This memorial is in a bit of a sorry state. It's unusual to see a community memorial so neglected. Sad

I agree. In mitigation, there are not that many folk in Kellas these days - but, in my opinion, a bit of elbow grease would do the world of good.

Kellas
UKNIWM Ref no: 8716

The Kellas war memorial is a freestone cross set on an octagonal pedestal. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed in black painted lettering around the faces of the pedestal.
The memorial was unveiled on the afternoon of Sunday 2nd May 1920.
The ceremony was reported by the Northern Scot, 7th May 1920 and pointed to the sacrifice made by such a small community of 30 houses in losing the ten men who were listed on the monument. The monument was gifted to the community by Mr. T.N. Christie, proprietor of the estate. The chosen site is known locally as the 'Chapel Hillock' and was believed to be an ancient burial ground. In his speech Mr. Chrisite noted that 'The records show that four MacKays from Bunach, three Denoons from Easter Kellas, three Roys from Bodnamuir, two Allans from Bodnamuir, two Grants from Bauds, two Morgans from Kellas, and two Milnes from Bodnastalker served.' The memorial was then unveiled by Mrs. Christie. The paper reported that Mr. Christie also presented a 'beautifully illuminated school roll of honour. It is enclosed in a handsome oak frame'.
The monument stands on a raised mound at the east end of the village.
