Oldmeldrum - Gordon District
UKNIWM Ref No. 8618

The Oldmeldrum war memorial is a dressed grey granite memorial featuring the life-size sculpture of a kilted highland infantryman with head bowed and arms reversed standing on a tapering classical pedestal which rests on a plinth of two low steps. The commemoration is on the face of the pedestal with a wreath carved in relief beneath. The names of the dead are listed on the remaining faces of the pedestal.
The monument was by Stewart & Co. of Aberdeen and the sculpture of the soldier may be the work of the Aberdeen granite mason Robert Warrack Morrison. More information on Morrison may be viewed here:
http://www.leopardmag.co.uk/feats/42/robert-morrison-king-of-the-granite-carvers

The monument stands at the entrance to the kirkyard on Kirk Brae, opposite the junction with Keil Brae, AB51 ODJ.

OLDMELDRUM
UKNIWM Ref: 8618

Address
PARISH CHURCH
OLDMELDRUM
ABERDEENSHIRE
SCOTLAND

Type: SERVICEMAN/WOMAN
Denomination: CHURCH OF SCOTLAND
OS Map Ref: NJ 814 273

Inscription
ERECTED / IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS / DISTRICT WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN / THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS / LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS /

Interestingly the text dedicates this memorial to the " men of this district " rather that those from the Parish of Meldrum alone.

I have put up these images of the splendid mourning soldier figure (Gordon Highlander) aware that some will be interested to see them. It is typical of the work of sculptor Robert Warrack Morrison when engaged by Morren & Co and Stewart & Co of Aberdeen. As yet, I do not know who created this fine example.
