SGM. JOHN MARTIN, R.C.S.
John Martin – age 23 – Lance Corporal (2336193) 6th Line of Communication Signals, Royal Corps of Signals.
John was brought up in Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas before he became an electrician in Kirkcudbright.
Born c.1919 in Glasgow. Son of ???? Foster son of Thomas and Mary Hornell of Kirkcudbright. Husband of Ann (Barton) Martin who he married in 1940 in Whitby, Yorkshire.
Died of Wounds on 12 June 1942 and buried in Tobruk War Cemetery, Libya.
Also on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


L/SGT. DAVID MIDDLETON, 77 FD. RGT. R.A.
David Middleton – age 29 – Lance Sergeant (810148) 88 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
From December 1941 to the fall of Singapore in February 1942 the 9th Indian Division fought a relatively successful defensive retreat down Malaya's east coast. David died as a prisoner of war in Japan and was re-interred in Yokohama in September 1946.
Born 1914 in Kirkcudbright. Son of David and Grace (Dale) Middleton of Kirkcudbright. Husband of Isa Scoone (Adams) Middleton of Kirkcudbright who he married in 1931 in Kirkcudbright.
Died on Service on 8 July 1943 and buried in Yokohama War Cemetery, Japan.
Also named on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


GNR. GEORGE MILROY, R.A.
George Milroy – age 20 – Gunner (918384) Royal Artillery.
George was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy. He served his apprenticeship as a butcher at Castle Street in Kirkcudbright and was a footballer with St. Cuthbert Wanderers when he enlisted pre-war in the Kirkcudbrightshire Battery of the R.A. He was transferred to a section of the Salvage Corps and served in France and Belgium. George was reported missing during the Dunkirk evacuation.
Born 1919 in Kirkcudbright as William George Milroy. Son of John and Catherine (Mansfield) Milroy of 15 Union Street, Kirkcudbright.
Missing in Action between 27 and 28 May 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial.

STKR. GEORGE MITCHELL, H.M.S. EXMOOR R.N.
George Jeffrey Mitchell – age 26 – Stoker 2nd Class (C/KX 112294) HMS Exmoor, Royal Navy.
Before the war George was mate on the yacht “Aillonette” owned by Brigadier General Swiny of Arbigland, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire. He was drowned when the Hunt class escort destroyer, Exmoor, sank off Lowestoft as the result of an explosion during an E-boat attack on a North Sea convoy.
Born 1915 at Kirkcudbright. Son of the late Robert Craik Mitchell and of the late Georgina (McGill) Mitchell of Kirkcudbright.
Missing in Action/Lost at sea on 25 February 1941 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, UK.
Also named on the Kirkbean Parish War Memorial and on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


LT. ALAN K. MOTHERSILL, 1ST PARA. SQN. R.E.
Alan Keith Mothersill – age 21 – Lieutenant (226306) Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers.
Alan's father became minister of St. Cuthbert's Parish church in 1927 and Alan was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and at George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1936 to 1939. He was studying Engineering at Edinburgh University when he enlisted in 1941 and he was commissioned in February 1942. Alan was killed, serving alongside the 2nd Parachute Battalion, in the cork forest of Tamera in north-east Tunisia and he was buried there. He was re-interred in Tabarka in May 1944.
Born 1921 in Montreal, Canada. Son of the Revd. John Elmore Mothersill, who had served as a Chaplain in the Canadian Army in WW1, and of Eleanor Oughtred Mothersill, of St. Cuthbert's Manse, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 10 March 1943 and buried in Tabarka Ras Rajel War Cemetery, Tunisia.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial, on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial, on the George Watson's College Memorial, on the Old College Memorial in Edinburgh University and on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.

GNR. JAMES MULDOON, A.A. R.A.
James Muldoon – age 41 – Gunner (2973474) 9 Reserve Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
James was stationed at Husbands Bosworth near Market Harborough in Leicestershire and was found dead in his railway carriage when it arrived there as he returned from leave.
Born c.1901 in Glasgow. Son of ???? Husband of Isabella (Campbell or Whan) Muldoon of 25 Union Street, Kirkcudbright.
Isabella Campbell or Whan or Muldoon married Hans Ziener in 1948 in Kirkcudbright.
Died on Active Service between 14 & 15 November 1942 and buried in Kirkcudbright (St. Cuthbert) Old Churchyard. (CWG)


CPL. WILLIAM W. McCLYMONT, R.A.F.
William Wallace McClymont – age 31 – Corporal (1019840) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William had been the manager of a drapers before he joined up. He died of cancer in the Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire.
Born 1912 in Maybole, Ayrshire. Son of Alexander Nimmo McClymont and Mary (Wallace) McClymont. Husband of Margaret Watson (Richmond) McClymont of Croy, Kirkcudbright who he married in 1938 in Maybole, Ayrshire.
Died on Service on 6 May 1943 and buried in Kirkcudbright (St. Cuthbert) Old Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


FT/SGT. JACK W. McCORMACK, R.A.F.
John William McCormack – age 19? – Flight Sergeant (550582) Royal Air Force.
“Jack” was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and joined the RAF before the war. He escaped before the fall of Singapore in February 1942 but was made a prisoner of war on Java. He was one of many prisoners taken to the island of Ambon to build airfields. On their way back to Java they were killed when the Japanese ship Suez Maru was torpedoed and sunk by the US submarine “Bonefish”. Survivors of the sinking were killed by the crew of the escorting Japanese minesweeper W-12.
Born (possibly – 1924 in Kelton Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire as John William McCormick)
Son of Mr. & Mrs. William McCormack of 5 Kilndale Terrace, Kirkcudbright.
Died on Service on 29 November 1943 and named on the Singapore Memorial.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial.

GNR. JOHN McCRACKEN, R.A.
John McCracken – age 22 – Gunner (875868) 11 (Honourable Artillery Company) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery.
John was a greenkeeper living at 54 Millflats, Kirkcudbright when he joined the army. He was a signaller with the RA when he married in 1941. The 11th (HAC) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery served in North Africa initially with 25 pounder guns and later with the M7 Priest self-propelled guns. Army reports show that John died between 17/8/1942 and 14/11/1942 as a prisoner of war of the Italian Army. It is likely that the first date is when he was reported captured.
Born 1920 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew and Elizabeth (McMillan) McCracken.
Husband of Annie Carmichael (Holms) McCracken of Raploch, Stirlingshire who he married in 1941 in Stirling.
Died on Service on 14 November 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.


FT/LT. A. NEILL McGLASHAN, 156 SQN. R.A.F.V.R.
Alexander Neill McGlashan – age 32 – Flight Lieutenant/Pilot (110887) 156 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Alexander was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and served his apprenticeship in Kirkcudbright. He was employed at the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire when he enlisted. He was promoted from Sergeant (1124495) to Pilot Officer in November 1941 and to Flight Lieutenant in November 1943. His Lancaster bomber took off from RAF Warboys, Huntingdonshire for a raid on Berlin but was shot down. Alexander was originally buried in Doberitz-Elsgrund Cemetery but was re-interred in Berlin in December 1946.
Born 1911 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Elizabeth MacMillan (Neill) McGlashan and of James McGlashan of Balinbreich, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 3 January 1944 and buried in Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.

CPL. JOHN McGRATH, SEAFORTH HRS.
John McGrath – age 32 – Corporal (3185204) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
John was killed at the battle of Wadi Akarit in Tunisia.
Born 1910 at Blairbuy Farm, Glasserton, Wigtownshire. Son of Thomas and Anne (Durning) McGrath. Husband of Edith Cavell (Swan) McGrath of Kirkcudbright who he married in 1941 in Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1943 and buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Tunisia.


AB. WILLIAM McNEILLIE, H.M.T. KELT R.N.V.R.
William McNeillie – age 20 – Seaman (LT/JX 207466) HM Trawler “Kelt” Royal Naval Patrol Service.
William was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and was employed by a baker in Kirkcudbright when he enlisted in 1939. The Trawler “Kelt” was operating off the west coast of Africa on escort and anti-submarine duties. She was severely damaged in December 1942 in Lagos Harbour when a tanker exploded destroying 3 other trawlers.
Born 1922 in Kirkcudbright. Son of William and Nellie (McNeil) McNeillie, of Millflats, Kirkcudbright.
Died on Active Service on 5 December 1942 and named on the Lowestoft Naval Memorial, Suffolk.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.

PAY. LT. ROBERT W. ROBB, H.M.S. ARK ROYAL R.N.V.R.
Robert William Robb – age 31 – Lieutenant (S) HMS Spartiate, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
HMS Spartiate was a World War II Royal Navy shore base in the St Enoch Hotel, Glasgow.
Robert was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and became a bank clerk with the Bank of England in London. He was a long standing member of the Naval Volunteer Reserve and he was posted as a Paymaster Lieutenant on board the aircraft carrier “Ark Royal” when she was torpedoed in the Mediterranean near Gibraltar on 13 November 1941. Almost all of the crew were rescued before the “Ark Royal” sank on the following day. Robert and other crew members were passengers on the destroyer HMS Stanley (formerly the USS McCalla) when she was escorting a convoy from Gibraltar to Britain. She was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-574.
Born 1910 in Kirkcudbright. Son (twin of Thomas Handling Robb) of the late Provost John Robb and of Mary Jane (Handling) of Kirkcudbright. Husband of Winifred Thomson (Macdonald) Robb of Highgate, London and of 31 Castle Street, Kirkcudbright who he married in 1935 in South Shawlands, Pollok, Glasgow.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 19 December 1941 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


W.O.1 THOMAS W. B. ROBISON, R.E.
Thomas William Brydon Robison – age 41 – Warrant Officer Class 1 (1854825) Royal Engineers.
Thomas was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and was serving his apprenticeship as an architect with Sir John James Burnett in Glasgow when he enlisted in the 4th Reserve Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders in October 1918. He transferred to the Royal Engineers Architectural Section and served with this unit for the next 25 years. He was on his second term of duty in Singapore when he was captured at the fall of the city on 15 February 1942. He collapsed and died during the march to Changi camp and he was buried there but was re-interred at Kranji in April 1946.
Born 1900 in Kirkcudbright. Son of Joseph and Janet (Brydon) Robison, of 14 Castle Street, Kirkcudbright.
Died on Service on 17 February 1942 and buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.

GNR. ROBERT ROWAN, 172 FD. REGT. R.A.
Robert Rowan – age 31 – Gunner (810147) 172 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1913 in the Poorhouse, Stranraer, Wigtownshire.
Son Margaret Rowan of Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire.
Foster-son of Isabella Forrest of Millburn Street, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 6 February 1944 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.
This was the second of Isabella's foster sons to be killed. See Cecil R. Boyd above.


ORD. SMN. PETER SIMPSON, H.M.S. HOOD R.N.
Peter Simpson – age 18 – Ordinary Seaman (P/JX 159308) HMS Hood, Royal Navy.
Peter was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and prior to joining the navy he had been a grocer's message boy for two months. He had been posted to the battle-cruiser “Hood” after his previous ship had been torpedoed and sunk. The “Hood” exploded and sank after being hit by shells from the German battleship “Bismark” during the Battle of the Denmark Straits.
Born 1923 in Kirkcudbright. Son of George and Elizabeth Jane (McKinnell) Simpson of Graystone, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 May 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


CPL. JOHN F. SNEDDON, R.S.F.
John Findlay Sneddon – age 19 – Lance Corporal (14554338) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and was employed in the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Co-operative Society branch in Kirkcudbright when he enlisted in 1942. The 11th RSF arrived in Normandy shortly after the initial D-Day landings on 6 June and fought in the battle for Caen where John was killed.
Born 1924 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John Findlay Sneddon and of Mary Henry (Findlay) Sneddon of 6 Castlebank, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 25 June 1944 and buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, France.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.

W/SGT. ANDREW STRAITON H.A.C.
Andrew Straiton – age 24 – Sergeant (944785) 11 (Honourable Artillery Company) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery.
Andrew was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and was a postman in Kirkcudbright. A Territorial with the Kirkcudbrightshire Battery of the Royal Field Artillery, he was mobilised in September 1939. He was transferred to the HAC where he served as a despatch rider and was in action in Lybia. He died of kidney disease while a Prisoner of War in the Prigione die Guerra 65 camp at Gravina-Altamura near Bari, Italy and was buried there. He was re-interred in Bari in September 1944.
Born 1918 in Kirkcudbright (as William?) Son of the late Andrew Straiton and of Agnes Jane (Morrow) Straiton of High Street, Kirkcudbright Husband of Jean Fleming (Stewart) Straiton who he married in Kirkcudbright, when serving as a Bombardier in the 38th Signal Training Regiment, in January 1940.
Died on Service on 4 November 1942 and buried in Bari War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.


SGT. JOHN J. WEMYESS, 619 OP. SQN. R.A.F.
John James Wemyss – age 21 – Sergeant (1344329) 619 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Jack was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy before joining the County Council in Kirkcudbright. He was a keen footballer with St. Cuthbert Wanderers.
619 Squadron was formed at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, on 18th April 1943. Two months later John's Lancaster bomber took off for an air test over the Wash and was lost without a trace.
Born 1921 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John James Wemyss and Georgina Hunter (Riley) Wemyss of Kirkcudbright.
Died on Active Service on 9 June 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy memorial and on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright.
