The area around the memorial looks very different in this old hand coloured postcard, the area on which it sits doesn't seem as raised from the pic i've seen.

Derek.

The original site of the Dunblane memorial (as shown in your view) was what is now the southwest quadrant of the Four Ways roundabout (junction of High Street / Perth Road / Glen Road) by St Mary's Church -- at 56°11'16.0"N 3°57'35.5"W (NN7846501190) -- more or less where the ornamental signpost now stands. I'd say the photo on the card would have been taken looking south from the gate of St Mary's.

There was discussion in 1937-38 about the need to move the memorial because it stood in the way of a greatly widened route of the A9 which it was planned would run up to St Mary's from a new bridge over the Allen Water. The County Council proposed moving the memorial to a site by the entrance to the Hydro, but there were local objections to this plan, and three alternatives sites in all were discussed.

As it happened, however, even though the new bridge (work on which began on 12.06.39) duly opened in 1940, the plans for the new road had by then been severely scaled down (no doubt due to the outbreak of WW2) and it was constructed as a single carriageway only, which meant that the memorial could stay where it was.

It wasn't until 1959 that the (then) A9 was finally dualled between the 1940 bridge and Four Ways, and it was then that the memorial was indeed taken down and moved to its present site on the Haugh.
