CHRISTOPHER G. CARRUTHERS.
Christopher George Carruthers – age 27 – Sergeant (135445) 4th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Christopher was a street car conductor when he enlisted in Toronto in July 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in March 1916 and joined his battalion in France in September. He was promoted to Sergeant in December 1916. Christopher was killed at Vimy Ridge and was buried there. He was re-interred at La Chaudiere in August 1919.
Born 1890 in Whitley, Tynemouth, Northumberland. Son of George and Elizabeth (Scott) Carruthers who had married in 1888 in Dornock. In 1891 they were at Monkseaton in Northumberland but by 1901 they were at Hay's Place in Annan. Husband of Nellie or Isabella Telfer (Richardson) Carruthers of 235 Poplar Plains Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada who he married in 1912 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in La Chaudiere Military Cemetery, Vimy, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

RICHARD CARRUTHERS.
Richard Ernest Scott Carruthers – age 21 – Private (1456) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was an apprentice boilermaker at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan. As a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. Robert contracted enteric fever and died in hospital on Mudros.
Born 1894 in Gosforth, Castle Ward, Northumberland. Son of George and Elizabeth (Scott) Carruthers who had married in 1888 in Dornock. In 1891 they were at Monkseaton in Northumberland but by 1901 they were at Hay's Place in Annan.
Died on Active Service on 4 August 1915 and buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


WILLIAM STUART HUGHES.
William Stuart Hughes – age 46 – Company Quartermaster Sergeant (1786) 5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Annan Academy, was a plumber in Annan and had served with the Territorial 5th KOSB when he enlisted in August 1914. He was posted as Colour Sergeant to the 12th Scottish Provisional Battalion in May 1915 but was discharged from the army as physically unfit for further service on 24 March 1916 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (45773) William died at his home a year later.
Born 1870 in Annan. Son of the late Edward Henry Stuart Hughes and Mary (Lawson) Hughes. Husband of Annie (Shennan) Hughes of 32 Ednam Street, Annan who he married in 1896 in Annan.
Died on 28 March 1917 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)

JOHN PETER HYSLOP.
John Peter Hyslop – age 27 – Private (41112) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was educated at Annan Academy and in 1911 John and his brother Herries were working in the drapery trade in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but by 1916, with Herries and another brother, Maxwell, already in the army, John was assisting his father as a farmer and livestock dealer in Annan. He enlisted as Private (1618) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in May 1916 and was posted initially to the 10th Scottish Rifles. John was killed in the last week of the war.
Born 1891 at Tregallon, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Peter and Janet (Herries) Hyslop of Hillside, Annan.
Killed in Action on 7 November 1918 and buried in Ecuelin Churchyard, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.
His brothers were Herries Hyslop, Bombardier (63684) Royal Garrison Artillery and Lieutenant Maxwell Hyslop.


DOUGLAS JOHNSTON JARDINE.
Douglas Johnston Jardine – age 25 – Private (202025) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Douglas was educated at Annan Academy and was an apprentice plumber in Annan when he enlisted as Private (709) in the Territorial 5th KOSB in April 1910. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he contracted diphtheria in November and was evacuated to the 17th General Hospital in Alexandria. He was still in Egypt when his time expired and he was discharged from the army in April 1916. At some point he re-enlisted and was posted to the Gordons in France.
Born 1893 at Croftheads, Annan. Son of Bailie Joseph Jardine and of Mary Jane (Bound) Jardine of Ednam Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 4 May 1918 and buried in Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.

ROBERT JOHNSTON JARDINE.
Robert Johnston Jardine – age 22 – Corporal (384) 5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was educated at Annan Academy and has just completed his apprenticeship as a joiner in Annan when, as a member of the Territorials, he was mobilised in August 1914. The battalion were in training at Bannockburn, St Ninians, Stirlingshire when Robert died of heart failure.
Born 1890 at Croftheads, Annan. Son of Bailie Joseph Jardine and of Mary Jane (Bound) Jardine of Ednam Street, Annan.
Died on Service on 17 August 1914 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)

ALEXANDER JOHNSTONE.
Alexander Johnstone – age 22 – Lance Corporal (122) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
As a member of the Territorials, Alexander was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was killed during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah and his effects were sent home by his father Sergeant William Johnston also of the 1/5th KOSB.
Born 1893 in Annan. Son of William (a postman) and Elizabeth (McMahon) Johnstone (b. India) of 10 George Street, Annan They had married in 1892 in Plymouth. On the 1901 census William is absent (possibly with the KOSB in South Africa) and Elizabeth is a “Soldier's Wife”
Missing in Action on 13 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


GEORGE LOCKHART.
George Lockhart – age 25 – Private (300) 49th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
George had served his apprenticeship as a butcher in Annan before he emigrated to Australia in about 1910. He was living at Helen Street, Fortitude Valley, Queensland when he enlisted at Enoggera Barracks in August 1914 and he sailed with the 9th Battalion from Brisbane in September 1914. He took part in the landings at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 where he was wounded. He was evacuated back to Egypt due to illness in August but returned to his unit in October. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli he was transferred to 49th Battalion in Egypt in February 1916 and landed at Marseilles on 12 June but he was wounded two months later at Pozieres and died six days later in the 1st Canadian General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1891 in Annan. Son of Robert and Jane (Dickson) Lockhart of 6 Nicholsons Place, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 19 August 1916 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


DAVID LOUDEN.
David Little Loudon – age 35 – Lance Corporal (117359) 2nd Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
David was educated at Annan Academy and was a carpenter when he enlisted in Calgary, Alberta in January 1915. He sailed from Canada in October and he landed in France in January 1916. He was wounded at Ypres and evacuated to the 3rd London General Hospital in Wandsworth, London in May 1916. He rejoined his unit in France and was promoted to Lance Corporal in April 1917. David was killed near Passchendaele.
Born 1881 in Annan. Son of the late David Cunningham Loudon and of Agnes Rogerson (Little) Loudon of 25 Port Street, Annan. Brother of Miss Jeanie Little Loudon of 25 Port Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 31 October 1917 and buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


THOMAS ALLEN MOSS.
Thomas Allan Moss – age 35 – Private (2279) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a stone mason and a member of the Annan Town Band when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed at the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1880 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William and Margaret (Ross) Moss of Annan. He lived with his sister Margaret at Summergate, Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the St. John the Evangelist Church memorial.


GEORGE HOPE MUNDELL.
George Hope Mundell – age 25 – Private (7628) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was educated at Annan Academy. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos. George's body was recovered from the battlefield and re-interred at Loos in February 1920.
Born 1889 in Annan. Son of the late James Mundell and of Alice (Hope) Mundell of 6 Cumberland Terrace, Annan.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Loos British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


ALEXANDER McKECHAN.
Alexander McKechan – age – Driver (93045) 26th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Alexander was living in Johnstone, Renfrewshire and was a compositor with a local newspaper when he enlisted. He landed in France in November 1915. Alexander died in the 20th Casualty Clearing Station at Bohain.
Born 1894 Ardrossan, Ayrshire. Son of John (Station Master at Annan) and Euphemia (Crawford) McKechan.
Died of Wounds on 5 November 1918 and buried in Premont British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


ROBERT McKENZIE.
Robert MacKenzie – age 59 – Pipe-Major (14851) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had served in the army for many years and had been awarded Long Service and Good Conduct Medals. He became the caretaker of the drill-hall in Dumfries until 1897 and for the next 18 years he was the attendance officer of Annan School Board. In spite of his age he volunteered and was accepted for service and he landed with the 6th KOSB at Boulogne in May 1915. Robert was wounded during the battle of Loos on 25th September and died in the 25th General Hospital at Dannes-Camiers. He was Mentioned in Despatches.
Born 1856 in Duthil, Inverness-shire/Elginshire. Son of the late Robert and Mary (Murchison) MacKenzie. Husband of Jane (Dargie) Mackenzie of Ednam Street, Annan and of 40 Cliff Street, Yonkers, New York, U.S.A. who he married in 1879 in St. Andrew, Edinburgh.
His daughter Elizabeth was born c.1882 in Ireland, his sons - Robert was born c.1885 in Ireland, George was born c.1887 in England, Ronald c.1892 in India, and his daughter Margaret was born in 1897 in Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 8 October 1915 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Annan Academy memorial and on an individual memorial now in the Devil's Porridge Museum in Eastriggs near Annan.


JOHN NICHOLSON.
John Nicholson – age 21 – Private (S/23204) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Jack was educated at Annan Academy and he had returned from America to enlist in June 1916. He went to France in August and had just received an order to attend a Cadet school with view to him being commissioned when he was killed.
Born 1895 in Annan. Son of John and Eleanor Elizabeth (Matts) Nicholson of Scaurbank, Annan.
Missing in Action on 18 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Academy memorial.


ALEXANDER PEATTIE.
Alexander Peattie – age 26 – Private (18386) Canadian Divisional Cyclist Company.
Alexander had served with the Territorial 5th KOSB before he emigrated to Canada in 1911. He was working as a painter and decorator, and was a member of the local militia the Edmonton Fusiliers, when he enlisted in Edmonton in August 1914. He re-enlisted in the 9th Battalion at Valcartier Camp in September and sailed from Quebec in October. He landed in France on 17 October and was transferred to the Cyclist Company in January 1915. Alexander suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died in 18th Field Ambulance.
Born 1888 in Wandsworth, London as Paul Alexander Peattie. Son of Paul and Mary (Thompson) Peattie 20 Ednam Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 24 February 1915 and buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial as A.P. Peattie and on the St. John the Evangelist Church memorial as P. Alexander Peattie.

GEORGE PEATTIE.
George Reid Peattie – age 23 – Private (18382) 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade.
George was employed as a clerk in the Provost Oat Mills in Annan before he emigrated. He was working as a painter when he enlisted in the local militia the Edmonton Fusiliers in August 1914. He re-enlisted in the 9th Battalion at Valcartier Camp in September and sailed from Quebec in October. He landed in France on 17 October and was posted to the 3rd Battalion in March 1915. He transferred to the 1st Brigade to remain as groom to his officer in January 1917. George died of multiple wounds in the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station at Boisleux-au-Mont near Ficheux.
Born 1894 in Kirkcaldy, Fife. Son of Paul and Mary (Thompson) Peattie 20 Ednam Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 28 September 1918 and buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JOSEPH ROSS.
Joseph Ross – age 25 – Private (S/6430) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Joseph served his apprenticeship as a plumber in Annan and was working for an aerated water manufacturer when he enlisted in October 1914. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 but was killed by a sniper two months later.
Born 1890 in Annan. Son of Andrew and Helen (Hall) Ross of Annan. Husband of Janet (Halliday) Ross who he married in 1911 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 13 December 1915 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


CHARLES SCOTT.
Charles Robertson Scott – age 38 – Private (30928) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles had managed a grocers in Kelso and was the manager of a licensed grocers in Annan until he was appointed to the Central Liquor Control Board in Annan.
Born 1879 in Otterburn, Bellingham, Northumberland. Son of the late Alexander and Agnes (Beattie) Scott of Keilder Head, Northumberland. Husband of Jeanie G. (Steel) Scott of Park Terrace, Annan and of 13 The Square, Kelso who he married in 1913 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 3 December 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


HENRY JAMES SCOTT.
Henry James Scott – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Henry was educated at Annan Academy, at Stanley House School, in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire and at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh before he joined the Scottish Insurance Corporation, Ltd. in Edinburgh, and was appointed their inspector of agencies for West Cumberland and Dumfriesshire. He played for Annan C.C. and Carlisle F.C. before he left for Canada and took up farming with three Watsonian School friends. On the outbreak of war he returned to this country and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the 2/4th Cameron Highlanders in December 1914. Early in 1915 he was drafted to the first line in France and was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1915. He served at Festubert, Givenchy and at Loos where he was fatally wounded. Henry died in the 2nd Red Cross Hospital in Rouen but his body was brought home and he was buried in Annan.
Born 1889 in Annan. Son of Alexander and Agnes (Gillies) Scott of 24 St. John's Road, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 29 September 1915 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)

ROBERT HARKESS THOMSON.
Robert Harkess Thomson – age 21 – Private (41855) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was a grocer in Annan when he enlisted as Private (2555) in the 2/5th King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted as Private (29699) to the KOSB in France but was transferred to the HLI.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of Walter and Margaret (Harkess) Thomson of The Lodge, Annan Combination Hospital.
Missing in Action on 24 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.
