Named on the St. Boswells Parish War Memorial as:

A.F. WATSON, BSc, 2nd Lt. R. Hrs.
Alastair Fisher Watson – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Alastair was educated at Kelso High School and at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of Science at Edinburgh University in 1910. He studied at the East of Scotland Agricultural College. He had served in the Officer Training Corps in both the College and the University. He graduated in 1914 and enlisted as Private (1429) in the 1/1st Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry, landing with his squadron at Le Havre in September 1915. He was commissioned in the Black Watch in June 1916 but was wounded on the Somme in August and evacuated home. Alastair returned to France in January 1917.
Born 1892 in Renton, Dunbartonshire as Alexander Fisher Watson.
Son of The Rev. Alexander Cameron Watson and Elizabeth R. S. (Fisher) Watson of The Manse, St. Boswells.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Guemappe British Cemetery, Wancourt, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Kelso War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

MAJOR JAMES D. L. MELROSE.
James Douglas Leitch Melrose – age 33 – Major, 29th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
James was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1904. He graduated in 1908 and was appointed a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh in 1909. He was commissioned in the Territorial Forth Companies of the RGA in Edinburgh in April 1913 and was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1914. He was promoted to Captain in June 1916 and went to France in August. James was promoted to Major commanding a Battery in March 1917 but was fatally wounded the following year at Kemmell Hill and died at Boeschepe near Ypres. He was buried in the Churchyard there and was re-interred at Abeele in 1921
Born 1884 in Kelso. Son of the late Margaret (Harvey) Melrose (died 1891) and of former Provost James Melrose of Goshen Bank, Kelso. Husband of Jessie Macpherson (Jenkinson) Melrose of 13 Rutland Street, and of 5 Dean Terrace, Edinburgh who he married in 1916 in Newington, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1918. and buried in Abeele Aerodrome Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial, on the George Watson's College memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen and on the University Old College memorial.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

HUGGAN, J. L. LIEUT. R. A. M. C.
James Laidlaw Huggan – age 25 – Lieutenant, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
James was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1896 and at Darlington Grammar School in County Durham before becoming a Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University in 1905. He graduated M.B. & Ch.B. in 1911 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the RAMC in July 1912. He played rugby for the university, for London Scottish and once, in March 1914, for Scotland.
James landed at Le Havre with the 3rd Coldstream Guards on 13 August 1914 but was killed a month later during the battle of the Aisne. He was buried near Soupir but his grave was lost.
Born 1888 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Robert Huggan (died.1892) of Jedburgh and of Isabella Broomfield (Laidlaw) Huggan of Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial, on the Darlington Grammar School memorial, on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University, on the University's Roll of the Fallen, and on the Scottish Rugby Union memorial at Murrayfield, Edinburgh.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial as:

Edward Greaves MacDougall – age 38 – Captain, 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Edward was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before joining the Glasgow office of the Scottish Provident Institution where he became an inspector of agencies throughout the West of Scotland. He was living at 26 Windsor Terrace, Kelvinside in Glasgow when, at the outbreak of war, he enlisted as Lance Corporal (2901) in the 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry but he was commissioned as a temporary Captain in the 8th (Reserve) Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in January 1915. He landed with the 6th Battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1877 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Margaret (Allan) McDougall (died 1888) and of the late Provost John McDougall (died 1915) of Boundary Bank, Jedburgh. He named his sister Ella McDougall of The Nest, Jedburgh as his legatee.
Missing in Action between 26 and 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on an individual memorial in Jedburgh Parish Church and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Donald was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University before he gained a position with the Bank of Montreal in Canada and by 1911 he was employed in the Saskatoon branch in Saskatchewan. He returned to the UK in March 1916 and enlisted in the 2/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots, serving as Lance Corporal (4765 and 351696) before he was commissioned in the Gordon Highlanders in May 1917. He joined his battalion in France that year.
Born 1891 at Denholm in Cavers, Roxburghshire. Son of Donald MacGregor, M.D., M.A., and of Jessie Hamilton (Mundell) MacGregor of D'Abbies Tower, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 23 August 1918 and buried in Railway Cutting Cemetery, Courcelles-Le-Comte, France.
Also named on the Bank of Montreal Roll of Honour and on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

YOUNG, A. G. L. C. R. SCOTS.
Andrew George Young – age 23 – Lance Corporal (271505) 15th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew was educated at Jedburgh Grammar School and at George Watson's College in 1909/10. He had joined the family boot and shoe business of Young and Co. in Eastgate, Peebles and had also worked in the trade in Edinburgh before he enlisted as Private (2149) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry in March 1915. He became a Brigade signaller, and. before going to France in April 1918, he was a dispatch rider and motor-cyclist with the Brigade Signal Section on the East Coast at Dunbar. Andrew was wounded by a bomb during an enemy air raid and died in the 5th General Hospital at Etaples two days later.
Born 1894 in Jedburgh. Son of ex-Provost Alexander Scott Young (died 1918) and of Catherine (Paxton) Young of Friars Cottage, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 21 May 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Peebles War Memorial and in the Book of Remembrance for Tweeddale. (Thanks Mike!)

Named on the WW2 panel of the Jedburgh War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

STEWART, GEORGE R. FL. SGT. R. A. F. V. R.
George Ronald Stewart – age 23 – Flight Sergeant (1365996) 625 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
George was educated at Jedburgh Grammar School and from 1937 at George Watson's College in Edinburgh. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and was trained in navigation in Canada, the USA and in South Africa. His Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Kelstern in Lincolnshire for a raid on Stuttgart but the aircraft crashed off the French Coast.
Born 1921 in Jedburgh. Son of George and Eliza Grange (Easton) Stewart of Valleyview, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 13 March 1944 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

Named on the Melrose War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

GUNNER W.J. LOWE.
William James Lowe – age 20 – Gunner (1294) 15th Battery, Machine Gun Corps (Motors)
William was educated at Galashiels Academy, at George Watson's College in Edinburgh and he studied electrical engineering at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow (now the University of Strathclyde). He enlisted in May 1915, together with his brother Ion Alexander Lowe (1295) who had returned from Canada, and they landed in France as part of the 18th Division in July 1915. William was wounded at Nueve Chapelle and the brothers were both wounded at Levantie when a shell hit their dug-out. Ion survived but William died of his wounds.
Born 1896 in Morningside, Newington, Edinburgh. Son of James Robert and Agnes Straiton (Hall) Lowe of Ashville, Tweedmount Road, Melrose.
Died of Wounds on 22 December 1916 and buried in Pont-Du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, France.
Also named on the Royal Technical College Roll of Honour.

Ion Alexander Lowe, Gunner (1295) was born in 1892 in Peebles, Selkirkshire. He enlisted in May 1915, was discharged from the army in January 1918 due to illness and was awarded a Silver War Badge (302421)
