William Murray – age 22 – Private (17957) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman on the family farm at Tarrasfoot before enlisting. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in June 1915 but was evacuated to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in Edinburgh where he died of tuberculosis in the Flora Stevenson's in Craigleith.
Born 1894 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Beattie) Murray of Tarrasfoot, Langholm/Canonbie.
Died on Service on 23 June 1916.
Commonwealth War Grave – Canonbie Parish Churchyard.

Christopher Armstrong – age 31 – Private (23288) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Chris was the School Board Officer for Canonbie when he enlisted and had been with his battalion for seven weeks when he was killed.
Born 1885 in Canonbie. Son of the late George Armstrong (died 1908) and of Mary Jane (Steele) Armstrong (died 1913) of Loaninghead, Canonbie. He named his sisters Jeannie, Mary, and Margaret Adamson as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 31 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Born 1886 in Canonbie. Son of the late George Armstrong (died 1908) and of Mary Jane (Steel) Armstrong (died 1913) of Loaninghead, Canonbie. He named his sister Margaret Adamson as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 25 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hexham War Memorial.

George Armstrong – age 19 – Private (36901) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George died of diphtheria in the 6th Stationary Hospital in Frevent, near Arras.
Born 1898 in Canonbie. Son of John and Margaret (Davidson) Armstrong of Roadend, Canonbie.
Died on Active Service on 7 April 1918 and buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery Extension, Frevent, France.

L/CPL. WALTER ARMSTRONG, GORDON HIGHLANDERS.
Walter Armstrong – age 32 – Private (S/13158) 8th/10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Walter was brought up by his grandparents Walter and Isabella Armstrong in Canonbie but he enlisted at Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland and he named his uncle Andrew as his legatee.
Born 1884 at Knittyholm, Burnfoot, Canonbie. Son of Isabella Armstrong and of John Smith.
In 1871 at Knittyholm, Canonbie were Walter Armstrong 54, his wife Isabella 44, and children Nancy 14, Andrew 9, Isabella 6, and Mary Ina 4.
In 1881 at Knittyholm were Walter 66, Isabella 55, Agnes Jane 23, Andrew 19, Mary Ima 13 and Christina 5.
In 1891 and 1901 Walter, aged 6 and 17, was living with his grandmother in Canonbie but by 1911 he was a railwayman, lodging at Engine Street, Bathgate, Linlithgowshire.
His uncle Andrew had married and was a railwayman in Northumberland in 1891,1901&1911. Latterly he was at 169 Mount Pleasant, Throckley, Newburn.
Missing in Action on 24 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Throckley War Memorial in Northumberland.


PTE. W. J. ARMSTRONG, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
William James Armstrong – age 24 – Private (32908) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was a grocer living at 2 Cloverfoot Cottages, Niddrie Mill, Portobello when he enlisted in Edinburgh in December 1915. He was mobilised in February 1916 and landed in France in November where he joined his battalion in December. William was accidentally wounded in June 1918 and rejoined his battalion in August but was killed a few days later.
Born 1893 at Greenburn, Canonbie. Son of the late Martha Armstrong and of Peter Dunn. Brother of Miss Elizabeth Jane Armstrong of Greenburn, Canonbie and of 2 Cloverfoot Cottages, Portobello, Midlothian. Grandson of the late James and Elizabeth (Calvert) Armstrong of Greenburn, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 2 September 1918 and named on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.

PTE. JOHN BEATTIE, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
John Beattie – age 23 – Private (24053) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was a woodman at Whiteknowe, Canonbie when he enlisted as Private (23165) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1916. He was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June but six weeks later he was killed on the Somme.
Born 1893 in Canonbie. Son of John and Mary Beattie of Knittyholme, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES BELL, K.O.S.B.
James Bell – age 35 – Private (27116) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 James, aged 18, was a pit-pony driver in Canonbie. He died in the 1st South African Field Ambulance at St. Laurent Blangy near Arras but he was re-interred at Souchez after the war.
Born 1882 in Canonbie. Son of the late Adam Bell (died 1900) and of Ann (Little) Bell of Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.


L/CPL. RICHARD BYERS K.O.S.B.
Richard Byers – age 20 – Lance Corporal (23835) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was employed on agricultural work near Langholm when he enlisted. He was serving in the battalion's machine-gun section when he was killed.
Born 1896 in Canonbie. Son of James and Mary Jane (Thomson) Byers of Rowanburnfoot and of Howgillcleuch, Canonbie and later as Mary Jane (Thomson) Byers of Springfield, Gretna, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 8 June 1917 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.


PTE. JAMES CALVERT, K.O.S.B.
James Calvert – age 21 – Private (1338) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
James was a miner at the Duke of Buccleuch's Colliery in Canonbie when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Canonbie. Son of James Calvert and of Euphemia Turnbull (Common) Calvert of 5 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

James Conacher – age 30 – Sergeant (S/6909) 1/4th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was brought up in Castleton, Roxburghshire where his father was a gamekeeper. He enlisted at Grays in Essex and joined the 8th Black Watch in France in May 1915.
Born 1885 in Kiltearn, Rossshire. Son of Mungo and Helen (Keir) Conacher, of Evertown, Canonbie
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Liddlesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.

William James Cowan – age 24 – Private (12798) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William was resident in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in Galashiels. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1893 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Mary (Little) Cowan of Caulside, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 10 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton and on the Teviothead Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire.

Charles Gordon Craigie – age 26 – Lance Corporal (17426) 11th (Lonsdale) Battalion, Border Regiment.
Charles was a coal miner in Canonbie when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915 but was killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1889 in Gateshead, County Durham. Son of the late John Craigie and of Elizabeth (Dickson) Craigie of Whinbush Cottage, Canonbie. Husband of Henrietta Irving (Beattie) Craigie of Erinlea Cottages and of 35 Rowanburn, Canonbie who he married in August 1914.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1916 and buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, Somme, France.

PTE. CHAS. J. DAVIDSON, CANADIANS.
Charles James Davidson – age 32 – Private (204018) 6th Company, Canadian Machine Gun Corps.
Charles was farming south west of Kerrobert, Saskatchewan before enlisting in the 96th Battalion at Saskatoon late in December 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in September 1916 and was transferred to the CMGC in England in October, joining his company in France in November 1916. Charles was evacuated to the 7th Canadian General Hospital at Le Treport in March 1918 but died from acute myelitis a week later.
Born 1885 in Canonbie. Son of the late Robert Davidson (died 1916) of Byreburnfoot, Canonbie and of Mary Jane (Armstrong) Davidson who died in Canada in 1931.
Died on Active Service on 12 March 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. DAVID DINWOODIE, LOYAL NORTH LANCS.
David Dinwoodie – age 30 – Private (28074) 1/4th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
David was a ploughman at Rowanburn, Canonbie when he enlisted as Private (34348) in the Border Regiment in May 1916. He was mobilised in May 1917 and was posted to the 1st Battalion in France in September but was transferred to the LNL. David was a Lewis Gunner when he was killed two months later.
Born 1887 in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late James and Isabella (Harkness) Dinwoodie of Broadbeck, Waterbeck, Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Euphemia (Cowan) Dinwoodie of 30 Rowanburn, Canonbie who he married in 1915 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 18 November 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial.


PTE. WALTER DOUGLAS, SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Walter Douglas – age 38 – Private (43126) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Walter enlisted as Private (19897) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers and joined the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915. He then served in Egypt before the battalion moved to France in March 1916 where he was transferred to the Cameronians.
Born 1878 in Canonbie. Son of Walter and Mary (Davidson) Douglas of 26 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 27 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

PTE. G. B. A. ELLIOT, MACHINE GUN CORPS.
George Bell Anderson Elliot – age 19 – Private (158842) 56th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
George enlisted as Private (29214) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but transferred to the MGC before he went to France. He had been at the front for just six weeks when he was killed.
Born 1899 in Canonbie. Son of the late Thomas Elliot and of Isabella (Armstrong) Elliot (from 1918 Mrs. William Wallace) of Hollows, Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Chapel Corner Cemetery, Sauchy-Lestree, France.


PTE. JAS. GLENDINNING, KING'S OWN ROYAL LANCASTER REGT.
James Glendinning – age 18 – Private (21135) 11th Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment)
James was a farm labourer and living with his parents at Bogrie Cottage, Canonbie when he enlisted in October 1915. He claimed to be 19 years old but was just 5 foot tall and he was posted to the 11th King's Own which was a “Bantam” battalion. He landed in France with his battalion in June 1916 but was killed three months later.
Born 1897 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of George and Isabella (Lawson) Glendinning of Scotland Gate, Sark Tower, Canonbie.
His sister Margaret Murray Glendinning of 3 Scotland Gate was named as his next of kin.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1916 and buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France.


PTE. A. K. GRAHAM, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Graham – age 25 – Private (12486) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander Kay Graham had been brought up in Carlisle and in Longtown in Cumberland but was living with his family in Canonbie by 1911 where he was a miner when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Carlisle. Son of John Kay Graham and Elizabeth (Glendinning) Graham of 60 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. ISAAC GRAHAM, AUSTRALIANS.
Isaac Graham – age 29 – Private (2158) 5th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Isaac was a labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne, Victoria in March 1915. He sailed from Sydney in June and joined his battalion at Gallipoli in August but three weeks later he was wounded and evacuated to the 18th Stationary Hospital at Mudros before being sent to the King George Hospital in London in September 1915. He rejoined his battalion, now in France, in January 1917 but was wounded a month later and died in the 1/1st South Midland Casualty Clearing Station at Dernancourt.
Born 1888 in Canonbie. Son of William and Ellen (Scott) Graham of Forge House, Canonbie.
Died of Wounds on 14 February 1917 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.


PTE. RICHD. GRAHAM, BORDER REGT.
Richard James Graham – age 20 – Private (17598) 11th Battalion (Lonsdale) Border Regiment.
Richard landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1895 in Canonbie. Son of the late James Graham (died 1907) and of the late Jane (Bell) Graham (died 1914) of Saughtrees, Canonbie. His sister Mrs Mary (Graham) Robley was named as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 9 July 1916 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES GRIEVE, AUSTRALIANS.
James Grieve – age 40 – Private (6771) 16th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
James was a farm hand at Goomalling, Western Australia when he enlisted in Perth in June 1916. He sailed from Freemantle in November 1916 and joined his battalion in France in June 1917 but was killed two months later.
Born 1876 in Canonbie. Son of the late Jessie (Elliot) Grieve of Albierigg, Canonbie (died 1915) and of Archibald Grieve of Under Millsteads, Canonbie. Husband of Agnes (Corrie) Grieve of Deakin Street, West Guildford, Western Australia who he married in 1904 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
In 1911 Agnes aged 27 and her three children Archibald 6, Nellie 4, and Esther 2, were living with her parents John and Ann Corrie in Caroline Street, Langholm. They, plus John aged 3, returned from Australia in September 1919 and, from 1922, were at 19 Union Street, Brechin, Forfarshire.
Missing in Action on 21 August 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. WALTER HOGG, K.O.S.B.
Walter Hogg – age 23 – Private (240538) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was a miner at Gateside Colliery, Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. As Private (1948) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June1915 and later he served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza on 19 April 1917. Walter was evacuated to Egypt but died a week later in hospital in Kantara.
Born 1894 in Canonbie. Son of the late William and Sarah (Little) Hogg of Canonbie. Nephew of James and Christina Hogg of 9 Crawick Viaduct, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.
Died of Wounds on 26 April 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery. Egypt.
Also named on the Sanquhar War Memorial, on the Sanquhar School memorial and on the Kirkconnel Parish Church memorial.


SEC. LIEUT. SAM. W. HOUNAM, BLACK WATCH.

Samuel Wolves Hounam – age 22 – Second Lieutenant: 11th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Samuel was born at Gilnockie Schoolhouse in Canonbie where his father was the teacher. He went on to Dumfries Academy and then to Edinburgh University as a student of the Arts 1914-1915. He was a member of the OTC and was commissioned in the Black Watch in April 1915. Samuel was discharged due to illness in November 1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge No.2530. Samuel died of a brain tumour at his mother's family home in Kildonnan, Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire. He was described as a medical student.
Born 1896 in Cannonbie. Son of John Hounam and of the late Marion (McGill) Hounam.
Died on 2 June 1918 and buried in Kirkmadrine cemetery, Stoneykirk.
Also named on the Stoneykirk War Memorials, on the Dumfries Academy memorial and on the memorial from the former Gilnockie School.


SIG. SAMUEL IRVING, K.O.S.B.
Samuel Irving – age 21 – Private (25368) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1896 in Canonbie. Son of George Irving and Margaret Geddes (Bell) Irving of Glenzierhead, Canonbie.
Died of Wounds on 8 November 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.

John William Jackson – age 27 – Sergeant (83) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John worked underground as a fireman at Fauldhead Colliery, Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was wounded in July but later he contracted pneumonia and he died in hospital in Mudros on the island of Lemnos.
Born 1886 in Canonbie. Son of the late John Jackson (died 1900) and of Jane (Calvert) Jackson of Rowanburn, Canonbie. Brother of James Jackson, formerly manager at Gateside Colliery in Kirkconnel.
Died on Active Service on 26 December 1915 and buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Kirkconnel War Memorial and on the Kirkconnel Parish Church WW1 memorial.

Walter Jackson – age 21 – Lance Corporal (24994) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was initially posted to the 7th/8th KOSB before joining the 6th KOSB.
Born 1897 Kirkandrew, Longtown, Cumberland. Son of Robert and Mary (Graham) Jackson of Hawknestrigg, Canonbie.
In 1911 the family were living in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

George was posted as Gunner (159527) to the Royal Field Artillery in France but was transferred to the RGA.
Born 1895 in Canonbie. Son of Andrew and Wilhelmina Thomson (Jackson) Jardine of Boughlin, Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 5 October 1917 and buried in The Huts Cemetery, Belgium.

SEC. LIEUT. JOHN JARVIE, K.O.S.B.
John Jarvie – age 30 – Second Lieutenant, 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was headmaster at Glenzier School, Canonbie when he enlisted as Sergeant (21287) in the 13th Royal Scots in early 1915. He landed with his battalion in France in July 1915 and was promoted to Company Sergeant Major before he was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1916.
He began his teaching career in Kilsyth Academy in Stirlingshire and then moved to Bank School in New Cumnock, Ayrshire before coming to Canonbie in September 1913. John died of multiple wounds in the 12th Stationary Hospital at St. Pol.
Born 1886 in Bainsford, Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Son of Archibald and Agnes Brechin (Myles) Jarvie of Craigmarloch, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire. Husband of Jessie Foster (Gillespie) Jarvie of Ingleston, New Cumnock, Ayrshire who he married in 1913 in New Cumnock.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1917 and buried in St. Pol Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Kilsyth Burgh War Memorial, on the near-by Banton Village War Memorial, on the Bank School memorial in New Cumnock and on an individual memorial formerly in Glenzier School in Canonbie.


LIEUT. COL. H. J. JOHNSTON, D.S.O. DUKE OF WELLINGTON'S (WEST RIDING REGT)
Horace James Johnston, Distinguished Service Order – age 49 – Colonel, 8th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
Johnston was the tenant of Watch Hill House, Canonbie in 1915. He had served with the WRR for many years and was a Major when he was awarded the DSO in 1902 for his service with the 3rd Battalion in South Africa. He commanded the battalion from 1904 until 1910. He came out of retirement to command the 8th Battalion in January 1915 and landed with them near Lala Baba at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli in August 1915 but he was killed within days. There is some doubt regarding the actual date of his death (7 to 11 August) His remains were recovered from the battlefield and interred in Hill 10 after the war.
Born 1866 in Brighton Sussex. Son of the late Francis John and Caroline (Earle) Johnston of Dunsdale, Westerham, Kent. Husband of Florence Hope (Browne-Clayton) Johnston, of "Lamas," Wimbledon Common, London who he married in 1904 at Browne Hill in Carlow, Ireland.
Killed in Action on 7 August 1915 and buried in Hill 10 Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Peter Keen – age 27 – Corporal (17930) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Peter was a miner when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915.
Born 1889 in Hallgreen, Canonbie. Son of William and Jane Ann (Johnston) Keen of 7 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Died of Wounds on 11 September 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.


L/CPL JAMES LAW, K.O.S.B.
James Law – age 20 – Lance Corporal (23606) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB when he enlisted but was transferred to the 1st Battallion.
Born 1897 in Canonbie as George James Law. Son of George and Jessie (Mundell) Law of Hollows, Canonbie.
Died of Wounds on 16 August 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. DAVID LISTER, K.O.S.B.
David Lister – age 19 – Private (1898) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was brought up in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire and was a ploughman at Wamphray, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but died of heart failure in his dug-out.
Born 1896 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Janet Lister of Grahamshill Farm and of Cranberry Farm, Kirkpatrick Fleming and of Mouldyhills, Canonbie.
Died on Active Service on 5 September 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish War Memorial.

Stewart was a farm servant at Middlebie, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. He joined the 7th RSF in France in August 1915 and also served with the 1st Battalion before he moved to the 2nd RSF. He was Mentioned in Despatches as Lister, No.16968 Pte. (actg. Lce.-Corpl.) S.
Born 1894 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Janet Lister of Grahamshill Farm and of Cranberry Farm, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire and of Mouldyhills, Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1918 and buried in Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie, France.
Also named on the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JOHN MALCOLM, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
John Malcolm – age 19 – Private (48077) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John enlisted in September 1917 and went to France in April 1918. He was fatally wounded four months later and died in the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station in Frevent.
Born 1899 in Dumfries. Son of Mary Oliver Malcolm of Auchenrivock, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, and the late William Malcolm.
Died of Wounds on 23 August 1918 and buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery Extension, Frevent, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Burgh War Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. WM. MURRAY, K.O.S.B

William Murray – age 22 – Private (17957) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman on the family farm at Tarrasfoot before enlisting. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in June 1915 but was evacuated to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in Edinburgh where he died of tuberculosis in the Flora Stevenson's in Craigleith.
Born 1894 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Beattie) Murray of Tarrasfoot, Langholm/Canonbie.
Died on Service on 23 June 1916 and buried in Canonbie Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Chalmers Church memorial in Langholm.

PTE. JOHN McGLASSON, K.O.S.B.
John McGlasson – age 20 – Private (1566) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a miner at the Duke of Buccleuch's Colliery in Canonbie when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah in July. John was killed during the final action before the withdrawal from the peninsula.
Born 1895 in Canonbie. Son of Jemina McGlasson of 37 Rowanburn, Canonbie.
Killed in Action on 30 December 1915 and buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. MURDOCH McLEAN, BORDER REGT.
Note: Both CWGC and SDGW show his first name as Mudock. Civil records have Murdoch and other military records have Murdock.
Mudock McLean – age 20– Private (17452) 11th Battalion, (Lonsdale) Border Regiment.
Murdoch was living at Harelaw Cottages, Canonbie and was employed at the Duke of Buccleuch's lime quarries when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915 but was killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1896 in Belgrave Street, Kelvinside, Glasgow as Murdoch. Son of Hector and Catherine (McLeod) McLean who had married in 1892 in Edinburgh.
His father Hector and his sisters Margaret, Sarah and Mary were named as his legatees and in 1901 Catherine Mclean 28, Margaret 6, Murdoch 4, Sarah 3 and Hectorina Mary Mclean 4 months were in Leith.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. JOHN G. McROBERTS, ROYAL SCOTS.
Note: all records show the family name as McRobert.
John Glendinning McRobert – age 19 – Private (376014) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was serving his apprenticeship with Mr. W.S. Malcolm in Langholm when he enlisted.
Born 1897 in Canonbie as John Glendinning. Son of Maggie (Glendinning) McRobert and step-son of John McRobert of Evertown, Canonbie who married in 1900 in Canonbie.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
