Copied from www.1914-18.net brothers who died on the same day

3 June 1916
James, 38, and William Farquhar, 34, died whilst serving with the 10th Battalion Canadian Infantry, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Sons of James and Elizabeth Farquhar of Bower, near Wick. The brothers have no known grave and are commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate Memorial). They are also commemorated on the Bower War Memorial, together with two other of their brothers, Alexander and George, who also made the supreme sacrifice. The local newspaper reported on the death of the fourth brother in 1918 that Mrs Farquhar became overwhelmed with grief and “swiftly sunk in to the grave”.

Only George, who served with the New Zealand Rifles appears on the SNWM Roll of Honour

According to the unveiling report in the Northern Ensign and Weekly Gazette - Wednesday 6 September 1922

the memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 2 September 1922.

At that time it had only 44 names, supposedly, compared to the 53 WW1 names, today.

Looking at the memorial it is hard to work out which are the 9 names added in the intervening years

One of two brothers named here (and on the Barrock Estate memorial) is also named on the Melrose War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

SERGT. A. ROSIE.
Andrew Rosie – age 28 – Lance Sergeant (S/14832) 14th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Andrew enlisted in the Argylls at Galashiels, Selkirkshire in November 1915.
Born 1889 Thurso, Caithness. Son of the late Alexander and Mary (Campbell) Rosie of Lyth, near Wick, Caithness.
Missing in Action on 26 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.

Also named on the Bower Parish War Memorial in Caithness and on the Barrock Estate memorial in Lyth, Caithness, together with his brother George Campbell Rosie, Corporal (1187) 2nd Seaforth Highlanders who died of wounds in the 12th General Hospital in Rouen on 14 April 1916. Andrew was named as his legatee.
George was born in 1891 in Halkirk, Caithness and by 1901 Andrew, George, Alexander and Isabella were living with their grandmother Jane Rosie in Bower.
