There is a handwritten note on Michael's Grave Registration record showing
N/K (Son) Mr James Sanaghan, 76 Old Logan's Row, Motherwell, Lanarkshire.
(And all Sanaghan births 1880 to 1900 are in Lanarkshire) _________________ Ken |

Thanks for that, Ken. An interesting typewritten comment on the grave registration document too! He might not be buried there at all.
A wee mistake on SNWM perhaps, regarding Michael's birth place - or else I've got the wrong man altogether! (Although that's the only Sanaghan and neither Shanaghan was Connaught Rangers)
A fair few of the men on this memorial were born in Lanarkshire - most of them ex-miners. The pits at Millhall and Fallin, a couple of miles from the centre of the burgh, opened in the early 1900s; the owners saw no need to build miners' rows at Millhall as it was within travelling/walking distance of the town.

Commemorated on the memorial within Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Stirling
Extract from the Official History; "Naval Operations" by Sir Julian S. Corbett. 1923
.............At the other end of the line the duel between the Indefatigable and the Von der Tann had been growing in intensity till, a few minutes after 4.0, the British ship was suddenly hidden in a burst of flame and smoke. A salvo of three shots had fallen on her upper deck and must have penetrated to a magazine. She staggered out of the line, sinking by the stern when another salvo struck her; a second terrible explosion rent her, she turned over and in a moment all trace of her was gone...... |

On the war graves site, there is a photo of a monument in Mar/Valley Cemetery to Captain John Brebber of the A&SH; the inscription reads: Captain JOHN BREBBER
Who served in the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders
From 5th March 1860 to 30th June 1881
And from that date, in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Until his death on 20th October 1886
This monument is erected by his brother officers.
John's 5th son, Robert Brebber was killed during WW1 and is commemorated on the Stirling war memorial.

I THINK the information giving Robert a deceased wife Jean is wrong; I can find no marriage or death for a Jean/Jane Brebber of the correct age group. However, his mother's name was Jane; perhaps it means that Captain John was the husband of Jean?? Robert wasn't a regular soldier so is less likely to have married in England or abroad. (In 1911 he was a clerk in a Nautical and Electrical Factory in Glasgow.) Happy to be proved wrong!! |

Robert is listed on the Glasgow Roll of Honour at 12 Vinicombe Street,
and the only death of a female named J Brebber I can find is in Glenmuick, Tulloch and Glengairn, Aberdeenshire:
Jane Brebber (widow of Captain John Brebber, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) 1923 March Fourteenth, at Wellington Villa, Ballater, age 81.
The death was registered by her son J. Brebber, 162 New City Road, Glasgow. _________________ Ken |

Thanks Ken! The 1911 census has Robert at Vinicombe Street but, as it was an Ancestry transcription, I wasn't sure it was right. Thanks for the confirmation. Also for Jane's death info; she must have gone back to Glenmuick some time after 1901 when she was in Glasgow.
Thanks Anne! I couldn't find his effects record (or I ran out of time on a "free" weekend!). That confirms he wasn't married.
After posting here, I found a six year old Ancestry message board with a family tree of the Lindsay family (his mother was a Lindsay). They had no info about the fate of Robert but some stuff about the rest of the family. |

Robert Brebber is also commemorated on the memorial for Wilton Church, Glasgow which is situated in Kelvin Stevenson Church (formed through amalgamation of several congregations).
I love this forum!! |
