SYDNEY CAIRNS Pte. K.O.S.B.

Served as:
Sydney Richardson – age 20 – Private (20829) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Sydney enlisted in July 1915 and was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in October. At some point he transferred to the 6th KOSB in France and was wounded and taken prisoner near Arras on 3 May 1917. Some records show that he died a week later but others state that he died at the end of May.
(CWGC and ICRC PoW records have 29 May. SDGW and Army Registers of Soldiers effects have 10 May)
Born 1897 in Kelso, Roxburghshire as Sydney Cairns. Son of Margaret (Cairns) Richardson and step-son of John Richardson of East End, Denholm, Roxburghshire. They married in 1901 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 29 May 1917 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Hessen, Germany.
Also named on the Denholm War Memorial as Sydney C. Richardson.


JOSEPH S. COCHRANE SERGt. A.&S.H.
Joseph Swinton Cochrane, Military Medal – age 28 – Sergeant (10025) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Joseph enlisted in 1904 and in 1911 was a Private with the 1st A&SH in Malta. They were at Dinapore in India in August 1914 and returned to England in November before landing at Le Havre in December. The 10th A&SH arrived at Boulogne in May 1915 and Joseph was serving with them as a Corporal when he was awarded the M.M. in early 1916. He was fatally wounded later that year and died two days later in a Casualty Clearing Station near Albert.
Born 1888 in Lilliesleaf. Son of David and Catherine (Swinton) Cochrane of Linthill, Lilliesleaf.
Died of Wounds on 14 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.


JAMES DEANS Pte. K.O.S.B.
James Deans – age 19 – Private (7030) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed on Chapel Farm, Lilliesleaf when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Westruther, Berwickshire as James Rutherford Deans.
Son of David and Elizabeth (Rutherford) Deans of Easter Langlee, Galashiels, Selkirkshire and of Greenknowe, Gordon, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Galashiels Roll of Honour.

GEORGE GRANT Pte. ROYAL MARINES.
George Donald Grant – age 17 – Gunner (RMA/14651) HMS Defence, Royal Marine Artillery.
George enlisted in June 1915. During the naval battle of Jutland the cruiser “Defence” was struck by two salvoes from the German ships that detonated her rear magazine. The fire from that explosion spread to the ship's secondary magazines, which exploded.
Born 1898 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Louis or Lewis Grant and of Isabella (Laidlaw) Grant of Galashiels. (both died 1906). His next of kin was his eldest brother David Grant of Corporation Buildings, Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Galashiels Roll of Honour.


JAMES HOPE Pte. K.O.S.B.
James Hope – age 25 – Private (16744) 28th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
James was resident in Lilliesleaf when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He landed as Private (12458) with the 6th Battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. The 28th MGC was formed in January 1916 in the same Brigade as the 6th KOSB.
Born 1891 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Forsyth) Hope of Eckford, Roxburghshire (died 1902) and of Robert Hope of Park Barn, Brampton, Cumberland.
In 1911 the family (with Robert's second wife Jane) were in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire and by 1914 were at Hermiston Farm, Lilliesleaf.
Missing in Action on 16 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

ROBERT HUME Pte. SCOTT. HORSE.
Robert Hume – age 39 – Private (S/24072) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert enlisted in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire as Private (2272) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry. He was posted to the Black Watch in France.
Born 1879 in Lilliesleaf. Son of the late Eliza (Turnbull) Hume (died 1893) and of William Hume of Lilliesleaf.
Killed in Action on 28 May 1918 and buried in Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Tillicoultry War Memorial.


JOHN IRVINE Pte. K.O.S.B.
John Irvine – age 22 – Private (23867) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a ploughman at Clerklands Farm, Lilliesleaf when he enlisted in June 1916. He joined his battalion in France in September and was wounded at Arras in April 1917 and again in March 1918. John died in the 2nd Canadian Hospital at Le Treport five days after suffering from a mustard gas attack.
Born 1895 in Ashkirk, Selkirkshire. Son of James and Helen (Jackson) Irvine of Clerklands, Lilliesleaf.
Died of Wounds on 6 October 1918 and buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.


FRANK KERR L/Cpl. K.O.S.B.
Francis Kerr – age 31 – Lance Corporal (6850) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank was employed as a draper's traveller when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he contracted dysentery and died on the hospital ship “Aquitania”. Frank was buried at sea.
Born 1884 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of Andrew and Agnes (Brodie) Kerr, of Hawthorn Cottage, Lilliesleaf.
Died on Active Service on 20 October 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PRINGLE LEITHEAD Pte. LOVAT SCOUTS.
Pringle Leithead – age 27 – Private (201260) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Pringle had been a ploughman at Clerklands Farm, Lilliesleaf before working as a carter with a coal merchant in Hawick. He enlisted in November 1915 and joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8265) in 1916, serving as officer's orderly to Lieutenant Macpherson in Palestine. (see below)
Born 1890 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of Adam and Catherine or Christina (Borthwick) Leithead of 5 Princes Street, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

Colour Sergeant (686) John Malcolm Macpherson of Jedburgh, 1/4th KOSB, served at Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine and was commissioned in June 1916. He survived the war, joined the Indian Civil Service and died in India in April 1921.


ANDREW LINDORES Pte. K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Andrew Lindores – age 26 – Private (7106) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in early June 1915.
Born 1888 in Earlston, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Janet (Burrell) Lindores of Crossflat, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire and of Corsbie, Earlston.
Died of Wounds on 22 June 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Boswells Parish War Memorial.


ANDREW McKINNON Pte. K.O.S.B.
Andrew McKinnon – age 23 – Private (29571) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1894 in Minto, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Helen (Nichol) McKinnon of Lilliesleaf.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

GEORGE MILLAR SERGt. CANADIANS.
George Millar – age 29 – Sergeant (30664) 13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada – Black Watch) Canadian Infantry.
George had served his apprenticeship as a baker in Melrose but had been working for the Rosedale Coal Company in Alberta when he enlisted in the Canadian Army Service Corps in 1913. He attested for overseas service at Valcartier Camp, Quebec in September 1914. He was promoted to Sergeant and posted to the 13th Battalion in France in April 1915 but was attached to the 171st Company of the Royal Engineers in August before joining the Canadian Brigade Mining Section in September. George rejoined his battalion in March 1916 but was killed three months later.
Born 1886 in Lilliesleaf. Son of the late Beatrice (Gray) Millar (died 1910) and of John Millar of Lilliesleaf and of 20 Tower Street, Selkirk. Husband of Janet (Smart) Millar of 45 Magdala Terrace and of 269 Galapark Road, Galashiels who he married in December 1915 in Edinburgh,
Missing in Action on 13 June 1916 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


DAVID MOODY Cpl. K.O.S.B.
David was named on a Lilliesleaf Roll of Honour in December 1914.
David Moody – age 33 – Company Sergeant Major (12673) 1st Garrison Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
In 1901 David, aged 15, was a rabbit catcher in Mertoun, Berwickshire and in 1911 he was serving with the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers in India. He became a postman in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire in August 1913 and, as an Army Reservist, he was mobilised a year later. He was posted as Corporal (8976) to the 2nd KOSB in France in November 1914. Later he served with the 8th KOSB before joining the 9th (Reserve) KOSB, which became the 53rd Training Reserve Battalion in September 1916, where he was Sergeant (2/4062) At some point David was transferred to the Gordon Highlanders in India where he died of heat stroke in the Stationary Hospital in Rawalpindi
Born 1885 in Mertoun, Berwickshire. Son of the late Jane (Douglas) Moody (died 1890) and of David Moody of Mertoun and of Norham-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Husband of Isabella (Moor) Moody of 16 High Street, Jedburgh and of Felkington, Northumberland who he married in 1913 in Berwick, Northumberland.
Died on Service on 6 June 1918 and buried in Rawalpindi War Cemetery, Pakistan.
Also named on the Jedburgh War Memorial and on the Ladykirk Parish Church Roll of Honour in Berwickshire (just across the river from Norham)

WILLIAM OGILVIE Pte. GORDON HIGHrs.
William Ogilvie – age 20 – Private (S/3192) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William enlisted in Kirkcaldy in Fife and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1895 in Tranent, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of William Ogilvie and of Jane Elliot (Glendinning) Ogilvie of Greycrook, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.
William senior had been a coachman and in 1901 the family were in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, in 1911 at Leuchars in Fife, and from 1914 he was a chauffeur, living at South Lodge, Linthill, Lilliesleaf.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Leuchars Parish War Memorial.


THOMAS OLIVER Pte. SCOTS GUARDS.
Thought to be:
Thomas Richardson Oliver – age 19 – Private (12171) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas joined his battalion in France June 1915.
Born 1895 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of William Douglas Oliver of Brougham Place, Hawick and of Jane (Richardson) Oliver of Winningtonrig, Stobs, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 5 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Stobs War Memorial and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


JAMES ROBINSON Pte. ROYAL SCOTS.
James Robinson – age 39 – Private (40265) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a mole-catcher and rabbit-trapper when he enlisted in 1916 and that same year he was posted as Private (25090) to the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borders in France but was transferred to the 12th Royal Scots. He was evacuated home suffering from trench feet and he returned to France, to the 1/9th Royal Scots, in early 1917. He was still reported as missing in June 1919 but his remains were identified and interred at Marteville.
Born 1878 in Lilliesleaf. Son of the late Catherine (Watson) Robinson (died 1908) and of James Robinson. Husband of Mary (Drummond) Robinson of Eildon View, Lilliesleaf who he married in 1905 in Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 22 March 1918 and buried in Marteville Communal Cemetery, Attilly, France.

GEORGE SMITH Pte. CANADIANS.
George Smith – age 31 – Private (424215) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
George was a store-keeper when he enlisted at Melville, Saskatchewan in January 1915. Initially he was posted to the 9th Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe in Kent and then to the 5th Battalion in France in July 1915.
Born 1885 in Selkirk. Son of John and Mary (Carmichael) Smith of Easter Cottages and of Catfrald, Lilliesleaf.
Missing in Action on 28 April 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


ARTHUR W. SWORD Pte. K.O.S.B.
Arthur Wright Sword – age 20 – Private (7357) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Arthur landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Midlem Village, Bowden, Roxburghshire. Son of the late William Sword (died 1902) and Agnes (Harvey) Sword of Cavers Carre, Bowden and of Lilliesleaf.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk Roll of Honour as SWORD, ARTHUR W., Private, K.O.S.B., 9 months.


FRANK TURNBULL Pte. L. & B. HORSE.
Frank Turnbull – age 26 – Private (32828) 2nd Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Frank moved with his family to Satchells, Lilliesleaf in 1911 and he enlisted as Private (2029) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry in October 1914. He was transferred to the Royal Scots and went to Salonica in northern Greece in 1916 where he was posted to the KSLI.
Frank died of pneumonia in the 25th Casualty Clearing Station at Doiran.
Born 1891 in Burnmouth, Castleton, Roxburghshire as Frank. Son of James and Betsy (Turnbull) Turnbull of Satchells, Lilliesleaf.
Died on Active Service on 30 September 1918 and buried in Doiran Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire.


ADAM WILSON Pte. R.A.S.C.
Adam Wilson – age 21 – Rifleman (B/201763) 2/5th Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) posted to 1/28th Battalion, London Regiment (Artists' Rifles)
Adam was a shepherd at Huntlaw Farm. Lilliesleaf when he enlisted in the Army Service Corps in May 1915 and as Driver (T/4/086554) he landed in France in September 1915. Later he transferred to the London Regiment and was serving with the 1/28th Battalion when he was made a prisoner of war. Adam died in the German Camp at Kassel and was buried there.
Born 1897 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Leithead) Wilson of Newhouse, Lilliesleaf. Grandson of Adam Leithead of 5 Princes Street, Hawick.
Died on Service on 5 April 1918 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Germany.
