Way back at the start of this thread Adam gave an either/or for H Paton. The Wigtownshire Free Press (22/3/1917) may throw some illumination on this one. "Mrs Paton, High Three Mark, Stoneykirk, has been informed that her son, Private Henry Paton, Scots Guards, was killed in action on 4th inst. Before joining the Army on 15th February 1915, Private Paton, who was 21 years of age, was in the employment of Mr McDowall, High Three Mark." The article also carries a photograph of Pte Paton.

A little more on Pte Robert Holmes and his father, QMS A Holmes from the 23/8/1917 edition of the Wigtownshire Free Press: Mrs McGeoch, 25 St Andrew St, Stranraer, has received official notice that her nephew, Pte Robert Holmes, RSF, was killed in action in France on 31 July. Pte Holmes enlisted in April 1915 and had been on active service since December last. Prior to enlisting he was emplyed by Mr McMurry, Eldrick, Portlogan. The following letter has been received from his Cmdg Officer: "It is with deepest regret I have to inform you that your nephew, Pte R Holmes, was killed in action on July 31. He was in the attack on that day, and was shot through the head by a bullet from a German machine gun, death immediately ensuing. He did his bit nobly, and has made the supreme sacrifice for his country's sake. He was a splendid fellow, always willing and eager in his work, and I know the officer to whom he acted as orderly thought highly of him. This officer was wounded by the same bullet. I know no words of mine can heal this wound to you, but I wish to assure you of my heartfelt sympathy in your sad loss." Pte Holmes' father died about two years ago, of fever, while on service with the Dardanelles Expeditionery Force.

Both men are also named on Ardwell Church Memorial.

A little more on Crawford and Samuel Todd from the Wigtownshire Free Press (20/9/1917): Gunner Crawford Todd, Cape Garrison Artillery, son of Mr S Todd, Auchentibbert, was killed in action in France on August 9. As reported in last week's issue, another son of Mr Todd's (Samuel), who was attached to the same battery, succumbed to wounds at the same time. Both brothers joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915, and experienced fully 19 months' active service. Mr Todd has four sons in the Army, all of whom have been in the fighting line. James was wounded in May last, and is at present in England, but expects to be in France again very soon.
