Located on the Esplanade near the Pier, it is known locally as "The Angel".

This is looking toward the bay.

These are the panels with the names in alphabetical order by year.

And the scene at it's dedication.

The sculptor Charles Pilkington Jackson's business papers are lodged at the National Library in Edinburgh, Accession 7445. Some of his correspondance over the Rothesay memorial can be found in Box 2, File 75. According to the letters the pedestal is of grey Aberdeen granite. An open competition was held for the design of the memorial and the assesor was the Glasgow architect Mr. John Keppie A.R.S.A. According to one letter dated 28/6/1921 Jackson was initially awarded second place in the competition for his statue of Saint Columba holding a celtic cross aloft. If this had been selected I think it would have been the only Scottish war memorial to feature a full scale statue of the original patron saint. Presumably first place was taken by Messers. Charles E. Tweedie of Edinburgh who must then have given Jackson the commission for their own design. In a press release prepared by Jackson he describes the figure of the angel as representing 'Sacrifice'.

I also took some notes from a small booklet 'Burgh of Rothesay and Island of Bute War Memorial, 1914 - 1919' which is in the town library:

'Immediately on declaration of war the reserves and territorials mobilised and on Wednesday 12th August 1914 300 men, 130 horses, 4 guns, waggons and ammunition of the Bute Battery sailed for Greenock for training in Inverness...
On 9th October the first wounded returned to Mount Stuart which the Marquess of Bute gave up for a hospital...
On 21st October 1914 Corporal Donald MacLean became the first Bute man to fall...
In 1917 Bute lost 109 men, the largest toll in any one year...
In 1919 there were fourteen further deaths, mostly due to illness...
Over 300 Bute men died by the end of WWI.

I think my my great uncle may be one of the names on the Memorial by the ferry terminal. He is James Gemmill, Merchant Marine, died 1918. I was hoping someone could point me to some records which could give me some information about him, how and where he died etc. I visited Rothesay last year and got a lot of detail about my grandfather and their home but nothing on his brother James. The museum curator was on holiday and the stand-in not very knowledgable. I will visit again next summer. I have tried numerous web sites to no avail and will visit the Mitchell Library at some stage.

Here's hoping

Tom,
Drop in at the Rothesay Library. They have a good deal of local information in printed form, but they also have the old newspapers on microfilm. What a treasure they are! They also have the censuses and probably some information I'm unaware of. Email them to let them know you're coming and find out more about what they hold. The Bute Sons & Daughters are quite helpful as well. They are online.

Thanks Mike, I will go to the museum again next time I go to Scotland. I have just spoken to my mum about this and she said that when her uncle James (the one on the memorial, we think?) was a kid, he saved another child from drowning and was presented with a bravery medal which is in the Rothesay museum. All heresay I must add, so I will have to visit now won't I?

Thank-you for this chain of letters. I always wanted to know about my Grandad's brother from Rothesay who was killed in the First World War - well, thanks to your Memorial, I can see William Dawson (on the 1917 face) - and yes, he was in the Gordons.

I also found his grave at:

http://www.cwgc.org/search/certificate.aspx?casualty=283915

Thankyou to you people who publish this sort of information.

Best wishes,
Brian Dawson (Sydney)

Brian

Great to know people like you are finding the project useful. If you have any information about your grandfather i.e. date of birth, parents, family etc which you could add here that would be great.

Thanks

Adam

Thanks Adam - yes, I'm now receiving more information from the researchers at the Gordons Museum and they are sending me the War Diary page copies that recorded events in early April 1917 when my grand-uncle was K-in-A. I'm also looking forward to the 1911 Scottish Census being published so I can find out his last address. His 1901 address was 3 Logie Place, Rothesay - so I'll find out (after 27 March 2011) if the family were still there in 1911.

Although there is no obvious connection to Rothesay, this man's mother lived in Criagmore just outside Rothesay in 1917

PLANCK ANDREW W. ROYAL ARTILLERY SERGEANT

He is Planck on the memorial but on the war return, CWGC & SNWM he is recorded as Plank.

A wee bit of research shows Andrew was born Andrew Williamson Plank in 1912 in Rothesay, his parents however were married as Mr & Mrs Planck in 1905 in but were recorded as Plank in the 1911 census, from then on the name stays as Plank.

Andrews' grandfather was a merchant Seaman called John Planck. I think he was the first of his family in Scotland as his parents don't appear on the census. They were called Jacob Planck (a farmer) and Sophia Didish.

So it's odd that he is remembered on the memorial with his parents original Germanic surname he was not born with.
