 1914 in Canada. Son of Alfred and Helena A. (Tarrance) Bird, of Blackchester, Lauder, Berwickshire. They had married in 1912 in Calgary, Alberta.
Killed in Action on 18 June 1940 and buried in Malo-Les-Bains Communal Cemetery, Dunkirk, France.
Also named on the Lauder West Church memorial and on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.


DAVID COLVILLE, CAPT. K.O.S.B.
David Colville – age 25 – Captain (78234) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was educated at Eton College and was a cadet lance sergeant in the O.T.C. when he was commissioned in the 4th KOSB in November 1938. He landed with his battalion in Brittany in France in 1940 and landed at Ostend in Belgium in October 1944. He led his troops in the assault on Walcheren Island, at the mouth of the Scheldt, in November. David was buried in Marienbosch Cemetery, Nijmegen but was re-interred in Jonkerbos in April 1947.
Born 1920 in Shettleston, Glasgow. Son of David and Elizabeth (Fraser or Thompson) Colville of Chapel-on-Leader, Earlston, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 18 February 1945 and buried in Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on the Earlston Parish War Memorial, on the Earlston Parish Church memorial and on the Holy Trinty Episcopal Church memorial in Melrose, Roxburghshire.

JOHN ELLIOT, M.C. MAJ. K.O.S.B.
Jack Elliot, Military Cross – age 24 – Major (88447) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Jack was educated at the Loretto School in Musselburgh, where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps, until December 1938. He was commissioned in the Territorial KOSB in May 1939 and mobilised at the outbreak of war. He landed with the 6th KOSB at Normandy in June 1944 and was wounded at Le Haut de Bosq, south-west of Caen. For his actions he was awarded a M.C. Jack was killed while leading his men during the attack on the German town of Goch. He was buried at Udem but was re-interred at Rheinberg in July 1946.
Born 1921 in Edinburgh. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Louisa Smithson (Lindsay) Elliot of Wedderlie, Westruther, Berwickshire and of Thirlestane, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 18 February 1945 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on an individual memorial in Lauder Parish Church, on the church memorial, on the Westruther Parish War Memorial and on the Loretto School memorial.


THOMAS NORMAN ELLIOT, A.B. SEAMAN R.N.
Thomas Norman Elliot – age 24 – Ordinary Seaman (LT/JX 190062) H.M. Patrol Yacht Nirvana, Royal Naval Patrol Service.
Norman was brought up by his aunt Mrs. J. Rutherford of Darnick near Melrose, Roxburghshire and was a member of the 1st Melrose Company of the Boys Brigade. He was working at the Douglas Hotel in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1939 and he was training on the “Nirvana” when he was drowned. He was with a group of servicemen returning from a dance in St. Mawes, Cornwall when the small boat crossing the River Percuil to St. Anthony capsized. Eight of the men drowned.
Born 1916 in Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire. Son of the late John Elliot and of Margaret (Jardine) Elliot of 14 East High Street, Lauder.
Died on Service on 29 September 1940 and buried in Falmouth Cemetery, Cornwall.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on the Melrose Church memorial as Norman Elliot and on the Darnick Village War Memorial as N. Elliot.

GORDON HODGE, SGT. R.A.F.
Gordon Hodge – age 25 – Sergeant (1334463) 49 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
George enlisted in February 1941 and was an air gunner when his Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire for a raid on Wismar on the Baltic coast but the aircraft was not heard from again.
Born 1917 in Galston, Ayrshire as Gordon MacCrae Hodge. Son of John and Mary (Jamieson) Hodge of Thirlestane, Lauder.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1942 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


VISCT. IVOR C. MAITLAND, LIEUT. LOTH. & BDR. HORSE
Ivor Colin James Maitland, Viscount Maitland – age 27 – Lieutenant (94405) 2nd Lothians and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps.
Ivor was educated at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. He was commissioned in the Royal Armoured Corps in August 1939.
Born 1915 in Dublin, Ireland. Son of Major Ian Colin Maitland, 15th Earl of Lauderdale, and of the Countess of Lauderdale (Ethel Mary Bell-Irving) of Lauder. Husband of Viscountess Maitland (Helena Ruth Perrott) of Makerstoun, Roxburghshire, of Thirlestane Castle, Lauder, and of 9 Sloan Court, London who he married in 1936 in Westminster, London.
Killed in Action on 18 January 1943 and buried in Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia.
Also named on the Makerstoun Parish War Memorial, on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on an individual memorial in Lauder Parish Church and on the Stowe School War Memorial.


JAMES MERCER, FLT/SGT. R.A.F.
James Mercer – age 20 – Sergeant (1824990) 624 (Special Duties) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
The squadron was formed at Blida, Algeria in September 1943. It was tasked by a Special Operations Executive unit to drop supplies and agents to the resistance in the South of France, Italy, and Yugoslavia. James was an air gunner in his Halifax bomber when it crashed south of Lyon.
Born 1924 in Legerwood, Berwickshire. Son of Robert Fowler Mercer and Agnes (Kerr or Weir) Mercer of Whitslaid, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 26 June 1944 and buried in Lamastre Protestant Cemetery, Ardeche, France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

IAN MONRO, PTE. CAMERONIANS
Ian Robert Monro – age 20 – Rifleman (3065703) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Ian enlisted in the Royal Scots in 1941 and was posted to the Cameronians. The 9th Battalion landed at Normandy in late June 1944 and Ian was fatally wounded during the liberation of Eterville near Caen. He was re-interred at Cheux in November 1945.
Born 1923 in Lauder. Son of Robert Vallance Monro and Margaret (Lumsden) Monro of Lauder.
Died of Wounds on 11 July 1944 and buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux. France.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


HECTOR McDONALD, CHIEF PETTY OFFICER. R.N.
Hector McDonald – age 41 – Chief Petty Officer (D/J 77519) HMS Hecla, Royal Navy.
Hector had joined the navy as a boy in September 1917. He joined the “Hecla” in December 1940. The destroyer depot ship “Hecla” was operating in support of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-515 to the west of Gibraltar.
Born 1901 in Peebles. Son of the late William and Agnes (Calder) McDonald.
Husband of Annie Hope (Linton) McDonald of Charlescourt, Lauder who he married in 1922 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 12 November 1942 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Lauder West Church memorial.


GEORGE McDOUGAL, M.C. CAPT. ROYAL ENGINEERS
George Nisbet McDougal, Military Cross – age 23 – Captain (125156) 629 Field Regiment, Royal Engineers.
George was educated at Pyatshaw School in Lauder, at St. Mary's School in Melrose and at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh before entering the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in the summer of 1939. He was commissioned in March 1940 and promoted to Lieutenant in September 1914. As acting Captain, he was awarded a M.C. in recognition of gallant and distinguished services with the 8th Army in Libya in 1943 and he received his medal at Buckingham Palace a month before he was killed at La Breche during the D-Day landings at Normandy.
Born 1921 in Lauder. Son of Arthur Robert and Helen Maud (Logan) McDougal of Blyth, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 6 June 1944 and buried in Hermanville War Cemetery, France
Also named on a memorial cairn at Peat Law, Blyth, Lauder, on the Lauder Parish Church memorial, on an individual memorial in Lauder Parish Church, and on the St. Mary's School and Merchiston Castle School memorials.

GEORGE B. REDPATH, L/CPL. ROYAL SCOTS

George Bruce Redpath – age 22 – Lance Corporal (3054846) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots
George was brought up in Lauderdale and served his apprenticeship as a baker in Lauder before he joined the Army in November 1935. He was killed in the village of Irtah near Tulkarm in Palestine during a clash with an Arab Rebel band.
Born 1916 in Lauder. Son of James Redpath and Margaret (Davidson) Redpath of 22 Upper Vennel, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 9 November 1938. (Burial place not known)
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

THOMAS REDPATH, L/CPL. ROYAL SCOTS

Thomas Redpath – age 28 – Lance Corporal (3054471) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
The 2nd Royal Scots had been in Hong Kong since 1938 but were all killed or captured when the Japanese attacked in December 1941.
Born 1913 in Lauder. Son of James Redpath and Margaret (Davidson) Redpath of 22 Upper Vennel, Lauder. Husband of K. Y. Redpath of Hong Kong.
Missing in Action on 23 December 1941 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


LESLIE ROSS, PIPER. K.O.S.B.
Leslie Ewing Ross – age 23 – Piper (3189150) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Leslie and his family came to Burnside, Lauder in 1937 and he was a member of the Territorial KOSB. He was an expert piper and joined the KOSB Band when he enlisted. Leslie landed with his battalion at Ostend in October 1944 and took part in the assault landings on Walcheren Island, at the mouth of the Scheldt. They then fought through into Germany.
Born 1921 at St Mary's Loch in Megget, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Catherine (Ewing) Ross (died 1944) and of David Ross of Newbigging Walls, Lauder and of Eccles, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 7 January 1945 and buried in Brunssum War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.


ROBERT WATSON, PILOT OFFICER. R.A.F.
Robert Watson – age 22 – Pilot Officer (48277) 50 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
“Bert” was educated in Lauder and at Galashiels Academy. He joined the RAF in November 1938 and was commissioned from Sergeant (628105) on 17 December 1941. His Hampden bomber had taken off from RAF Wick to support a commando raid on the Norwegian islands of Vaagso and Maaloy, codenamed Operation Archery. It was the first time air support was integrated into the raiding plans from the outset. However the aircraft was shot down and crashed off the Norwegian coast. Robert's body was picked up by a naval vessel and he was buried at sea.
Born 1919 in Lauder. Son of Duncan Turner Watson and Kate Gibb (Macdonald) Watson of Doiran, 42 West High Street, Lauder.
Killed in Action on 27 December 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Lauder Parish Church memorial and on the Galashiels Academy memorial.
