Warship Names
Location: Overlooking Loch Eriboll, Sutherland
OS Ref: NC 42 60 (That's the best I can do at this time)

I tried last year to find these stones overlooking Loch Eriboll on the North coast of Sutherland but could not see them from the road.

This photograph from a Northern Times of 2002 and shows the stones gathered and painted for the destroyer HMS Sutherland. Nearby but not in the photograph are other stones from ships going back to the 1920's including HMS Hood.

Unfortunately I don't have any other photographs of the stones at the moment.

Today the BBC report that the crew of HMS Sutherland are return to the area and repaint these stones. Hopefully they will be more visible from the road.

The BBC have got the story a bit wrong. 'SUTHERLAND' was added to the hillside by the crew of HMS 'Sutherland'. The Crew from HMS 'Hood' left their ship's name 'HOOD' in stones.

Regards

Adam

The H.M.S. Sutherland sailed into Invergordon this morning. Tried to get a picture but the pier is hiding most of the ship.
