UKNIWM 44085.

Memorial is in Annan Old Parish Church OS Map Ref: NY 196 666

The memorial is very dark and difficult to photograph.

There is also an unlisted Roll of Honour in the church which I have photographed but have yet to post.

With one exception all of the names are also on the Annan War Memorial.
David Jardine is named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial.


JAMES ANDERSON.
James Anderson – age 19 – Private (23674) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James worked at Provost Mills in Annan. He was posted initially to the 7th/8th KOSB in France.
Born 1897 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Jane Little (Blackstock) Anderson of Galaberry and of 3 Moat Road, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 22 October 1916 and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


SAMUEL J. ANDERSON.
Samuel Johnstone Anderson – age 22 – Lance Corporal (11767) 6th Border Regiment.
Samuel had served his apprenticeship as a moulder at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in August 1914. He had previously served for two years in the Territorial 5th KOSB. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915 but contracted dysentery and was evacuated to hospital in Malta where he died.
Born 1893 in Annan. Son of John and Jane (Johnstone) Anderson of 10 North Street, Annan.
Died on Active Service on 13 September 1915 and buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


JAMES S. G. BELL.
I cannot trace this man.


JOSEPH M. BELL.
Joseph Mitchell Bell – age 18 – Private (51553) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Joseph was a fitter at the gasworks in Annan when he enlisted as Private (47855) in the 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers in April 1917. He was mobilised in August and posted to the 12th Royal Scots in France on 1 April 1918 but he was killed less than two weeks later.
Born 1899 in Annan. Son of the late William Bell and of Jane (Mitchell) Bell of 21 Murray Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

JAMES BURTON.
James Burton, Military Medal – age 20 – Private (28509) 1st Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)
James was working at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted as Private (M/317871) in the Army Service Corps. He was posted to the 8th Royal West Kents but was transferred to the 1st Battalion where he was awarded a MM as 28509 Pte. Burton, J., 1st Bn. (Newbie)
Born 1898 in Newbie, Annan as James Burton Rae. Son of Joseph Elliot Burton and of Mary Jane (Rae) Burton of 8 Three Trees Road, Newbie and of 1 Hope Place, Terregles Street, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire who married in 1898 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 September 1918 and buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


DAVID W. CAMPBELL
David Wilson Campbell – age 32 – Private (S/10578) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
David was a native of Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire and worked as a cycle and motor mechanic. He enlisted in June 1916 and had been in France for five weeks when he was killed by a grenade.
Born 1888 in Newton Stewart, Penninghame. Son of William and Mary (Harvey) Campbell. Husband of Georgina (Thomson) Campbell of 23 Butts Street, Annan who he married in 1914 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JAMES S. CARRUTHERS
James Carruthers – age 28 – Sergeant (40145) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a member of the Territorials and served with the 2/5th Battalion, KOSB until he was posted to France in early 1916.
Born 1888 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William John Carruthers and Catherine (Holt) Carruthers of Swordwell Cottage, Annan.
He named his sister Jeannie as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

JOHN COLLINS
John Collins – age 22 – Able Seaman (Clyde Z/5305) Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
John had been an apprentice boiler-maker at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915. After service in Egypt the battalion move to France in May 1916 but John contracted a fever (pyrexia) and was evacuated home in November 1916. He rejoined his battalion in France in May 1917 but was fatally wounded and died two days later in the 46th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1895 in Annan. Son of Martin and Margaret (Smith) Collins of Northfield Lodge and of Blackhills, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 28 October 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


MATTHEW CORMIE
Matthew Cormie – age 19 – Private (1883) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Matt was an apprentice engineer at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed at the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Annan. Son of William and Marion (Lockhart) Cormie of 3 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

James Hume Duncan – age 27 – Private (S/18498) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a farm servant when he enlisted in Carlisle in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France in June 1916.
Born 1890 in Dalton, Dumfrieshire as John Hume. Son of Arthur William Duncan and Isabella Callum (Hume) Duncan of 12 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan who had married in 1890 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action between 23 and 27 April 1917 and buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France.

Thought to be:
Robert John Green – age 19 – Private (13088) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months late during the battle of Loos.
Born 1896 in Dalbeattie as Robert John Green. Son of Joan Green of William Street, Dalbeattie and of Robert Halliday of Craigmath, Dalbeattie.
In 1901, as John Green, he was living with his uncle and aunt, Thomas and Margaret Thomson of North Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


WILLIAM HENDERSON
William Henderson – age 20 – Lance Corporal (40488) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
William was educated at Gretna school and Annan Academy before he joined the Commercial Bank of Scotland in Annan. He enlisted in the 9th Royal Scots in January 1916 but was posted to the KOSB.
Born 1896 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Barbara Jane (McTaggart) Henderson of Rose Cottage, Stapleton Road, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 18 August 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Commercial Bank of Scotland memorial in the RBS branch in St. Andrew's Square, Edinburgh.


WILLIAM B. HINSELWOOD

William Byres Hinselwood – age 19 – Private (202149) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William enlisted as Private (3713) in the Royal Scots and as Private (376004) joined the 16th Battalion in France before he was transferred to the KOSB.
Born 1898 in Ecclefechan, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Margaret (Byers) Hinselwood and of John Hinselwood of 24 George Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 19 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

DAVID HOPPER
David Hopper – age 23 – Private (33659) 1/8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
David was a propagator to trade. His enlistment had been exempted until June 1917 as he was the sole support to his mother and grandmother.
Born 1894 in Annan. Son of Phyllis Hopper of 23 North Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 2 November 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

William Irving – age 42 – Lance Corporal (63466) 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. [23/9/1915]
William Irving – age 26 – Lance Corporal (S/3619) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. [18/7/1916]


JOHN JAMIESON
John Jamieson – age 29 – Second Lieutenant, 9th Battalion, attached to the 19th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
John was a member of the Territorials in Annan where he was a Sergeant and had worked for his uncle at Jamieson Brothers, seedsmen in Annan, for fourteen years, travelling through the south west of Scotland, Cumberland and the Midlands. He was commissioned in August 1917.
Born 1887 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire. Son of the late Thomas Jamieson of Old Halls, Dunragit, Wigtownshire and of Margaret Jane (McBratney) Jamieson of Violetbank Farm, Annan.
Killed in Action on 3 April 1918 and buried in Quesnoy Farm Military Cemetery, France

DAVID JARDINE
David Jardine – age 31 – Lance Corporal (A/40512) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
David served his apprenticeship in Islesteps, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire before he emigrated to Canada. He was working as a carpenter and was a member of the local militia, the 52nd Regiment (Prince Albert Volunteers) when he enlisted at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in December 1914. He sailed from Canada in June 1915 and was posted to his battalion in France in August 1915. David was reported wounded and missing near Courcelette.
Born 1885 Ewes, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Georgina Graham (Baird) Jardine of Davington, Eskdalemuir and of Robert Jardine of 24 Butts Street, Annan, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial.


JOHN JOHNSTONE
John Johnstone – age 38 – Private (18827) 8th Battalion, Border Regiment.
John was living in Wigton, Cumberland when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915.
Born 1878 in Annan. Son of the late Samuel Johnstone and of Mary (Murphy) Johnstone of 5 Thomas Street, Annan. Husband of Maggie Johnstone of Wigton, Cumberland.
Missing in Action on 15 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

William was a labourer aged 19 when he enlisted in the KOSB in December 1899. He was posted to the 1st KOSB in April 1900 and joined the 2nd KOSB in March 1904. He served in South Africa, India , Burma and Aden before he was transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1907. William was mobilised and landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914 but was killed eleven days later.
Born 1880 in Annan. Son of the late Samuel Johnstone and of Mary (Murphy) Johnstone of 5 Thomas Street, Annan.
He named his mother Mary, his brother James of 11 Rose Street, Annan, and his sister-in-law Maggie, wife of John, as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 26 August 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.

PATRICK J. B. KEILLER
Patrick James Blackley Keiller – age 27 – Private (37145) 36th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
In 1911 Patrick was a stationers assistant living at 85 Fernley Road, Sparkhill, Birmingham and he enlisted from there. He landed with his unit as part of the 13th Division in France in May 1915.
Born 1891 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of William James Keiller and of Agnes (Blackley) Keiller of Port Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 28 March 1918 and buried in Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


AGNEW D. LATIMER
Agnew Dickson Latimer – age 21 – Private (203296) 5th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Agnew was educated at the Annan Academy and was working in the shop and offices of a bookseller and publisher in Annan when he enlisted as Private (2175) in the 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry in August 1914. He landed with his unit as dismounted troops at Gallipoli in October 1915 but he contracted enteric fever and was evacuated to hospital where he was operated on for appendicitis. He was evacuated home and then posted as Private (3649) to the 1/5th Scottish Rifles in France in November 1916.
Born 1895 in Annan. Son of Robert Rome Latimer and Agnes (Dickson) Latimer of 22 Carlyle Place, Annan.
Killed in Action on 14 April 1917 and buried in Heninel-Croisilles Road Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


JAMES A. LEITCH
James Andrew Leitch – age 37 – Private (24045) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was educated at Annan Academy and was a grocer in Annan when he enlisted as Private (23147) in the KOSB in March 1916. He was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June but a few weeks later he was wounded and treated at the 1st South African General Hospital in Abbeville before being evacuated to the 3rd Western General Hospital at Newport, South Wales in July 1916. He returned to France and joined the 1st RSF in November 1916 but was evacuated again due to illness to the Red Cross Hospital at Cardonald, Glasgow in December. He rejoined his battalion in June 1917 but was killed three months later.
Born 1880 in Annan. Son of the late Andrew and Jane (French) Leitch of 5 Shankland Court, Annan and of 97 & 99 High Street, Annan. Brother of Alexander Leitch of West View, North Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.

EDWARD S. LINTON
Edward Smith Linton – age 21 – Sergeant (26059) 18th Training Depot Station, Royal Air Force.
Edward was educated at Annan Academy. He enlisted as Private (1292) in the 1/5th KOSB and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He contracted enteric fever and was treated on the hospital ship “Seang Bee” in July before being evacuated home. He left Annan again in December 1915 and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in June 1916. He was Mentioned in Despatches by the Commander-in-Chief of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty. He was killed in a flying accident in Egypt.
Born 1897 in Annan. Son of the late Joseph Linton and of Mary (Gass) Linton of Murrayfield Cottages, Annan.
Died on Service on 4 February 1919 and buried in Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.

MATTHEW G. LINTON

Matthew Gass Linton – age 23 – Private (9187) 14th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Matthew was a clerk with the Caledonian Railway Company and was living at 144 Buccleuch Street in Glasgow when he enlisted there. He was in a squad repairing the parapet of their trench when they were hit by a shell. Four men were killed.
Born 1892 in Annan. Son of the late Joseph Linton and of Mary (Gass) Linton of Murrayfield Cottages, Annan.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1916 and buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Caledonian Railway Company memorial in Glasgow Central Station and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


ADAM H. LISTER
Adam Harkness Lister, Military Medal – age 32 – Fitter Staff Sergeant (138893) 251st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Adam served in the Witwatersrand Rifles (known as the "Wits Rifles") as part of the South African Defence Force during the invasion of German South West Africa (Namibia) in 1915. At the end of the campaign troops were allowed to volunteer for overseas service and Adam landed at Plymouth on 2 September 1915. He married a week later and on 5 October he enlisted as Private (M2/13001) in the Army Service Corps Motor Transport in Glasgow. He was posted to the 18th Anti Aircraft Battery in France in November 1915 and promoted to Corporal in June 1916. He was transferred to the RGA in November 1916 and was promoted and posted to the 251st Siege Battery in September 1917. He was awarded a M.M. as 138893 Fitt. S./Sjt. A. H. Lister, R.G.A. (Motherwell) in August 1918. Adam was wounded in October 1918 and died five days later in the 30th Casualty Clearing Station at Ficheux.
Born 1886 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Isabella (Harkness) Lister of Beechgrove and of St. Bees Cottage, Annan. Husband of Charlotte Edwards (Robertson) Lister of Airbles Street, Motherwell and of St. Bees Cottage, Annan who he married in 1915 in Kelvin, Glasgow.
Died of Wounds on 8 October 1918 and buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


D. GRAHAM MACDOUGALL
David Graham Mather Macdougall – age 25 – Lieutenant, 5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion,
King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 1/3rd King's African Rifles.
David was educated in Kelso and at the Annan Academy before serving his apprenticeship in the Annan Branch of the Bank Of Scotland. He obtained a position in the Royal Bank of Canada in 1912 but he returned to join the Weensland Spinning Company of Hawick in 1914 and was commissioned in the KOSB in December 1915. David was promoted to Lieutenant with the KAR in April 1917 but was killed at Ngangachie in East Africa.
Born 1891 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander and Helen (Beattie) Macdougall of 10 Bank Street, Annan. Brother of Miss Dorothy Helen Hope Macdougall of Bank of Scotland House, 10 Bank Street Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1917 and buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

ALEXANDER C. McANDREW
Alexander Campbell McAndrew – age 28 – Second Engineer, S.S. Karonga (North Shields) Mercantile Marine.
Alexander was educated at Annan Academy before he went to sea.
The “Karonga” was sailing from Newport to Bombay via the Mediterranean when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U63 in the Strait of Messina.
Born c.1888 in Glasgow (CWGC) or in Cathcart Renfrewshire (1901 census) but I cannot trace. Probably born as Alexander McDonald.
Son of Margaret McDonald of Solway View, Creca Hall, Annan who married the late William McAndrew of Creca Hall in Ardchattan, Argyll in 1896, and who married William Davidson in 1912 in Annan. (Margaret was born in Cathcart in 1864 and died in Annan in 1919)
Brother of Miss Elizabeth McAndrew of Creca Hall and of 8 Alexandria Place, Annan.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 28 April 1917 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


GEORGE McCULLOCH
George McCulloch – age 21 – Private (1058) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was an engineer with Baird & Sons in Annan and, as a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB, he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed at the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbright as David George McCulloch. Son of John and Agnes (McKill) McCulloch of Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


ROBERT McLEAN
Robert McLean – age 38 – Private (673) 2nd South African Rifles.
Robert was educated at Annan Academy and worked on his father's farms, latterly at Williamwood, Brydekirk near Annan, until he emigrated to South Africa. He was working as a storeman when he enlisted at Durban in November 1915. He was based at Zomba in Nyasaland (Malawi) when he was adjudged to be unfit for active service and he was returned to Durban in November 1916. Robert died of acute alcoholism in Johannesburg Hospital,
Born 1879 in Annan. Son of Robert Brown McLean and Isabella Margaret (McDowall) McLean of Brae House, Annan.
Died on Service on 4 January 1917 and buried in Johannesburg (Brixton) Cemetery, Gauteng, South Africa.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.

ROBERT McWHIRTER
Robert McWhirter – age 32 – Private (S/13661) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert was an ironmonger when he enlisted in September 1914. He had served his apprenticeship with J. L. Davidson in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire before working with T. Duff in Annan. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1883 in Bargrennan, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Helen (McTier) McWhirter. Son of John McWhirter and step-son of Janet McWhirter of Barlure, New Luce , Wigtownshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Bargrennan Parish War Memorial and on the New Luce Parish War Memorial.


JONATHAN G. MUIR
Jonathan Muir – age 26 – Private (S/23432) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Born 1893 in Rigg, Gretna, Dumfriesshire as Jonathan Muir Gordon.
Son of Georgina (Glendinning or Gordon) Muir and of George Muir of Closehead Farm, Annan who married in 1893 in Gretna.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


DANIEL NICHOLSON
Daniel Nicholson – age 35 – Private (23493) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Daniel was working as a carter on the Kinmount Estate at Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in April 1916. He had been with his battalion for just two weeks when he was killed.
Born 1881 in Annan. Son of the late David Nicholson and of Agnes (Irving) Nicholson of the Water Mill, Annan.
Killed in Action on 3 September 1916 and buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

WILLIAM POTTS
William Potts – age 27 – Lance Corporal (15772) 1st Battalion, Border Regiment.
William was in farm service when he enlisted in Longtown in September 1914 and he landed with the 8th Battalion at Boulogne in September 1915. He was wounded in July 1916 and after treatment in hospital in Etaples he was evacuated to England. When he recovered he returned to France and was posted to the 1st Battalion in February 1917. During a brief period of leave he married in January 1918 in Carlisle.
Born 1891 in Kirkandrews-on-Esk, Longtown, Cumberland. Son of James and Mary Potts of 6 Shanklands Court and of 24 Johnstone Street, Annan.
Husband of Edith (Graham) Potts of Hagg-on-Esk, Canonbie who he married in 1918 in Carlisle.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


CHRISTOPHER RICHARDSON
Christopher Richardson – age 19 – Private (23677) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Christopher had served his apprenticeship as a compositor and linotype operator at the “Observer” office in Annan and worked there until he was old enough to enlist. He was wounded and made a prisoner on 3 May 1917 but died a week later in the German military hospital at Cassel in Niederzwehren.
Born 1897 in Annan. Son of Christina Richardson of 34 Johnstone Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 10 May 1917 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Hessen, Germany.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


ROBERT G. SCAIFE
Robert George Scaife – age 21 – Lance Corporal (S/4878) 10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders attached to the 257th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.
Robert enlisted in February 1915 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1895 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Heron) Scaife of 4 Brewery Place, Annan.
Killed in Action on 28 May 1916 and buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loos, France
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

PETER SIMPSON
Peter Simpson – age 30 – Private (S/20777) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Peter was a foreman porter with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company and living in Barrhead, Renfrewshire when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in May 1917 and joined his battalion in France in August but was killed two months later.
Born in 1887 in Milton Bridge, Penicuik, Midlothian. Son of the late Peter Simpson and of Barbara (Stewart) Simpson (from 1903 Mrs. Robert Broatch Dixon) of 3 East Hecklegirth, Annan. Husband of Mary Jane (Lindsay) Simpson, of 3 Gladstone Avenue, Barrhead, Renfrewshire and of 15 Addison Place, Annan who he married in 1911 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Barrhead War Memorial and on the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company memorial now in Ayr Station.


ROBERT SKILLING
Robert Skilling – age 28 – Private (5973) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Robert was a blacksmith when he enlisted in the 2nd Dragoons in October 1904 for three years and was a reservist when he joined the police force at Hazel Grove near Stockport. He transferred to the Manchester City Police and in 1911, age 24, he was a Constable lodging at 8 Mora Street, Moston, North Manchester. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with the 2nd Scots Guards at Zeebrugge on 7 October 1914.
Born 1886 Buittle near Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Benjamin Hunter Skilling and of Janet Rae (Scott) Skilling of 56 High Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 28 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


ALEXANDER SMITH
Alexander Smith – age 32 – Private (15963) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was an engineer when he enlisted in October 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1883 in Annan. Son of Alexander Smith of Watchhill, Annan and of Helen or Ellen (Thomson) Smith, formerly Mrs William Conchie. Husband of Mary Jane (Kean) Smith of 26 Charles Street, Annan and of 39 Dunedin Road, Eastriggs who he married in 1911 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Robert enlisted as Private (4308) and joined his battalion at Gallipoli in November 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Annan. Son of Adam and Helen (Stevenson) Smith, of 1 Shanklands Court, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 24 April 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JOHN THOMSON
John Thomson – age 36 – Rifleman (593240) 2/18th Battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles)
Jack was educated at Annan Academy and was living in Paddington in London when he enlisted as Private (5991) in July 1916. He joined his battalion in France in October 1916 but in November the battalion moved to Salonica, landing there in December 1916. In June 1917 they move again, this time to Egypt and then into Palestine where they served at Gaza and Jerusalem. Jack die of multiple gunshot wounds in the 31st General Hospital at Port Said in Egypt.
Born 1881 in Annan. Son of George and Charlesina Lily (Stainthorpe) Thomson of Cove Villa, Hecklegirth, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 30 November 1917 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


JAMES THORBURN
James Thorburn – age 21 – Private (14719) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
James landed with the 11th Battalion of the Cameronians at Boulogne in September 1915 and later served with the 10th and 9th Battalions.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of James and Mary (Beattie) Thorburn of Lochfield House and of Howgill Bank, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 5 April 1918 and buried in Namps-Au-Val British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

GEORGE TRODDEN
George Trodden – age 28 – Lance Corporal (17300) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George served his apprenticeship as a machineman at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan before taking employment in Lenzie near Glasgow. He enlisted in Kirkintilloch in December 1914 and joined his battalion in France in April 1915. He was wounded on three occasions.
Born 1889 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JAMES TRODDEN
James Trodden – age 28 – Private (16880) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an engine driver at Corsehill Quarry, Annan when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined his battalion in France in April 1915 but was killed two weeks later during the battle for Hill 60 at Ypres.
Born 1886 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 6 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


ROBERT TRODDEN
Robert Trodden – age 37 – Private (16275) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a stone mason at Barjarg Tower, Keir, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in October 1914. He was drowned when the Troopship “Royal Edward” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-14 in the Aegean.
Born 1879 in Annan.
Husband of Elizabeth (Lizzie McDonald) Trodden, of 113 St. Michael Street, Dumfries who he married in 1903 in Dumfries.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 13 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.
