Struan War Memorial

The Memorial is the newest of all the War Memorials in Skye and Lochalsh in that it was erected in 1987 by the Local Community Council in the Struan area , as a Memorial to the Local Men who had died in the two Great Wars of the 20th Century . The Memorial is constructed of polished granite wiht white etched letters .

This Memorial is situated in Struan on the grassed area in the centre of the village just off the Sligachan to Dunvegan Road , the A 863

.

Extracted from the the CWGC October Newsletter
"Villagers from Struan on the Isle of Skye have recently finished renovating their local war memorial.
Large numbers of highland and island communities were devastated as a result of the First and Second World Wars, particularly during the Great War, as the strong tradition of military service amongst Scots left many towns and villages with few adult males. Many of those who travelled overseas never returned.
The Struan War Memorial lists 14 casualties and with assistance from the Commission and information from our website, certificates for each of the men killed were reproduced, with a picture of the cemetery or memorial at which each of the men is commemorated sitting alongside biographical details.
At a recent service of rededication, the oldest resident in our community, Mrs Flora Anne Beaton, unveiled the renovated memorial. Mrs Beaton knew all the families on the memorial and knew personally many of the casualties. The Portree High School Pipe Band played "The Battle of the Somme” at the service."
