Sad to see that this memorial has been vandalised by graffitti (2 or 3 May). Thanks Ken for the tipoff. I met today with reporters from the local paper and the local councillor. There should be a newspaper article to follow. The reporter will make sure the council are on the case first thing tomorrow to get it sorted. The council's war memorials officer is aware that this will probably qualify for a 75% grant towards the costs.

BBC local radio item about the vandalism, including interview with me. No longer online so I have put it on youtube at http://youtu.be/JfBK2WHaXY4

Great coverage on Border TV news at http://www.itv.com/news/border/story/2013-05-08/war-memorial-defaced/. I will put this on youtube and update this post with the link over the next few days.

printed press stuff to come. trying to use this as an opportunity to raise awareness of war memorials, it's an ill wind.........and all that, just hate that I have to be in front of the camera and on mike to do it.

Whilst I too abhor the vandalism of the memorial, I am not convinced that we should use the images and detail on the thread for all to see in the future on examining the details of the memorial and those recorded upon it.
Could / should this not just be added to the " news " item rather than the memorial thread?

I don't think so. It is part of the history of this memorial now and I think it should be recorded here for all to see.

Had he damage been of a serious nature I could agree, but expect the council have removed the paint by now.

Nope, removal of paint from stone can be complex, use of solvents can drive pigment into the stone - even granite so a poultice may need to be applied and this could take several days. I know the local council are seeking specific advice how this particular type of paint is best removed from this material.

Thanks for the update Paul. Now I can stop being "Sad", "Saddened" and any other variation of the emotion that the reporter managed to contrive for his article. Very Happy
