William George Geddes – age 26 – Private (18329) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was an hotel porter living with his family at 25 Melbourne Place, North Berwick when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with his battalion in France in July 1915 but he was killed six weeks later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Braemar, Aberdeenshire. Son of the late Peter Stevenson Geddes (died 1892) and of Lavinia (Smith) Geddes; later Mrs. Thomson of Chicago. Husband of Agnes (Taylor) Geddes of 28 Upper Bridge Street, Stirling who he married in 1910 in Rattray, Perthshire.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick and on the Braemar War Memorial.


R. GILBERT. TR
Robert Gilbert – age 35 – Private (13161) 4th Regiment, South African Infantry.
Robert served his apprenticeship in Edinburgh and was a draper when he enlisted in March 1917. He sailed from Cape Town in April.
Born 1882 in Edinburgh. Son of James and Agnes (Cruickshank) Gilbert of Old Abbey Road, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 21 October 1917 and buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.


W.S. GILBERT. SIG

W. GILHOLM. PTE
Walter Gilholm – age 39 – Private (629498) 47th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Walter emigrated to Canada in May 1904 and he was working as a plumber when he enlisted in Vernon, British Columbia in September 1915. He was a member of the local militia, the 6th Regiment, The Duke of Connaught's Own Rifles and he had served with the 2nd Scottish Horse in the South African War. He sailed with his battalion from Montreal in November 1915 and landed at Le Havre in August 1916.
Born 1877 in Athelstaneford, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Walter Stenhouse Gilholm. Son of George and Jane (Stenhouse) Gilholm of 21 Old Abbey Road, North Berwick. Husband of Julia (Brown) Gilholm, of 26 Avenue East, Vancouver, British Columbia and of Hollandale, Wisconsin, USA who he married in 1911 in Washington State, USA.
Killed in Action on 25 October 1916 and buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.

A. GILLIES. L.CPL
Archibald Gillies – age 27 – Lance Corporal (241739) Gordon Highlanders.
Archibald was employed in the seed trade when he enlisted. He died of tuberculosis at the family home in North Berwick.
Born 1892 in Govan, Glasgow as Archibald Webster Gillies. Son of Alexander and Margaret Hay (Webster) Gillies of Mount Airlie, St. Margaret's Road, North Berwick.
Died on 24 May 1919 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick.

I think this was intended to be his brother – but who survived the war.

James Webster Gillies – age ? – Driver (T4/186218) Royal Army Service Corps.
Born 1893 in Maryhill, Glasgow. Son of Alexander and Margaret Hay (Webster) Gillies of Mount Airlie, St. Margaret's Road, North Berwick.
James was an Hotel Chef in Bridge of Allan when he married in 1932 in Glasgow.
I believe he died in 1972 in Aberdeen.


J. GOODALL. PTE
James Goodall – age 34 – Private (38701) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
James was running the family grocery business in Market Place, North Berwick when he enlisted.
Born 1883 in North Berwick. Son of the late James Goodall (died 1902) and of the late Margaret (Anderson) Goodall (died 1913) of Market Place, North Berwick. His sister Alison was named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 26 August 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France


R. GOW. PTE
Roy Gow – age 21 – Private (3650) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Roy was a green keeper when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1895 in Direlton, Haddington/East Lothian. Son of Alexander Grant Gow and of Isabella (Jack) Gow of St. Andrew's Cottage, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Alexander Grant – age 20 – Private (40071) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry
Alexander enlisted as Private (1521) in the Royal Scots and was transferred to the HLI in France.
Born 1897 in North Berwick as Alexander Lawrence Grant. Son of David Grant and Isabella (Thomson) Grant of North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.

David Grant – age 36 – Private (M2/194204) Royal Army Service Corps attached to the 34th Combined Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
David was a well known professional golfer. He died of pneumonia in hospital in Marseilles while returning home after three years serving in Mesopotamia.
Born 1882 in North Berwick. Son of David Grant and Isabella (Thomson) Grant of North Berwick. Husband of Agnes Graham (Purves) Grant of 68 High Street, North Berwick who he married in 1911 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 6 July 1919 and buried in Mazargues War Cemetery, Marseilles, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.


T. GRAY. PTE

James Greenlaw – age 32 – Company Sergeant Major (19489) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
James was a chauffeur at the Point House, North Berwick when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined the 15th Royal Scots in France in June 1916. He died while a Prisoner of War at Limburg in Germany.
Born 1885 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of John and Catherine (Hogg) Greenlaw of 23 Victoria Road, North Berwick and of of 15 Meadowbank Avenue, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 6 May 1917 and buried in Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick.

Born 1892 in Kirkcaldy, Fife. Son of John and Georgina (Walker) Heggie of 3, Abbey Mews, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

James Hemingway – age 21 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion attached to the 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was educated at Cargilfield School in Edinburgh and at Loretto School in Musselburgh before going up to Trinity College, Oxford in 1913. He was commissioned from there in August 1914.
Born 1893 in North Berwick. Son of Charles Robert Hemingway and of Mary Elizabeth (McGregor) Hemingway of Rockville Lodge, North Berwick and of Penrhyn House, Clumber Road East, Nottingham.
Killed in Action on 9 May 1915 and buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the Cargilfield School, Loretto School and Trinity College memorials.


G.M. HERRIES, PTE
Gilbert Millar Herries – age 33 – Private (M2/149546) Mechanical Transport, No. 2 Water Tank Company, Army Service Corps.
Gilbert served his apprenticeship as a joiner in North Berwick. He died of pneumonia in the 45th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1885 in North Berwick. Son of the late Agnes Brunton (Millar) Herries (died 1899) and of William Herries, of North Berwick. Husband of Isabella Duckworth (Campbell) Herries of 2 Market Place, North Berwick who he married in 1907 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 9 November 1918 and buried in Awoingt British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.


C.A. HOGARTH, PTE
Charles Allan Hogarth – age 27 – Private (55845) 19th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Charles was a blacksmith when he enlisted in Toronto in November 1914. He sailed from Montreal with his battalion in May 1915 and landed at Boulogne in September.
Born 1888 in Darnick, Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Thomas Hogarth (died 1889) and of Jane (Smith) Hogarth later Mrs John Redpath of Montreal. (They married in Edinburgh in 1894 and by 1901 the family were in North Berwick. John, Jane and their two youngest children, Thomas and John, emigrated to Canada in May 1911) Husband of Sophia Lang (Graham) Hogarth of 31 Lindams Avenue, Uddingston, Lanarkshire who he married in January 1915 in Wentworth, Ontario.
Killed in Action on 5 June 1916 and buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium.

T. HOGG, PTE
Thought to be:
Thomas Hogg, Military Medal – age 26 – Corporal (43483) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Thomas as Private (2585) landed at Alexandria in Egypt with the 1/6th Royal Scots in September 1915. They came under command of Western Frontier Force until February 1916 when they moved to France, landed at Marseilles in May 1916 when they amalgamated with 1/5th to become 5/6th Battalion. At some point Thomas transferred to the 15th Royal Scots and was awarded a MM in March 1917.
Born 1890 in Haddington, East Lothian. Son of John and Alison (Buchanan) Hogg. Husband of Sarah Laidlaw (Elder) Hogg of 4 East St. James Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 28 April 1917 and buried in Roeux British Cemetery, France.


W. G. HOULDSWORTH, 2nd LT
William Gilbert Houldsworth – age 23 – Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William was educated at Wellington House, Westgate, at Eton College and at Magdalen College, Oxford from where he graduated in March 1914 and where he was a 2nd Lt in the Officer Training Corps. He was commissioned in the Scots Guards and landed with them at Le Havre in August 1914. William was fatally wounded on the Aisne and died in the American Hospital at Neuilly near Paris.
Born in 1891 in Marylebone, London. Son of the Rev. William Thomas and Eulalie (Venables) Houldsworth of Cranston, North Berwick and of 44, Lennox Gardens, Kensington, London.
Died of Wounds on 23 September 1914 and buried in Neuilly-Sur-Seine New Communal Cemetery, France.


H. M. HUME, PTE
Hector Munro Hume – age 21 – Private (S/3652) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Hector was a caddie when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was badly wounded and evacuated home in September. It was June 1917 before he retuned to the front and he was killed two months later.
Born 1896 in North Berwick. Son of Alexander and Catherine (Munro) Hume of Market Place, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

George was a gardener's labourer at Leuchie Gardens, North Berwick when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised as Private (4892) in March 1916 and joined his battalion in France in July.
Born 1897 in North Berwick. Son of George and Ellen (Brown) Hunter of Canty Bay, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Crump Trench British Cemetery, Fampoux, France.


C, J. HUTCHISON, A.M.
Charles John Hutchison – age 28 – Air Mechanic 2nd Class (44754) 25 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.
Charles was a golf club maker in Woking, Surrey when he enlisted in August 1916. He drowned while bathing with some comrades.
Born 1890 in North Berwick. Son of Alexander Campbell Hutchison and Jessie of Sanderson (Denholm) Hutchison of North Berwick. Husband of Beatrice Annie Eliza (Cox). Hutchison of 17 West Street, Woking who he married in 1912 in Woking.
Died on Active Service on 17 June 1917 and buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick, on the North Berwick High School memorial and on the Woking War Memorial.


D. F. HUTCHISON, CAPT
David Fancourt Hutchison – age 21 – Captain, 3rd Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
David had enlisted in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in 1914 and as Lance Corporal (977) he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Boulogne in November 1914. He was commissioned in the YLI in January 1917 and he was promoted to Adjutant and Captain in April 1918.
Born 1897 in North Berwick. Son of the late James Hay Hutchison (died 1912) and of Alison (Bisset) Hutchison of Argyle Lodge, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 29 August 1918 and buried in Brie British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial.

H. HUTCHISON, A.B.

Henry Hutchison – age 53 – Deck Hand (SD331) Royal Naval Reserve.
Henry was a stone mason when he enlisted in April 1915. He served on various trawler on anti-submarine and mine-sweeping duties but became ill and was discharged from the navy in July 1917. Henry died of heart disease at his home in North Berwick.
Born 1864 in Banff. Son of the late Charles and Ann (Christie) Hutchison. Husband of Robina (Smith) Hutchison of 21 Melbourne Place, North Berwick who he married in 1895 in Colinton, Midlothian.
Died on 27 October 1917.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick.


R. A. JACOBS, PTE
Roy Armstrong Jacobs – age 19 – Private (55335) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Born 1899 in Derby. Son of the late Arthur William Jacobs (died 1917) and of Margaret Armstrong (Marsh) Jacobs of The Imperial Hotel, North Berwick,
Missing in Action on 22 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


J. JARDINE, PTE
John Jardine – age 38 – Private (442106) 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John was ranching at Kelowna, British Columbia when he enlisted in Vernon in June 1915. He sailed in November and joined his battalion in France in December 1915. He was wounded in June 1916 and evacuated to England. He was diagnosed with myalgia and repatriated to Canada. John was discharged from the Army in Vancouver in April 1918 but he died four months later.
Born 1880 in Edinburgh. Son of the late John Jardine (died 1913) and of Agnes (Smith) Jardine of 3 Old Abbey Road, North Berwick. Husband of Lizzie (Laidlaw) Neiland (formerly Jardine) of 341, Mile Post, P.G.E. Railway, B.C.
Died on 28 August 1918 and buried in North Vancouver Cemetery, Canada.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.

G. JOHNSTON, L.CPL
George Johnston – age 32 – Lance Corporal (158) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
George joined the Army ten years earlier and for the whole of that period he has been on service in India, where he was employed as a schoolmaster in the battalion. In August 1914 he was with his battalion in Bareilly, India and they moved to France, landing at Marseilles on 12 October 1914. Previous to joining the colours he was an ironmonger's assistant in North Berwick and in Edinburgh.
Born 1883 in North Berwick. Son of Isabella Johnston. Nephew of Miss Mary Johnston, of Wall Cottage, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial and on the North Berwick High School memorial.


J. KELLAGHER, PTE
James Kellagher – age 21 – Private (325547) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a golf club maker when he enlisted as Private (7861) in the 2/8th Royal Scots in November 1915. He was posted to the 1/8th Battalion in France in June 1917. He became ill and was evacuated to the the Derby War Hospital in Warrington in November 1917. James returned to France in March 1918 but he was fatally wounded less than a month later.
Born 1896 in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Bridget (O'Brien) Kellagher of Abbey Road, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 13 April 1918 and buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.


R. KEPPIE, PTE
Roderick Manson Keppie – age 23 – Private (S/13183) Depot, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Roderick was a golf club maker when he enlisted as Private (2979) in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in August 1914 and he joined the 1st Battalion in France in May 1915. He was wounded at Ypres and invalided home. After he had recovered he was posted to the 2nd Black Watch in Mesopotamia where he contracted malaria and was again evacuated home. Roddie died in an Auxiliary Hospital in Liverpool.
Born 1894 in North Berwick. Son of John and Ina McLeod (Manson) Keppie of 76 High Street, North Berwick.
Died on Service on 29 March 1917 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)

J. LITTLE, PTE
James S. Little, Private – age 58 – Canadian Army Medical Corps.
James served his apprenticeship as a tailor under his father in North Berwick and in 1911 James (aged 52) was a tailor in North Berwick, living with his wife Gavina ("38") and his daughter Eva ("8")
Thanks to research by members of the CEF Study Group, the family were at Spadina Avenue in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and that James had joined the Non-Permanent Active Militia, serving with the Royal Canadian Medical Service. James died of pneumonia in the Spadina Military Hospital in Toronto.
Born 1858 in North Berwick. Son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Lyall) Little. Husband of Gavina Cochrane (Oughton) who he married in 1896 in North Berwick.
Died on Service on 26 April 1918 and buried in Toronto (Prospect) Cemetery, Canada.
Also named as James S. Little on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the Royal Canadian Medical Service memorial located adjacent to the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre at Canadian Forces Base Borden.


H. LOGAN, PTE
Henry Logan – age 33 – Private (351352) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Henry was a caddie and professional golfer in North Berwick before taking a position as a professional in the Philippine Islands. He returned to enlist at the outbreak of war and joined his battalion in November 1915. He went to France in 1916 but was captured and spent 3 years as a Prisoner of War. Henry died of illness in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station in Cologne.
Born 1886 in North Berwick. Son of the late William Logan (died 1900) and of Elizabeth (Thomson) Logan. His sister, Agnes L. Field was named as his legatee.
Died on Service on 5 January 1919 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.


J. T. LONGSTAFF, PTE
John Thompson Longstaff – age 38 – Private (29348) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a coachman at Leuchie House, North Berwick when he enlisted.
Born 1879 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Son of the late John and Jane Longstaff, of Swalwell, Co. Durham. Husband of Mary (Dagg) Longstaff of West Lodge, Leuchie House, North Berwick who he married in 1902 in Hexham, Northumberland.
Died of Wounds on 2 March 1917 and buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery, Frevent, France.

Three sons of the late Walter Fitzgerald Knox Lyon (died 1894) and Isabella Romanes (Towers-Clark) Lyon, of Tantallon Lodge, North Berwick.

Alexander Patrick Francis Lyon – age 26 – Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Alexander was educated at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was commissioned from there in 1907 and promoted two years later. He was an Army Interpreter when he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914 but he was killed two weeks later.
Born 1888 in Kensington, London.

Charles James Lyon – age 24 – Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Charles was educated at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was commissioned from there in 1909. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August 1914.
Born 1890 in Kensington, London.
Missing in Action on 13 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


W. S. S. LYON, LT
Walter Scott Stuart Lyon – age 28 – Lieutenant, 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Walter was educated at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire before studying the Classics at Oxford and becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh from where he gradated in 1912. He had joined the Territorial 9th (Highlanders) Battalion in 1910 and was promoted in February 1913. He was a Staff Captain, Lothian Brigade during 1914-15 before he joined the 1/9th Battalion in France in March 1915. He was the author of "Easter at Ypres 1915, and other Poems." before he was killed at Ypres.
Born 1886 in North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 8 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Faculty of Advocates memorial in Edinburgh, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.

Alexander McCraw – age 20 – Private (66102) 141st Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Alexander was a ploughman at Redden Farm, Ednam, Roxburghshire when he enlisted as Private (25625) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the MGC in France.
Born 1897 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Margaret (Slater) McCraw of Redden Cottage, Ednam and of Kersheugh, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 30 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorila and on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.

William McCraw – age 22 – Private (206111) "C" Battalion, Tank Corps.
William enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in May 1915 and as Gunner (961) he was posted to the 6th (Armoured Car) Battery of the Motor Machine Gun Service in France in October 1915. This later became part of the Machine Gun Corps (Motors) In late 1916, many men of the MGC(M) were transferred to the Heavy Section, MGC, which in July 1917 became the Tank Corps.
Born 1895 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Margaret (Slater) McCraw of Redden Cottage, Ednam and of Kersheugh, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorila and on the Ednam Parish War Memorial.

George Alexander McDonald – age 24 – Private (1024) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George had worked as a joiner in Melrose, Roxburghshire before he moved to Haddington, East Lothian. He enlisted in Dunbar and landed with his battalion at La Havre in November 1914 but he was killed six months later near Festubert.
Born 1890 in North Berwick. Son of Robert and Jane (Durie) McDonald of Smith Street and of Albert Place, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Darnick Village War Memorial and on the Melrose War Memorial.

Thought to be:
Daniel McDonald – age 26 – Private (8323) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Daniel landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August 1914 but he was killed a month later on the Aisne.
Born 1888 in Musselburgh. Son of the late James and Barbara (McEwan) McDonald (died 1913) His brothers James and Robert were named as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 14 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.


R. MACDONALD, PTE
Robert MacDonald – age 33 – Private (40850) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert was a gardener, living with his family at the Old Post Office in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian, when he enlisted as Private (2273) in the 8th Royal Scots in December 1915. He was mobilised as Private (112370) in May 1916 and posted to the 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers in France in October 1916 but he became ill with bronchitis and he was evacuated to hospital in London in January 1917. Robert returned to France in June and joined the 6th/7th RSF in August but he was killed three weeks later.
Born 1884 in Penston, Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late James Macdonald and of the late Mary (Allison) Macdonald (both died 1904) of Abbey Farm, North Berwick. Husband of Elspet (Mitchell) McDonald of 12 Fidra Avenue, Dirleton who he married in 1909 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dirleton Parish War Memorial – as R. McDonald

William Whitelaw MacDonald – age 19 – Private (59222) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1899 in North Berwick. Son of the late William Macdonald (died 1914) and of Jane (Whitelaw) McDonald of North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 4 November 1918 and buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.

C. W. MACFIE, 2nd LT
Claud William MacFie – age 22 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment attached to the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
Claud was educated at Cargilfield School in Edinburgh and at Marlborough College before attending New College, Oxford where he gained an Honours degree in History prior to joining the Diplomatic Service. He was awarded a commission from his College from November 1914 and went to France in May 1915 but he was killed a month later at Givenchy.
Born 1892 at Gogar Burn in Corstorphine, Midlothian. Son of the late Claud MacFie of Gogar Burn (died 1903) and of Mary (Young) MacFie Warrix, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 16 June 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Marlborough College War Memorials. On the St Giles Cathedral Congregation memorial in Edinburgh and on an individual memorial in St Baldred's Church in North Berwick.


F. McGRAIL, PTE
Frank McGrail – age 20 – Private (1004) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Frank was employed as an assistant on the Old Golf Course, North Berwick and was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November.
Born 1895 in North Berwick as Francis. Son of James and Catherine (Kilrane) McGrail of Forth Street Lane, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


D. MACGREGOR, PTE
Thought to be:
Donald Macgregor – age 31 – Corporal (15404) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1901 Donald was a house painter, living with his family in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He was living in Fulham, London when he enlisted in North Berwick and he landed with his battalion in France in July 1915. Donald was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1883 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Son of the late William and Elizabeth (McLachlan) Macgregor. His older siblings Barbara, Robert and William were named as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

James Walker McKellar – age 23 – Sapper (46940) 95th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
James was a plumber living at Cumberland Street, Edinburgh when he enlisted in September 1914. He went to France in August 1915.
Born 1893 in Rafford, Forres, Elginshire/Moray. Son of John and Catherine (McNab) McKellar of 74 High Street and of 6 Marmion Road, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 3 December 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.1, France.


P. G. MACKENZIE, CPL
Peter Guilar Mackenzie – age 37 – Corporal (38679) 15th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter was a greenkeeper at the Burgh Golf course, North Berwick when he enlisted.
Peter was buried in the La Menegate German Cemetery and was reinterred in May 1922.
Born 1881 in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Jane (Guilar) Mackenzie of Dirleton and of Smith's Cottage Gullane. Husband of Sarah (Gibson) Mackenzie of Duns, Berwickshire who he married in 1913 in Berwick-on-Tweed.
Killed in Action on 10 April 1918 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Gullane War Memorial together with his brother William Guilar Mackenzie, Private (2691) 55th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died 19 October 1917.



R. MACKENZIE, A.B.

Roderick McKenzie – age 43 – Able Seaman (172944 & B/5159) HMS Pembroke, Royal Navy.
Roderick had served his apprenticeship as a baker in Tranent, Haddingtonshire when he joined the navy as a “Boy” in August 1894. He was transferred to the Fleet Reserve in June 1908 and was mobilised in August 1914. He served throughout the war but was admitted to hospital at the shore base HMS Pembroke with pneumonia in July 1918. Roderick was discharged from the navy in March 1919 and was working as a cattleman when he died of a second bout of pneumonia at Highfield Farm, Dirleton, near North Berwick.
Born 1876 in Haddington as Mackenzie. Son of the late Donald and Alexdrina (McMillan) McKenzie of Tranent, Haddingtonshire. Husband of Mary McFarlane (Redpath) Mackenzie who he married in 1907 in Tranent.
Died on 22 November 1919.

John Macleod – age 38 – Leading Boatman (162317/PO) Coastguard Station (North Berwick) Royal Navy.
John was a fisherman when he joined the navy as a “Boy” in December 1893. He came to North Berwick in May 1914 but was accidentally killed by a sentry at Seacliffe War Signal Station, Whitekirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Born 12/1875 in Lochs, Lewis. Son of Kenneth and Joanna (McMillan) McLeod. Husband of Catherine McLeod.
Died on Service on 23 September 1914 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick.
