Saw this post on GWF and thought that it might be useful if one of us had a copy. There are a few of these in Scotland I think.

"In last nights Sheffield Star there was a piece about a register of all 300+ Royal Mail memorials being published.
Complied by the British Postal Museum and archive.
No details of where to view or buy such register though!
Dean."

Wow indeed!

Here's one I've wanted to see, but have had problems with access since it's now in the sorting office:

Here's a tip:

When searching, leave the initial field blank. That'll bring up the full listing.

Oh, and if you complete the survey (and enter the prize draw) where it asks you how you navigated to their site, put "other" and then specify it was a post on www.scottishwarmemorials.co.uk

I never miss a chance for a plug...

I'll have to have a good look later, it looks like an excellent resource.

I have now moved this to the Links section.

Great site, I would take issue with them on one important point, I don't think they are second only to the Church of England on the number of war memorials. I have no idea how many the Church of Scotland have but it must be well over the 345 that Royal Mail has. Over 1000 would be my guess.

Inverness has quite a memorial!

Inverness

There is no photograph of the only memorial in Edinburgh.

The Boer War scrolls which were at West Port in Edinburgh (building now demolished) are now in the Post Office archives.

Not half - would be good to get that one on the site and find out the thinking behind the design etc.

I have a friend who will try to get photos of the memorial in Greenock.

How many of these post office memorials do we actually have already?

I didn't get that tip of yours to work David. Can you get a list of Scottish memorials extracted from it and posted here? I was just putting random Scottish towns into it.

Do we need to get someone to visit? Could we ask the Royal Mail for permission to use their photographs?

The tip I gave only gives you the list of ALL the memorials. 14 pages in total. It's fairly easy to pick out the Scottish ones from there.

someone seems to have taken them to task on my previous point, their site used to read second to the church of England, it now reads second to the church!

I've just emailed them.

Ah, my mistake. The error is still there on their announcement page, but is amended on the actual database welcome page.

Some of the Scottish ones do not have images, whilst others with photos are out of focus and the names cannot be read. There are two or three that have been deposited at the British Postal Museum.
