The ARBROATH HERALD is to publish a story about the Alma Works & Netherward Works war memorial being traced and they were to have their photographer attended the locus to take a photograph for their weekly newspaper . The Arbroath Herald is published on a Friday each week .

Yes, the Arbroath reporter of the Courier & Advertiser did a good write up for the newspaper . I congratulated him !
Good detective work by the member of the Public too . Seems he must have had some knowledge in this before with his persistance in finding its present location and then visiting the locus as well to establish that it was there ! |

ARBROATH HERALD : Friday 8 January 2010:
GREAT WAR MEMORIAL REDISCOVERED : Was Moved to New Development :
Report by Gordon Cook
A Few weeks ago we carried a plea by reader PATRICK W. ANDERSON regarding the whereabouts of the ALMA WORKS and NETHERWARD WORKS GREAT WAR MEMORIAL that had been on display at ARBROATH'S SIGNAL TOWER MUSEUM.
The memorial had been on the premises of Messrs FRANCIS WEBSTER & SONS LTD and was created to commemorate employees killed in the Great War.
Mr Anderson saw it at the Signal Tower in April 1993 , while on police leave from Keighley , Yorkshire , to his native Arbroath.
But when he went to look again for it recently it had disappeared , and nobody seemed to know where it had gone . Mr Anderson was particularly anxious that it should be traced because the UK NATIONAL INVENTORY OF WAR MEMORIALS at the Imperial War Museum in London had it recorded as being at the Signal Tower.
But on Tuesday he was back in touch with good news.
Mr Anderson had learned that during the conversation of the Alma Works into flats the Memorial had been re located in the development , which is now known as Weavers Close .
There is a plaque outside recording the unveiling by the Rt Hon Michael Forsyth, MP, then Secretary of State for Scotland and the unveiling date of June 24, 1996.
Mr Anderson was unsure if the Memorial had been put in place for the official opening , but this has now been confirmed for us by Mr Roy Clark, of Baxter Clark & Paul , who was the project architect for the Alma Works redevelopment .
Mr Clark told us ," The Plaque is back where it came from , where it belongs ."
In a further development Mr Anderson added, " As a result of your publishing the story I received a phone call from a member of the Arbroath Public who read the report and noticed his Great Uncle , GUNNER DAVID AITKEN , Royal Field Artillery , aged 21 years , as a casualty on June 28, 1918. He was listed on the NETHERWARD WORKS section of this memorial . The man now intends to visit his great uncle's grave in France.
And in a final message Mr Anderson added a snippet about another caller who remembered him when he was a little boy and she worked for solicitors Clark Oliver - for which post she had been interviewed by Mr Anderson's father !
The article in the Arbroath Herald for Friday , 8th January 2010 shows a photograph of "The Alma Works First War Memorial in Weavers Close ."
( Thought this article may be good material for any future research into this Memorial relating to Flax mill / sail cloth firm in Arbroath )

It may be worth mentioning the works were renamed "Alma" in the 1850's shortly after the success in the battle of the same name during the Crimean War.
There was for many years a pub acoss the road called the Alma Bar, it closed around the time of the millenium due to flooding and is now a business premesis. |
