Not listed on UKNIWM

OS Map Ref: NX 148 858

A great memorial for a small village. Unusually you cannot see it from anywhere in the village but it does overlook the bowling green. The base is three cornered with two benches on each side. No inscriptions on the other two sides.

From The Scotsman, Monday 25th September 1922.

    COLMONELL

The memorial which has been erected at Colmonell to commemorate the men belonging to the parish who fell in the Great War was unveiled yesterday by Mrs M'Connel of Knockdolian, in presence of a large number of ex-servicemen and the general public. General Sir Charles Fergusson of Kilkerran delivered the opening address, and Mr R. F. M'Ewen of Barbrochat read the names inscribed on the memorial, which is of handsome design.

Although the WW2 section of the memorial has Flt/Sgt S L POTTS I think this is:

Samuel Hainey Potts, – age 23 – Sergeant/Observer (580464) 49 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Born 1916 in Port William, Mochrum, Wigtownshire. Son of James and Jessie (Hainey) Potts of Colmonell, Ayrshire.
Killed on Active Service on 21 December 1939 and buried in Chevington Cemetery, Northumberland.
Also named on the Mochrum Parish War Memorial in Port William and on a plaque in St. John's Church, Chevington.

Samuel's Hampden bomber took off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire to find and attack the battleship “Deutschland” thought to be operating off the Norwegian coast. The ship was not found and the returning aircraft attempted to land at various airfields along the North Sea coast. Samuel's aircraft crashed near the Fighter Command airfield at RAF Ackington near Chevington in Northumberland and he and and his wireless operator (E.H.Humphry) were killed.
