The memorial consists of a copper beech tree and accompanying plaque. It was unveiled in 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Post Office Fellowship of Remembrance.

by January 2008 it became apparent that the location was far from suitable, it would rapidly outgrow its location and block the view from the hotel to the river so it was moved a few tens of yards and it now sits beside the path leading down to the river Nith.

My thanks to Simon Kelly, who I think is the company secretary of the company which runs the Friars Carse Hotel, for his help and information.

I do not know the significance of the names on this plaque. The few I have traced seem to have no obvious connection to Scotland and I am still investigating this.

I am also looking into the Remembrance Books held by the Post Office Fellowship of Remembrance.

I'm sure there is another thread on the project for this but I cannot find it!

Post Office Fellowship of Remembrance was established by donations from Post Office employees to purchase properties for their families’ use as a living memorial to their fellow workers who had died in the two World Wars.
Properties, usually country houses, were bought all over the UK to provide convalescent and, later, holiday facilities for members and their families.
My dad stayed at Auldgirth in the 1950's after an operation and my mother and I visited.
So actually the whole building is a War Memorial.

Found the previous posting here (bottom of page 2)

Incidentally we seem to have threads for Royal Mail memorials and for Post Office memorials.
I know legally they are separate businesses these days but........

I have been to the Waterhead Hotel, Coniston, Cumbria to day where there is another almost identical memorial with the same few names.

This is now WMR, ex UKNIWM, memorial 72326.
