An impressive memorial which is now showing its age.





Note the pelican and offspring symbolism here.

"Robert Campbell, a Reservist, a native of Muirkirk, Ayrshire, was resident at Trannent, joined the 1st Bat. Black Watch on August 5th, and after going to France went missing during an engagement. No more was heard about him till it was notified officially that he was a prisoner of war in Germany. Yesterday notification was received from the War Office to the effect that he had died during his interment as a prisoner of war in Germany. He leaves a widow and child."

AITHIE, JAMES R.
This entry is thought to refer to two brothers, James and Robert Aithie.
James Aithie – age 31 – Private (43118) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a member of the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots and as Private (836) he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November but by August 1915 he had been wounded and evacuated home. After he had recovered he was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France.
Born 1886 in Cranston, Midlothian. Son of George and Elizabeth (Allan) Aithie of Fountainhall, Pencaitland, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

Robert Aithie – age 19 – Private (1031) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a member of the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 but he died less than three months later.
Born 1895 in Ormiston, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Robert Thomson Aithie. Son of George and Elizabeth (Allan) Aithie of Fountainhall, Pencaitland, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 27 January 1915 and buried in Sailly-Sur-La-Lys Churchyard, France.

The brothers are named individually on the Pencaitland Parish War Memorial.


AITHIE, WILLIAM
William Aithie – age 16 – Private (1186) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1899 in Tranent as William Hamilton. Son of William and Euphemia (Adams or Smith) Hamilton of 16 Baillie's Row, Tranent.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


AITKEN, WILLIAM
William Wallace Aitken – age 36 – Private (202141) 1/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a tailor in West Port, Haddington when he enlisted.
Born 1880 in Tranent. Son of Charles and Mary (Wallace) Aitken of Tranent. Husband of Harriet Smith (Russell) Aitken of Station Road, Haddington who he married in 1904 in Tranent.
Died of Wounds on 31 May 1918 and buried in Anzin-St. Aubin British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Haddington War Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington.

John Howie Alexander – age 29 – Private (38167) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.

BAIRD, ANDREW
Andrew Baird – age 30 – Private (917) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew was a coal miner and a member of the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots. He was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 but he was killed less than three months later.
Born 1885 in Tranent. Son of the late Beatrice (Fairgrieve) Baird (died 1908) and of Andrew Baird of Tranent.
Killed in Action on 29 January 1915 and buried in Bois-Grenier Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Elphinstone Village War Memorial.


BAIRD, DAVID
David Baird – age 19 – Private (S/43229) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
David enlisted as Private (33362) in the Royal Scots Fusiliers and he was posted as Private (S/15870) to the Gordon Highlanders. He was transferred as Private (S/20725) to the Seaforth Highlanders Labour Company and then as Private (8417) to the Labour Corps before returning to the Seaforths.
Born 1897 in Tranent. Son of Peter and Mary Sneddon (McIntosh) Baird of Tranent.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1917 and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.


BAIRD, JOHN
John Baird – age 28 – Private (3416) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a coal miner when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed in France with his battalion in July 1915.
Born 1888 in Tranent as John Redpath Baird. Son of the late James Bathgate Baird (died 1905) and of Agnes (Redpath) Baird (died 1912) of Tranent. Husband of Euphemia Davidson (Smith) Baird of 10 Park Road, Tranent and of 7 Church Street, Haddington who he married in 1910 in Tranent.
Missing in Action on 12 May 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

William Balfour – age 39 – Private (30020) 1/6th (City of Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William was a stone mason when he enlisted. He died of influenza and pneumonia at his home in Tranent.
Born 1879 in Tranent. Son of David and Mary (Ritchie) Balfour of 39 Fowler Street, Tranent. Husband of Elizabeth (Farrell) Balfour of 25 Fowler Street, Tranent who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 22 February 1919 and buried in Tranent New Cemetery. (CWG)


BARR, JOHN
John Barr – age 21 – Private (S/25876) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Born 1897 in Torphicen, Linlithgowshire/West Lothian. Son of the late Robert Barr (died 1915) and of Catherine (Robertson) Barr of 39 Fowler Street, Tranent.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Joncourt British Cemetery, France.


BATHGATE, SIMON
Simon Bathgate – age 21 – Private (11863) 113th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Simon enlisted as Private (27539) in the Royal Scots and transferred to the MGC in France.
Born 1895 at Macmerry in Gladsmuir Parish, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Thomas and of Mary Ann (McKenzie) Bathgate of 10 Alexander Street, Tranent.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1916 and buried in London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, France.


BELL, PETER
Peter Bell – age 38 – Private (41027) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter was a coal miner when he enlisted.
Born 1879 in Slamannan, Stirlingshire. Son of James and Elizabeth (Beattie) Bell. Husband of Elizabeth (Lamb) Bell who he married in December 1906 in Tranent. (from 1919 Mrs Charles Bathgate of Tranent).
Missing in Action on 24 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

BLADES, JAMES
James Dickson Blades – age 42 – Sapper (156421) 184th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.
James was a coal miner when he enlisted as Private (16234) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in October 1914. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in August 1915 and was transferred to the RE in April 1916. James died from natural causes – bronchitis.
Born 1874 in Lasswade, Midlothian. Son of the late Agnes (Dickson) Blades (died 1888 in Tranent) and of the late Andrew Blades (died 1905 in Tranent)
Husband of Agnes (McGuire) Blades of Kirkcaldy, Fife who he married in 1898 in Auchterderran, Fife.
Died on Active Service on 25 March 1917 and buried in Molliens-Au-Bois Communal Cemetery, France.


BRADLEY, JAMES
James Bradley – age 23 – Private (1879) 1/8th Battalion attached to the 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a china merchant living at Elder Street, Tranent when he enlisted in December 1915. He landed in France in July 1916 and was posted to the 12th Royal Scots but he was killed just over a month later.
Born 1893 in Tranent. Son of Edward and Mary (Boholy) Bradley of 54 Elder Street, Tranent.
Killed in Action on 19 August 1916 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.


BROWN, JOSEPH
Joseph Brown – age 32 – Private (13188) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Joseph was a coal miner when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1883 in Roslin, Lasswade, Midlothian. Son of the late Joseph Brown (died 1909) and of Mary (Morrison) Brown of Winston Place, Tranent.
Missing in Action on 2 November 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


BRUCE, WILLIAM
William Bruce – age 25 – Sapper (79663) 173rd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.
William enlisted as Private (4693) and he landed with the 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots at Le Havre in November 1914. At some point in 1915 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers and had been on leave but on his return to France he was involved in a motor accident and in November 1915 he was being evacuated home on the Hospital Ship “Anglia” when she struck a mine off Folkestone and sank in fifteen minutes.
Born 1890 in Loanhead, Lasswade, Midlothian. Son of Henry and Elizabeth (Ballantyne) Bruce of Wellwynd, Tranent.
Died on Service/ Lost at Sea on 17 November 1915 and named on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.
