I have posted photos of this before (by accident when I was posting the Cornets Club memorial) but I thought that it deserved its own entry so I went back with a brush and some water to make the inscription readable and took some fresh photos.

There is a plaque (inscription below) and behind it an inscribed flagpole base (inscription below). The stone behind the flagpole base is the Cornets Club memorial.

All are in Castledykes Park, Dumfries at OS Map Ref: NT 260 020.

Not listed on UKNIWM.

transcription of plaque:
SITE OF ROYAL CASTLE
OF DUMFRIES
BUILT IN 1186 BY WILLIAM
THE LION
IN THE WARS OF SCOTTISH
INDEPENDANCE IT WAS RE-
TAKEN FROM THE ENGLISH
BY WALLACE IN 1297 AND
BY BRUCE IN 1306.
THE CASTLE WAS
RECORDED AS
WASTE IN 1335

transcription of flagpole base:
KING ROBERT THE BRUCE
ON 10TH FEBRUARY 1306
CAPTURED THE CASTLE OF DUMFRIES
WHICH OCCUPIED THIS SITE AND SO BEGAN THE WAR WHICH VINDICATED
SCOTLAND'S INDEPENDANCE
THIS MEMORIAL STONE
LAID ON 10TH FEBRUARY 1906 BY WILLIAM MURRAY ESQUIRE RCM OF DUMFRIES

That was a flagpole, no longer in use.

The flagpole (and flag) were replaced in 2009, there is a new plaque on the top face to that effect.
