JACK THOMSON * * Pte. LONdon Irish Rifles.
John Thomson – age 36 – Rifleman (593240) 2/18th Battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles)
Jack was educated at Annan Academy and was living in Paddington in London when he enlisted as Private (5991) in July 1916. He joined his battalion in France in October 1916 but in November the battalion moved to Salonica, landing there in December 1916. In June 1917 they move again, this time to Egypt and then into Palestine where they served at Gaza and Jerusalem. Jack die of multiple gunshot wounds in the 31st General Hospital at Port Said in Egypt.
Born 1881 in Annan. Son of George and Charlesina Lily (Stainthorpe) Thomson of Cove Villa, Hecklegirth, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 30 November 1917 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JOHN THOMPSON * GUNNER, R.H.A.

I cannot trace this man.



ROBT. THOMPSON * L/CORPl. 9th H.L.I.
Robert Thompson – age 23 – Corporal (331251) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was educated at Annan Academy and served his apprenticeship as a draper in his father's business in Annan before securing a position with Messrs Macdonald Ltd. Drapers, in Glasgow. He enlisted there in 1914 but had only been in France for four months when he was wounded on 14 September 1917. He was evacuated to hospital in Poole, Dorset but required another operation and was transferred to the military hospital in the former Mont Dore Hotel in Bournemouth, Hampshire where he died. Born 1894 in Annan. Son of George and Agnes (Latimer) Thompson of 30 Charles Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 24 October 1917 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

ALEx. TWEEDIE * * 2nd LIEUT. 1/5th K.O.S.B.
Alexander Tweedie – age 34 – Second Lieutenant, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was educated at Annan Academy and enlisted as Private (1930) in the 5th KOSB and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant and then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in November 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1882 in Annan. Son of Alexander and Susan Rankin (MacKnight) Tweedie of 43 Lady Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.

CUNNINGHAM B. TWEEDIE, M.C. Capt. 6th K.O.S.B

Cunningham Burnside Tweedie, Military Cross – age 24 – Captain, 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Cunningham was educated at Annan Academy and enlisted as Private (1929) in the 5th KOSB. He was commissioned in March 1915 and went to France in September. He was promoted to Lieutenant and then to Captain during 1916 and was awarded a M.C. in the New Year Honours. He was badly wounded in April 1917 and died a few days later in hospital at Etaples.
Born 1892 in Annan. Son of Alexander and Susan Rankin (MacKnight) Tweedie of 43 Lady Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


GILBERT TWEEDIE * LIEUT. 1st Res. Regt. LANcers.
Gilbert Tweedie – age 41 – Lieutenant, 1st Reserve Cavalry Regiment.
Gilbert was educated at Annan Academy and served his apprenticeship to the law with the Town Clerk in Annan before going to Edinburgh to qualify as a Writer to the Signet. He returned to Annan to practice as a solicitor. He joined the 2/2nd Scottish Horse Yeomanry in August 1914 before he was commissioned from the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps to the King's Own Scottish Borderers in August 1915 and he joined the Reserve Regiment of Cavalry in March 1916. He spent some considerable time in Ireland before being posted to Cupar in Fife. He was reported missing in late March 1918 and a month later his body was found in the River Eden two miles down stream from Cupar.
Born 1876 in Annan. Son of the late Gilbert Tweedie and of Jane (Shortridge) Tweedie, of Annan,
Brother of Thomas Shortridge Tweedie of Trensano, Annan.
Died on Service on 21 April 1918 and buried in Cupar New Cemetery, Fife. (CWG)
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Annan Parish Church memorial.

JOHN VIVERS * * CAPTAIN, 5th R.S.F.
John Vivers – age 25 – Captain, 1/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was educated at Annan Academy, where he was dux in 1904, and at Edinburgh University 1906 to 1910 where he graduated M.A. (Honours, History) He became an English master at Ayr Academy and was living at 23 Fort Street in Ayr when he was commissioned in the 5th RSF in April 1914. John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was promoted to Captain in September but a month later he was killed.
Born 1890 at Millburn Farmhouse in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Mary Vivers of Millburn Farm, Brydekirk and of Manse Crescent, Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 27 October 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Brydekirk Parish War Memorial, on the Brydekirk Parish Church memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen, on the Edinburgh Old College War Memorial, on the Edinburgh Provincial Teacher Training Centre Memorial, on the Ayr Academy War Memorial and on the Ayr Burgh War Memorial.


JAMES WALKER * * Pte. 1st SCOTTISH Rifles.
James Mackay Walker – age 19 – Private (38653) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
James's mother, who had remarried in 1914, was advised that her eldest son Josiah Walker, Gunner (958) RFA had been wounded in Salonica on 20 April 1918 and that her youngest, James, who had been at the front for just six weeks, had been wounded on 14 April. Sadly James had been killed.
Born 1899 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Thomas Walker and of Agnes (Mackay) Walker (later Mrs James Carrick) of Woodcockair Street, Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 14 April 1918 and buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
Also named on the Brydekirk Parish War Memorial, on the Brydekirk Parish Church memorial and on the Annan War Memorial.

Three sons of Charles Watson (solicitor) and of Sarah Elizabeth (Clennel) Watson of Greencroft, Annan. They are all also named on the Annan War Memorial.

KENNETH C. WATSON * Lieut. 10th Loyal N. Lancs. Regt.
Kenneth Clennell Watson – age 22 – Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
Kenneth was educated at Annan Academy and at Warriston College in Moffat, Dumfriesshire before becoming an apprentice engineer at the Cochrane Company factory at Newbie, Annan. He had joined the Territorial 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers and as Private (1465) he was mobilised in August 1914. He was commissioned in September. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1915 and landed with the 10th LNLR at Boulogne. Kenneth was gassed and wounded and was evacuated to hospital in Glasgow in July 1916. He had returned to France only a few weeks before he was killed.
Born 1895 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


PATRICK BALFOUR WATSON Corpl. 51st Can. Regt.
Patrick Balfour Watson – age 26 – Private (437089) 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Patrick was educated at Annan Academy and at Warriston College in Moffat, Dumfriesshire and joined his father's business for three years before emigrating to Canada in 1911. He was working as a clerk for the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan and was a member of the local militia, the Saskatchewan Fusiliers, when he enlisted at Edmonton, Alberta in May 1915. He sailed from Canada with the 51st Battalion in April 1916 and was posted to the 15th Battalion in France but a month later he was killed.
Born 1890 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 June 1916 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the CBC Roll of Honour.


W. G. DOUGLAS WATSON CAPTain, 1/5th K.O.S.B.
William George Douglas Watson – age 36 – Captain, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Annan Academy and at Edinburgh Academy before he became a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1903. He served his apprenticeship and became a solicitor in his father's practice in Annan when he qualified in 1907. He was also joint agent of The Royal Bank of Scotland's branch in the town. He was commissioned in the Territorial 5th KOSB in March 1909 and was mobilised in August 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 where he was promoted to Captain in October. Later he served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1881 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

A. BLAIR WHITE * * 2nd LIEUT. 7/8th K.O.S.B.
Alexander Blair White – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 5th Battalion attached to the 7/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was educated at Annan Academy before he joined the Annan branch of the Bank of Scotland. Later he joined the head office of the London City and Midland Bank and he enlisted from there in 1915 as Rifleman (4707) in the 2/12th Battalion (The Rangers) of the London Regiment. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1917 and was renumbered as Rifleman (417808) In July he was selected for officer training and, after a period as a cadet at Magdelen College in Cambridge, he was commissioned to the 5th KOSB in December 1917. Alexander was posted to the 7/8th Battalion in April 1918 but was killed a few months later at Buzancy.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of Thomas Blair White and Charlotte Alice (Pendleton) White of Northgate, Annan.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial, on the Annan Parish Church memorial and on the London and City Bank Memorial at Canary Wharf, London.
In March 1914 Alexander received the Royal Humane Society's Parchment and a watch from the Carnegie Hero Trust Fund for saving a boy from drowning in the Annan and by a curious coincidence his brother, John Pendleton White, who served with the R.A.M.C. in Mesopotamia, also won the Royal Humane Society’s Parchment for also saving a boy from drowning the Annan in June 1908.


ALBERT G. WILSON * Pte. 4th K.O.S.B.
Albert Goodrich Wilson – age 19 – Private (35240) 4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Albert was educated at Annan Academy and was a fitter at the Cochrane Company Engineering Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in June 1918. He was in training in Fife when he contracted a fever and he was admitted to the East Fife Infectious Diseases Hospital in Dunfermline where he died.
Born 1898 in Annan. Son of the late Stewart and Jeanie or Jane (Caithness) Wilson of Wellington Street, Annan. Brother of Lawrence Wilson 30 Ednam Street, Annan.
Died on Service on 19 August 1918 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


INSEL WOODWARD * Pte. 1st CAN. Mount. Rifls.
Insel Woodward – age 26 – Private (911486) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Insel was educated at Annan Academy and at Skerry's College in Glasgow before he joined the Post Office in July 1909. In 1911 he was a clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank in London and was a boarder at 54 Sterndale Road in Hamersmith. He joined the Canadian Bank of Commerce in February 1912 and was at the branch in Vegreville, Alberta when he enlisted in Edmonton in May 1916. He served at Neuville, St. Vaast, Vimy Ridge, Lens and Amiens.
Born 1893 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Sephton) Woodward of 21 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan.
Killed in Action on 10 August 1918 Bouchoir New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the CBC Roll of Honour.
