PTE. ROBT. K. BRACKENRIDGE - MGC.
Robert Kennan Brackenridge, Private (141269) 32nd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Formerly Private (13375) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Age 20.
Robert enlisted in September 1914 and landed with the 7th Cameron Highlanders at Boulogne in July 1915. He served at Loos, Arras, Marne, Armentieres, Somme, Ypres and at some point was transferred to the MGC. He was killed near St.Quentin.
Born 1898 in the Officers Quarters, Barlinnie Prison, Glasgow. Son of John and Mary (Jamieson) Brackenridge. In 1911 Robert was living with his Uncle and Aunt, David and Agnes (Jamieson) Handly at Rattra Cottage, Borgue.
Killed in action 29 September 1918 and buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, France.


PTE. JOHN BROWN - SEAFORTHS.
John Brown, Private (S/13401) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Formerly Private (TS/1609) Army Service Corps. Age 36.
John was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy. He went to France with the ASC in December 1914.
Born 1881 in Borgue. Son of Thomas and Mary (Gordon) Brown of Culraven, Borgue.
Killed in action 11 April 1917 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Rouex, France.

Thomas Brown, Corporal (70570) 138th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Age 38.
Thomas was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy. His battery went to Salonika in August 1916. He died in the 31st Casualty Clearing Station and was buried in Janes Military Cemetery but was re-interred in Sarigol in February 1921.
Born 1879 in Borgue. Son of Thomas and Mary (Gordon) Brown of Culraven, Borgue.
Killed in action 18 September 1918 and buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kritston, Thessaloniki, Greece.

L.CPL. ROBERT BRYDSON - GORDONS.
Robert Brydson, Lance Corporal (9848) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 28.
Robert was a farm servant/labourer when he enlisted in the 1st Gordons in 1905. He transferred to the 2nd battalion in October 1910 and served in India and Egypt. He landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge on 7 October 1914 but was fatally wounded and died on the No.6 Ambulance Train.
Born 1886 at Loch Hill, Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Margaret Brydson of Graplin, Borgue.
Died of wounds 2 November 1914 and buried in Hazebrouck, Communal Cemetery, France.

PTE. GEORGE CAMPBELL - GRENADIER GUARDS.
Possibly:
George Little Campbell, Private (20443) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 31.
George joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in October 1915. Later he transferred to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1886 in Borgue. Son of William and Jane Anna Tomlinson (Little) Campbell.
Missing in action 3 May1917 and listed on the Arras Memorial, France.


PTE. THOMAS N. CLARK - KOSB.
Thomas Nelson Clark, Private (41798) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Formerly Private (5281&29600) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 29.
Thomas enlisted in June1916 in the KOSB. He was transferred to the 12th HLI in France.
Born 1888 in Kirkcudbright. Son of William and Mary (Conchie) Clark of Castle St. Kirkcudbright. Husband of Helen (Gorman) Clark of Pringleton Row, Borgue who he married in 1912 in Kirkcudbright.
Killed in action 27 February 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Borgue U.F. Church Roll of Honour (now in Borgue Village Hall), on the St.Cuthbert's Church Memorial and on the War Memorial in Kirkcudbright.

SGT. JAMES CURRIE - KOSB.
James Currie, Sergeant (17576) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 30.
James was employed by Messrs Heron and Sons of Twynholm when he enlisted in January 1915.
Born 1886 in Burnyard Cottage, Borgue. Son of Isabella Currie and step-son of James McKill of Borgue. Husband of Nellie (Peacock) Currie who he married in 1911 at Tongland.
Killed in action 14 April 1917 and buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the memorial and roll of honour in Twynholm Parish Church and on the Twynholm War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM CURRIE - KOSB.
William Currie, Private (11781) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
William joined the 2nd KOSB in France in October 1914. He later transferred to the 6th Battalion before joining the 1st Battalion.
Born 1894 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Henrietta (Dalziel or Kimm) Currie of Borgue.
Died of wounds 15 April 1918 and buried in Aire Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Borgue U.F. Church Roll of Honour (now in Borgue Village Hall)


PTE. SAMUEL DEMPSTER - GORDONS.
Samuel McBride Dempster, Private (S/13449) 8th/10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 21.
Samuel was a foot-man with Sir Charles Dalrymple of New Hailes, Mussleburgh when he enlisted in November 1915. He served at the Somme, was wounded on 1 August at Ypres and died of wounds at a Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1896 at Balannan, Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Jessie (McBride) Dempster of Mill of Senwick, Borgue. Enlisted November 1915 and served at the Somme and Ypres.
Died of wounds 3 August 1917 and buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
Also named on the Tongland Parish War Memorial.

LIEUT. WILLIAM GILMOUR - SCOTTISH RIFLES.
William Gilmour, Second Lieutenant: 13th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) attached to 6th Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) Formerly Corporal (2163) Lanarkshire Yeomanry. Age 26.
William had been educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and served for 3 years with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry while managing his father's farm at Chapleton of Borgue. He was mobilised in August 1914 and commissioned in March 1915. He then served with the Lancasters at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia, and was killed at Sannaiyet during the attempted relief of Kut-el-Amara.
Born 1889 in Borgue. Son of William Pollock Gilmour and Jean Irving (McMyn) Gilmour of Borgue.
Missing in action 9 April 1916 and listed on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.


PTE. WILLIAM HALL - SCOTTISH RIFLES.
William Hall, Private (25902) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 21.
Born 1895 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Mary (McKeand) Hall of Borgue. Enlisted April 1916 in Royal Field Artillery before tranferring to Cameronians.
Missing in action 23 October 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.


PTE. WILLIAM HALLIDAY - KOSB.
Thought to be
William Halliday, Private (38389) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Formerly Private (23248) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 30.
William was working as a cheesemaker at Redhills, Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted.
Born 1887 at East Kirkcarsewell, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire - As William Telfer. Son of Jane Telfer.
Killed in action 10 June 1917 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
Also named on the Torthorwald Parish War Memorial in Collin Village, on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


SEAMAN REGINALD HASKELL - RND.
Reginald Cecil Haskell, Able Seaman (Clyde Z/7729) HMS Genista, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Age 18.
Born 1898 in Islington, London. Son of Henry George and Margaret (McKinna) Haskell. Adopted son (and Grand-son) of John and Margaret McKinna of Borgue, he was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and was a solictor's clerk in Kirkcudbright when he enlisted in January 1916.
Killed in action/Lost at sea 23 October 1916 when the Sloop/Minesweeper "Genista" was torpedoed by U57 off the West coast of Ireland, and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

SGT. ANDREW HOGG - GORDONS.
Andrew Hogg, Sergeant (265684) 1/6th (Banff and Donside) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Attached to King's African Rifles. Age 23.
Andrew was a cheese maker in Huntly, Aberdeenshire when he enlisted in September 1914 as Private (10997). He joined his battalion in France in February 1915 and served at Nueve Chappelle, at the Somme and, later, in German East Africa. He died of wounds at Lurvegn Drift, G. E. A.
Born 1894 in Borgue. Son of Alexander and Janet (Beattie) Hogg of Upper Senwick, Borgue and, later, of Drumore Dairy, Kirkcudbright.
Died of wounds 7 November 1917 and buried in Iringa Cemetery, Tanzania. Also named on the Kirkcudbright and Huntly War Memorials.

CPL.HARRY HOGG - GORDONS.
Henry Hogg, Corporal (S/10744) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 25.
Harry enlisted in June 1915 and joined the 8th Gordons in France in November 1915. He served at Broodsinde and Bullecourt. He was wounded in August 1916 and then joined the 2nd Battalion. He died of mulitple wounds in the South African Hospital in Abbeville.
Born 1892 in Borgue. Son of Alexander and Janet (Beattie) Hogg of Upper Senwick, Borgue.
Died of wounds 16 October 1917 and buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Also named on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial.


PTE. SAMUEL KERR - RSF.
Samuel Irving Kerr, Private (40914) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 26.
Samuel was a ploughman at Craigley Farm, Gelston, Castle Douglas when he enlisted in August 1916 as Private (25707) KOSB. He went to France in November 1916 and was transferred to the RSF.
Born 1891 at Brighouse, Borgue. Son of William and Jane (Irving) Kerr.
Missing in action 3 May 1917 and listed on the Arras Memorial, France.

PTE. JAMES KIRKPATRICK - KOSB.
James Kirkpatrick, Private (14741) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
James enlisted in September 1914. He was drowned in the sinking of the troopship “Royal Edward” in the Aegean Sea.
Born 1894 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Euphemia (Findlay) Kirkpatrick of South Park, Borgue.
Lost at sea 13 August 1915 and listed on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.
Of the some 900 casualties about 60 were from the 9th (Reserve) Battalion of the KOSB - replacements for losses in the 1st KOSB


PTE. THOMAS MARSHALL - CANADIANS.
Thomas Marshall, Private (276496) 46th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) Age 22.
Thomas was farming near Rocanville, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in July 1916 in nearby town of Welwyn. He was killed at Thiant, near Valenciennes.
Born 1896 in Kirkinner, Wigtownshire. Son of William and Jane (McNeil) Marshall of Borgue.
In 1911 Thomas, aged 16, was working at Rattra Farm, Borgue. His parents and the rest of his family were nearby at Longue Croft, Borgue.
Killed in action 1 November 1918 and buried in Aulnoy Communal Cemetery, France.


PTE. JOHN MILROY - HLI.
John Milroy, Private (4224) 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 34.
John had been educated at Borgue Academy and was living in Sheffield when he enlisted in June 1915 in Glasgow. He served at the Somme and was killed at High Wood.
Born 1882 at Knockbrex, Borgue. Son of William and Susan (Muir) Milroy of Carrick, Borgue.
Missing in action 15 July 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

PTE. ROBERT MORRISON - KOSB.
Robert Morrison, Private (9289) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Attached to 27th Brigade Trench Mortar Battery. Age 30.
Robert enlisted in the 1st KOSB in 1905 and served for 8 years in Egypt, Khartoum and India. He re-enlisted in August 1914 and landed with the 2nd KOSB at Le Havre on 15 August. He served at Mons, Loos and Dixmunde, and was wounded twice at the Aisne. In November he was wounded again and evacuated to hospital in London. He later transferred to the 6th KOSB. He was accidentally killed but there are no details on record.
Born 1887 in Parton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Jessie Smith Morrison and step-son of John Hawthorne Galloway of Borgue.
Died on Active Service on 10 November 1917 and buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the memorial and roll of honour in Twynholm Parish Church and on the Twynholm War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES McGAW - CAMERONS.
Thought to be
James McGaw, Private (S/13817) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Age 23.
James was a farm servant when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and was reported missing after the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Margaret (Agnew) McGaw of Gelston.
Missing in action 26 September 1915 and listed on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Gelston War Memorial, the Kelton Parish Church Memorial and on the Kelton Parish Roll of Honour now in the Royal British Legion, Castle Douglas.

L.CPL. JAMES McGOWAN MM - CAMERONS.
James Alexander McGowan, Military Medal, Lance Corporal (S/13888) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Age 22.
James was a dairyman when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and served at Loos where he was awarded a Military Medal for his action with the Machine Gun Section. A year later James was seriously wounded and died in 47th Field Ambulance.
Born 1894 in Kirkcudbright. Son of James and Agnes (Kennan) McGowan of High Nunton Farm, near Borgue.
Died of wounds on 9 October 1916 and buried in Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France.
Also named on the St.Cuthbert's Church Memorial and on the War Memorial in Kirkcudbright.


PTE. JOHN McILWRAITH - KOSB.
John McIlwraith, Private (45505) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
John enlisted in June 1917 but was taken ill while in training. He died of meningitis in the King's Cross War Hospital in Dundee.
Born 1899 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Annie Malcolmson (McKie) McIlwraith of Borness, Borgue.
Died on Service on 14 August 1918 and buried in Borgue Parish Churchyard


PTE. ROBERT McKEAND - KOSB.
Robert McKeand, Private (23498) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
Robert was employed as a carter on the Knockbrex estate in Borgue when he enlisted in April 1916.
Born 1897 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Maggie Jane (Lidderdale) McKeand of Carleton, Borgue.
Missing in action on 3 September 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Rodan McSkimming, Private (2176) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 18.
Born 1896 in Parton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Jessie Margaret (Middleton) McSkimming. Rodan was at Auchenhay Lodge, Borgue when he enlisted.
Killed in action 8 July 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Turkey. Also named on the War Memorial in Gatehouse-of-Fleet.


PTE. JAMES NEIL - CANADIANS.
James Neil, Private (147458) 78th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) Age 36.
James enlisted in July 1915 at Winnipeg, Manitoba where he worked as a labourer and where he was a member of the local militia the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers.
Born 1882 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Son of John and Janet (Manson) Neil of Brighouse, Borgue.
Missing in action 9 April 1917 and listed on the Vimy Memorial, France.

Robert Neil, Lance Corporal (240839) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 30.
Robert enlisted in November 1914 and served in Egypt, Palestine and France.
Born 1887 in Borgue. Son of John and Janet (Manson) Neil of Brighouse, Borgue.
Killed in action 29 July 1918 and buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, Aisne, France.

PTE. ALEXANDER PAPPLE - CANADIANS.
Alexander Papple, Private (106472) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles. Age 30.
Born 1886 in Borgue. Son of John and Elizabeth (Houston) Papple of Borgue House Cottage. Formerly Seaman (SS1143) Royal Navy he was farming in Brandon, Manitoba when he enlisted in December 1914. He sailed in June 1915 and landed in France in September.
Missing in action 5 June 1916 and listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Note: All Canadian records give his date of death as 5 June 1916. I have raised this with CWGC (16/6/2019) - CWGC have amended their records


PTE. MICHAEL WALLACE - SCOTS GUARDS.
Michael Wallace, Guardsman (10164) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. Age 22.
In 1911 Michael, aged 18, was a carter at Knockbrex estate, Borgue. He then became a policeman in the City of Glasgow “D” division and was living at 60 Nicholson Street in Glasgow when he enlisted August 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 2 December 1914.
Born 1892 in Kirkcudbright. Son of Michael and Elizabeth Jane (Rae) Wallace of Borgue, and later of Kirkcarswell Farm, Dundrennan, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in action on 25 January 1915 and listed on Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Rerrick Parish War Memorial in Dundrennan, on the City of Glasgow Police Memorial and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


PTE. ANDREW WATSON - KOSB.
Andrew Telfer Watson, Private (2662) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Andrew and his brother Joseph were employed on farm work at Brighouse, Borgue when they enlisted in December 1914. They landed with their battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1894 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Maxwell) Watson of Brighouse, Borgue.
Killed in action on 30 December 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.

L.CPL. JOHN WILLIAMSON - RF.
John (Jack) Williamson, Lance Corporal (73172) 23rd Battalion (1st Sportsman's) Royal Fusiliers. Formerly Private (GS1228) Royal Fusiliers. Age 26.
Jack was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and enlisted in November 1914, landing with his battalion in France in November 1915. He served at Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Delville Wood, where he was wounded and evacuated to hospital in the UK. He returned to France in March 1918 and fought at St. Quentin. The Battalion were out of the line and in billets at Berles au Bois when they came under shell-fire. Jack, who was in the Transport section, was killed while taking horses from the stables.
Born 1892 at Upper Senwick, Borgue. Son of James and Helen (Cairns) Williamson. Educated at Kirkcudbright Academy.
Killed in action on 31 May 1918 and buried in Berles New Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. ALEXANDER WILSON - KOSB.
Served under his birth name
Andrew Stewart, Private (9530) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Alexander enlisted in 1906 in the 1st KOSB and served in Egypt and India. At the outbreak of war the battalion returned to the UK in December 1914 and then moved to Gallipoli landing in April 1915. He was wounded and evacuated to hospital but died of cancer in the Craigleith Military Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1888 in Springholm, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. as Alexander James John McGuffog. Son of Jane Stewart - later Mrs Jane Airley and then Mrs Jane Wilson of Brighouse, Borgue.
William was a half-brother of Adam Stewart Airley – the first man listed on this schedule – and a half brother to Robert Wilson (see below).
Died on 10 September 1916 and buried in Edinburgh (Comely Bank) Cemetery.

SGT. ROBERT A. WILSON - RFA

Robert Alfred Wilson, Sergeant (169890) "D" Battery, 190th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 21.
Robert enlisted in September 1914. He served in the 41st Division in France until November 1917 and then in Italy until March 1918. He was killed at Ypres.
Born 1898 in Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Jane (Stewart - formerly Airley) of Brighouse, Borgue.
Killed in action on 3 October 1918 and buried in Hooge Crater, Ypres, Belgium.

STOKER ALEXANDER YOUNG - RN.
Alexander Young, Stoker 1st Class (K/13456) HMS Invincible, Royal Navy. Age 23.
Alexander joined the navy in November 1911. He served in the Battles of the Bight, the Falkland Islands and at Jutland where his ship, the battle-cruiser HMS Invincible, blew-up during the Battle.
Born 1893 in Borgue. Son of Alexander and Jessie Johnston (Jamieson) Young of King St. Castle Douglas.
Killed in action/lost at sea 31 May 1916 and listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
Also named on the Kelton Parish Church Memorial and on the Kelton Parish Roll of Honour in the Royal British Legion, Castle Douglas.


PTE. JOSEPH B. YOUNG - SCOTS GUARDS.
Joseph Blackley Young, Guardsman (8657) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. Age 21.
Joseph enlisted in the Scots Guards in July 1913. He had previously spent 2 years with the Kirkcudbrightshire Battery of the Royal Field Artillery Territorial Force. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August 1914.
Born 1896 in Borgue. Son of William and Janet (McGinnies) Young of Borgue Village.
Killed in action 30 March 1916 and buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery. Ypres, Belgium.
Also listed on the St.Cuthbert's Church Memorial and on the War Memorial in Kirkcudbright.

1939 - 1945


SGT. ALEXANDER M. KILTIE - RAF.
Alexander Murphie Kiltie, Sergeant/Air Gunner (1822765) 630 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 19.
Alexander's Lancaster bomber took off from RAF East Kirkby in Lincolnshire for a raid on Frankfurt but it crashed near Adinkerke, Belgium.
Born 1924 in Mochrum, Wigtownshire. Son of David and Hannah (Murphie) Kiltie of Borness Point, Borgue.
Killed in action 18 March 1944 and buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.


SGT. WILLIAM T. MUIR - RAF.
William Thomas Muir, Sergeant/Air Gunner/Wireless Operator (1344303) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 22.
William enlisted in 1941. His Wellington bomber was on a non-operational night exercise from the No.3 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit at RAF Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire when it crashed at approx 0200 hours near Blaneau Fessting, Caernarvonshire. His death was registered at Merioneth in North Wales.
Born 1921 in Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Neil) Muir of Kirkcudbright.
Died on active service 20 November 1943 and buried in Girthon Parish Cemetery, Gatehouse. (CWG)


PTE. SAMUEL McC. McCREADIE - KOSB.
Samuel McClurg McCreadie, Private (3192208) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Born 1918 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire. Son of William and Grace (Dryfesdale) McCreadie of Ingleston, Borgue.
Killed on active service 18 November 1940 and buried in Borgue Parish Churchyard (CWG)
Samuel's billet was hit by a German land-mine. 30 KOSB's were killed.

Samuel Twiname, Leading Aircraftsman, Royal Air Force. Age 33.
Born 1911 in Urr Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David and Jane (Clark or Roan) Twiname of Earlston Cottage, Borgue. Husband of Edna (Samuel) Twiname of Hartlepool who he married in 1939 in Glasgow.
Died 17 March 1944 in Hartlepool Hospital (cause unknown)
