About ten years ago myself and dad knocked on a door asking about the memorial.
The chap with whom we had a pleasant chat informed us that materials from the Hamilton Palace of the Dukes of Hamilton were used. |

Corporal Henry Kelly (1485), of the Seaforth Highlanders.
The deceased soldier, who was 21 years of age, was a native of Auchentibber. He enlisted at the outbreak of war, going to France about 2 years ago. Corporal Kelly was at the Battle of Loos, and was wounded in June 1916. He was an Officer's servant, and his officer writing of him says - "It is with great regret and sorrow I write to tell you of your son. Since I joined the Battalion I have been fortunate in having him for my servant, and a better boy or a finer soldier, would be hard to find. He was killed by shell fire about noon on 13th April, and was buried with his comrades near the scene of action. |

Browsing through the very interesting Blantyre Project website I came across a series of Blogs that tell of the complete demolition and rebuilding of this war memorial in 2018. Apparently the effects of weathering had been so bad that complete demolition was the only alternative. |
