This church is now up for sale and this and the other memorials must be considered to be at significant risk because no home has yet been found for them. See separate post on at-risk memorials.

The present key-holder was very helpful and mentioned that his uncle is on this memorial.

1960 Private Maxwell Cannon, 1/5th KOSB

Enlisted 2nd October 1914, 2/5th KOSB
Transferred to 1/5th KOSB and was one of the original contingent which landed at Gallipoli on 6th June 1915
Died of dysentery onboard H.M. Hospital Ship Gascon en route to Alexandria, Egypt

Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of this young man.

The gentleman in blue in the photo is the current key holder (nephew of Maxwell Cannon listed on the memorial).

Looks promising, as long as the new owner doesn't agree with the sometimes heard 'modern' idea that military items such as Regimental Colours should not be displayed in a place of worship.

Pte. ROBERT M. ARMOUR, K.O.S.B.
Robert Merry Armour – age 24 – Private (4412 & 241124) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown. He was a Linotype Operator at the “Courier and Herald” Office in Dumfries when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and later served in Egypt and Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza. After 3 months in hospital in Malta he rejoined his Battalion in France. He was killed near Ypres.
Born 1894 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Helen (Hope) Armour of “Meninwood” Pleasance Avenue, Maxwelltown.
Killed in Action on 10 October 1918 and buried in Zantvoorde British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.


SERGT. WILLIAM BEAULY, K.O.S.B.
William Beauly – age 39 – Lance Corporal (241175) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William worked at Troqueer Mills when he enlisted in the 1/5th KOSB in September 1915. He joined the 1st KOSB in France in March 1918.
Born 1878 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Alexander Agent (Milroy) Beauly of Dumfries. Husband of Sarah Jane (McKie) Beauly of 1 Welldale Terrace, Maxwelltown who he married in 1909 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 15 May 1918 and buried in Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, France. Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.


Pte. ANDREW BELL, K.O.S.B.
Andrew Bell – age 31 – Private (9102) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Andrew was serving with the 1st KOSB in India. By 1914 he was a reservist and was mobilised to the 2nd KOSB, arriving in France on 15 August 1914. He was wounded at Mons at the end of August. Andrew was wounded (for the 6th time) in 1918 and had just rejoined his battalion when he was killed.
Born 1886 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Robert Bell and of Margaret Bell of 187 High Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 17 September 1918 and buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

James died on pneumonia in the Thomas Hope Hospital in Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Born 1898 in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Maggie Bell of Langshawburn, Eskdalemuir.
Died on Service on 27 April 1919 and buried in Langholm Cemetery.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir War Memorial.

Robert Bie – age 50 – Captain: Merchant Marine.
Robert died after suffering a heart attack on board his ship the S.S. Laomedon in the North Atlantic.
Born 1868 at Neptune Cottage, Rockcliffe, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of Captain Charles and Isabella (Black) Bie.
Husband of Annie Barron (Black) Bie of Cardoness Street, Dumfries who he married in 1901 at Kelvin, Glasgow.
Died on 13 June 1918 and buried in Ottawa, Canada.
Also named on the Colvend Parish War Memorial and on the Dumfries War Memorial.

Alfred Blyth – age 20 – Private (56358) 155th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Formerly Private (4324) King's Own Scottish Borderers. He joined the 1/5th KOSB at Gallipoli in November 1915.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of Elizabeth Blyth of 14 Greyfriars Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. JAMES BOYLE, K.O.S.B.
James Edward Boyle – age 28 – Private (1862 & 240494) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1888 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Margaret Boyle. Husband of Ruth (Fildes) Boyle of Brewery Street, Dumfries who he married in 1913 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. ROBERT BROWN, LANK. YEO.
Robert Allison Brown – age 25 – Private (295900) 12th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Formerly Private (2235) 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Robert was a painter to trade, working in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry at Gallipoli in October 1915. In January 1917 the Ayrshire and the Lanarkshire Yeomanry were amalgamated as the 12th RSF and in May 1918 they moved to France. Robert died in the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at St. Omer.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jane (Allison) Brown of 10 Greyfriars Street, Dumfries. Died of Wounds on 6 July 1918 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial both as Trooper Robert Brown Lan. Yeo. and as Private R. A. Brown R.S.F.


L/Cpl. JAMES M. CALLANDER, K.O.S.B.
James Callander – age 33 – Lance Corporal (8026) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a signalman with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at the Cairn Valley Junction near Dumfries when, as a reservist, he was mobilised. He landed with the 2nd KOSB at Le Havre in August 1914 as part of the original British Expeditionary Force.
Born 1882 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Isabella (Tinnan) Callander of East Cluden, Holywood, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Martha Callander of 8 David Street, Maxwelltown who he married in 1908 in Holywood.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Holywood Parish War Memorial and on the G&SW Railway memorial now in Ayr Station.


Pte. GEORGE CAMPBELL, R.E.
George Campbell – age 38 – Sapper (424405) 98th Light Railway Train Crew, Royal Engineers.
George had been employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company for more than 19 years and lived with his wife in Irish Street, Dumfries. He and about 60 other Train Crew were drowned in the sinking of the Troopship “Aragon” outside Alexandria Harbour.
Two of his brothers, Thomas and Walter, had been killed earlier in the war.
Born 1879 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jane Campbell. Husband of Mary Jane (Rodgers) Campbell of 50 Irish Street, Dumfries who he married in 1898 in Dumfries.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 31 December 1917 and named on the Chatby Memorial, Alexandria, Egypt.
Also named on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station and, together with his brothers, on the Dumfries War Memorial.

Maxwell Cannon – age 17 – Private (1960) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, Maxwell was a millwright when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but contracted dysentery and died onboard H.M. Hospital Ship “Gascon” en route to Alexandria.
Born 1898 in Dumfries. Son of James and Agnes (Dalling) Cannon of 1 Maxwell Place, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 1 September 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. JOHN DUFF, K.O.S.B.
John Duff – age 36 – Private (23577) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a tailor's cutter in Maxwelltown when he enlisted in May 1916. He was initially report missing and then a prisoner of war before his death was finally confirmed a year later.
Born 1881 in Broughton, Salford, Manchester. Son of David and Andrewina or Andrina (Johnstone) Duff of Gasstown, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. FRANK DUNLOP, SCOT. RIF.
Frank Dunlop – age 20 – Private (41917) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Frank was employed at the Arrol-Johnston Motor Works at Heathhall, Dumfries when he enlisted in July 1917. He had been in France for just seven months.
Born 1898 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel and Mary Ann Dunlop.
Killed in Action on 6 October 1918 and buried in Sucrerie Cemetery, Ablain-St. Nazaire, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


CAPT. JAMES J. DYKES, K.O.S.B.
James Johnstone Dykes – age 29 – Captain: 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was qualified doctor and dentist and had studied medicine at Edinburgh University and at the Edinburgh Dental hospital. L.D.S., R.C.S. in 1907. L.R.C.P.&S. (Edinburgh) L.R.F.P.S. (Glasgow) – both in 1911. He worked with his father in the family dental practice in Dumfries and as a dental surgeon in the Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary. A long-standing member of the 5th KOSB, he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Mary S. Dykes, of Dumfries. Husband of Elizabeth Haining (Robison) Dykes, of Westfield, Maxwelltown, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 12 July 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Pte. JOHN FITZSIMON, K.O.S.B.
John Fitzsimon – age 30 – Private (1879) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had for many years worked at Troqueer Mill and latterly was a chauffeur. He was a well known local bowler. He enlisted in October 1914 but while in training he suffered a perforated gastric ulcer and died in Alloa Hospital, Clackmannanshire.
Born 1884 in Dalry, Ayrshire. Son of John and Agnes (Denniston) Fitzsimon. Husband of Janet (Neisham) Fitzsimon of Renwick Bank, Mill Road, Maxwelltown who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 30 October 1914 and buried in Troqueer Cemetery.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.


Pte. ADAM FULTON, CAMERONS.
Adam Fulton – age 21 – Private (S/14190) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Adam was working on his father's farm when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1894 in Tinwald, Dumfriesshire. Son of Archibald and Maggie Fulton of Tinwald House.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Tinwald Parish War Memorial in Amisfield Village.


Pte. JAMES GARDINER, LANK. YEO.
James Gardiner – age 18 – Private (1017) Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
James was a butcher employed in his father's shop in Queensberry Street, Dumfries, when he enlisted in December 1914. He arrived at Gallipoli in September 1915 but contracted enteric fever and was evacuated to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of George Maxwell Gardiner and Mary (Pagan) Gardiner of 4 Robertvale Terrace, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 26 November 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


L/Cpl. JAMES C. GEDDES, CAMERONS.
John Coupland Geddes – age 21 – Lance Corporal (S/15447) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was working as a clogger when he enlisted in November 1914. He went to France in July 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of the late David Geddes and of Mary (Little) Geddes of 53 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Sgt. SAMUEL GLADSTONE, K.O.S.B.
Samuel Gladstone – age 43 – Sergeant (7904) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Samuel was a compositor with J. Maxwell and Son, Printers and Publishers of Dumfries. As a reservist he was mobilised in August 1914 and joined his battalion in France in August 1915.
Born 1874 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel and Mary (Learmont) Gladstone. Husband of the late Elizabeth Crocket Johnston of 2 Park Terrace, Dumfries who he married in 1897 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, and who died in 1906. Samuel re-married to Mary Stuart (Lorraine) Gladstone in 1908 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

Andrew Graham – age 39 – Private (CMT/1270) 621st Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps.
Andrew was a motor van driver with Johnstone's Aerated Water Manufacturers and lived at College Street, Maxwelltown. He went to France in August 1914. Andrew died in hospital in Liverpool after a long illness.
Born c.1878 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew and Jane (Grierson) Graham. Husband of Isabella Ann (Scott) Graham of Douglas Bank, Locharbriggs, Dumfries who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
Died on Service on 21 March 1917 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


2nd Lt. WILLIAM J. HAINING, K.O.S.B.
William John (Jack) Haining – age 22 – Second Lieutenant: 3rd Battalion attached to 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Jack” enlisted as a Private in September 1914. He was selected for Officer training and commissioned in October 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of the late George Haining and of Wilhelmina (Boyd) Haining of 3 Gordon Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 January 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the St. Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


Pte. WILLIAM HOLDEN, K.O.S.B.
William Holden – age 57 – Private (3071) 2/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was on the KOSB National Reserve and had formerly served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers
He died, suddenly, in the Dumfries Royal Infirmary.
Born 1858 in Dumfries. Son of William and Margaret (Gillies) Holden. Husband of Jane (Harrow) Holden of 16 Greyfriars Street, Dumfries who he married in 1883 in Dumfries.
Died on Service on 20 May 1915 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. JOHN JOHNSTONE, K.O.S.B.
John Johnston – age 43 – Private (1917) “B” Company, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was employed at Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 where he was wounded and contracted enteric fever. He was evacuated to hospital in Malta before being invalided to the UK for further hospital treatment. It was June 1916 before he was fit to return to active service but while at Catterick Camp in Yorkshire he suffered appendicitis from which he died in Greenbank Hospital at Darlington, County Durham.
Born 1873 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Johnston. Husband of Janet (Saunders) Johnston of 185 St. Michael Street, Dumfries who he married in 1892 in Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 16 July 1916 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


Pte. TOM KERR, K.O.S.B.
Though to be:
Thomas John Redmond Kerr – age 25 – Private (65953) 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment.
Formerly Private (30500) Norfolk Regiment.
Thomas was a baker in Dumfries when he enlisted in October 1915, initially in the Army Service Corps. He went to France in May 1917 to join the Norfolk Regiment before being posted to the Royal Fusiliers in June 1917.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of James and Margaret (Stewart) Kerr of St Michael's House and of "Strowan," Park Road, Maxwelltown.
Missing in Action on 1 December 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial as PTE. THOMAS J. KERR, R.FUS.

William was educated at Glasgow Street School in Maxwelltown and was a joiner in his father's business when he enlisted in October 1914. He joined the 1/5th KOSB in Palestine at the end of 1916.
Born 1898 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer. Son of John and Janet (Craig) Kirkpatrick of “Elizafield”, Terregles Street, Maxwelltown.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jesusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on an individual plaque in Greyfriars Church as Sgt.Willie T Kirkpatrick, 4th Reserve Battalion, KOSB.

Fred had served his apprentice ship as a motor mechanic at Penman's Queensberry Motor Works in Dumfries. He was working in Glasgow, and living at 44 Westend Park Street, when in March 1914, he enlisted in the Territorial Force as Sapper (9053) in the Scottish Airline Signalling Company, Royal Engineers. In April 1915 he re-enlisted in the Regular Army at Hitchen, Hertfordshire as Driver (77220) Royal Engineers and went out to Egypt in August 1915. In April 1916 he moved to Basra but contracted dysentery and died in the 41st Field Ambulance.
Born 1895 in Keir, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Cairns) Lee and of Alexander Lister Lee of Fair, Selkirk and of 121 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 17 June 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


Cpl. JOHN A. MARTIN, K.O.S.B.
John Allan Martin – age 26 – Lance Corporal (38418) 8th Battalion, The King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry).
Formerly Pte.(21747) King's Own Scottish Borderers and Pte.(29242) Royal Scots.
John was employed by the Hepworth Company in Dumfries as a clothier before becoming a manager of a branch in Glasgow. He enlisted in the KOSB but was posted to the Royal Scots in October 1915 and then was transferred to the KOYLI.
Born 1890 in New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Greig and Sarah (Allan) Martin of 3 Ashfield Cottages, Glasgow Road, Maxwelltown.
Missing in Action on 1 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also listed on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial as Martin, John A. L/C. K.O.Y.L.I.


L/Cpl. JAMES MAXWELL, CAMERONS.
James Maxwell – age 21 – Lance Corporal (S/13564) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James enlisted in September 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
He was promoted in September 1917.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of John and Agnes Maxwell of 81 English Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 21 February 1918 and buried in Windmill British Cemetery, Monchy-le-Preux, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

L/Cpl. JOSEPH MAXWELL, GORDONS.
Joseph Maxwell – age 31 – Lance Corporal (291510) 1/4th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Joseph was posted initially to the 1st Battalion before the 1/4th Battalion.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Agnes (Craig) Maxwell of 194 St. Michael Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 26 October 1918 and buried in Maing Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. JAMES MUNDELL, K.O.S.B.
James Edgar Mundell – age 19 – Private (1066) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an apprentice jeweller in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but contracted dysentery and died onboard the Hospital ship “Sicilia” en route from Gallipoli to Malta.
Born 1896 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of James Bald Mundell and Mary Ann (Edgar) Mundell of Nunfield, Edinburgh Road, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service and buried at Sea on 26 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


Pte. ROBERT McDONALD, CAMERONS.
Robert McDonald – age 27 – Private (223013) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Formerly Private (5753) Lovat Scouts, Private (S/26892) 1st Cameron Highlanders and Private (378010) 2/10th The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Robert was a hairdresser who served his time in Dumfries before moving to West Calder in West Lothian. He enlisted in Lovat's Scouts in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Born 1891 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Grace McDonald of 113 St Michael's Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 25 October 1918 and buried in Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the West Calder War Memorial.


Pte. THOMAS McEwan, K.O.S.B.
Thomas John McEwen – age 35 – Private (8451 & 201404) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Thomas was a gardener living with his wife and child in Glenlee Cottage, Kells.
Born 1882 in St Michaels Street, Dumfries. (Note: The Birth Register has McKune)
Son of David and Mary (Campbell) McEwen of Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire. Husband of Isabella (McMorrine) McEwen of 145 High Street, Dumfries who he married in 1902 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 2 November 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and the Kells Parish War Memorial in New Galloway.


Pte. JAMES McKEAND, CAMERONS.
James McKeand – age 25 – Private (S/20470) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was employed at the Motherwell Bridge Company when he enlisted in there in September 1914 as Private (4096) in the Gordon Highlanders. He gave his next of kin as his father William of 8 Wallace Street, Dumfries. However one month later he was discharged due to defective teeth. He obviously reapplied and was accepted by the Camerons. He reportedly had almost 4 years of service, 3 of those in France. He was gassed in March 1918 and had only just returned to France when he was killed.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of William and Mary McKeand of 8 Wallace Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 2 October 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Motherwell War Memorial.

Pte. JAMES McQUEEN, K.O.S.B.
James McQueen – age 37 – Private (24966) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was working in his father's Tobacconist business in Friars Vennel, Dumfries when he enlisted in June 1916. His wife Agnes had been an assistant in the shop. He went to France in February 1917. He was wounded on 16 January and had a foot amputated but he died in the 4th General Hospital at Dannes Camiers.
Born 1880 in Dumfries. Son of Henry and Elizabeth (Wylie) McQueen of 18 Maxwell Street, Maxwelltown. Husband of Agnes (King) McQueen of who he married in 1916 in Dumfries while he was a Private in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, KOSB.
Died of Wounds on 22 January 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.


Pte. JAMES E. McQUEEN, K.O.S.B.
James Edgar McQueen – age 19 – Private (28523) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed as a clothier in Dumfries when he enlisted.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of James and Grace (Edgar) McQueen of Parkfoot, Edinburgh Road, Dumfries and of Glencarrick, Duncow, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 19 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. JOHN NEILSON, R.F.A.
John Neilson – age 21 – Gunner (103910) “C” Battery, 98th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, John was a linotype operator at the “Standard” when he enlisted in August 1915. He trained at Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow before he went to Salonica in March 1916. He contracted malaria and dysentery and died in the No.28 General Hospital.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Donald and Maggie Neilson of 9 Kirkowen Street, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 29 October 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. JOHN RICHARDSON, K.O.S.B.
John Richardson – age 19 – Private (2642 & 240844) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 in Noblehill, Dumfries. Son of John and Agnes Jane (Tait) Richardson of Dalston Bank, Greenbrae, Dumfries and formerly of Glencaple.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


Pte. MALCOLM RUSSELL, K.O.S.B.
Malcolm Stark Russell – age 23 – Private (44165) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Private (1325) Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Malcolm had been employed in a dental surgery in Dumfries when he enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of the late Alexander Russell and of Robertina Russell of 10 Murray Place, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.
