Definitely neither of those then!

Perhaps he served under an alias? If so, then 'usually' the CWGC database gives a hint of both names, but that doesn't seem to be the case either.

From memory, I think I searched through Census Returns too, and found the 'Rev.' Gowanlock, but (again from memory) I don't think he was married, or if he was, there was no sign of any children.

Curious!

A theory about T Gowanlock - prompted by finding Thomas Gowanlock on the St Ninian's Old Parish Church memorial (no rank or regiment stated)
I found an online Gowanlock family tree with the name William Thomas born 1884, died 1919. What if he were known as Thomas - there were loads of other Williams in the family. This one was born in Glasgow but he might have been stationed in Stirling, perhaps even billeted in one of the churches. Mistakes in the regiment were quite common, I've found, especially if it wasn't a local lad. I can't begin to explain why there are two dates of death for what is quite clearly the same person!

Possibly the info from SNWM is a bit wonky?

According to SDGW (Ancestry's version), No. 265463 was WALTER Gowanlock, MM, killed in action 29th July 1918, 8th Bn., Scottish Rifles - details match CWGC.

There might be yet another contender if Thomas was perhaps his middle name:

James T. Gowanlock, No, 1455, 7th Bn., Scottish Rifles, enlisted at Glasgow, died 28th June 1915.

No apparent connection to Cambusbarron either. Confused

George Laurie Morrison, Forestry Worker, age 31 of Cambusbaron died in Stirling Royal Infirmary on 29 July 1956 due to "paraplegia war wounds - 12 years" and other things.
Wounded in Normandy perhaps?

A further twist to the search for Thomas Gowanlock on the Cambusbarron memorial. In the Stirling Observer of 18.11.2015, there is an article regarding a new memorial to those who fought in WW1 from Cambusbarron. In the list of those who died is Private James T Gowanlock so he could be the Scottish Rifles one - just need to find a Cambusbarron connection. The Memorial is housed in the Grierson Hall at the Community Centre - perhaps someone there might know.

There is a posting from way back in 2011 in the Q&R thread

Jim McGinlay seems to have found a Gowanlock Family stone in Cathcart Cemetery. He hasn't got round to posting the photo.

Apparently the stone in Cathcart lists James (Tait) Gowanlock and his brother - Walter Gowanlock, both of them being in the Cameronians.

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=6569&highlight=gowanlock

The family were in Pollokshields, Glasgow in 1911 but they did get about a bit.
Looking at the 1901 on Ancestry they were in West Lothian - the father, born Edinburgh was a Mercantile Clerk, the mother and some of the children (including James Tait Gowanlock) were born in Ireland, the others in Glasgow.
SDGW and Soldiers effects confirm birthplace and father.
