Further info from Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial.

"1018446 Lance Corporal (5th Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment) David Pool (b.1888) of Blaine Lake died 19180921 of sepsis arising from shoulder and thigh wounds incurred more than a month earlier on the Somme and is buried at Annan cemetery, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. David homesteaded NW24-45-8-W3 in the Windsor Lake district northwest of Blaine Lake before enlisting at North Battleford in 1916.

Brother of W Pool. They were the sons of John and Margaret Agnes Pool of Annan. The brothers, one a volunteer, the other a conscript, died exactly a week apart very late in the war.

1914 - 1918

ROBERT ANDERSON, KOSB

Robert Anderson – age 26 – Private (18653) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915. He later served with the 6th KOSB in France before re-joining the 1st Battalion.
Born 1890 in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of Christopher and Margaret (Dirom) Anderson of Brydekirk, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Agnes (Notman) Anderson who he married in 1913 in Dornock.
Missing in Action on 21 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Brydekirk Parish War Memorial.


THOMAS H. ARMSTRONG GH.
Thomas H. Armstrong – age 32 – Private (10010) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Thomas had been a farm servant when he enlisted in 1905 and served with the 2nd Gordons in India. In August 1914 the battalion was in Cairo and returned to England before landing at Zeebrugge in October 1914. Thomas was wounded twice and evacuated to the UK. After his recovery he returned to the front but was wounded again and died in the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1885 in Dornock. Son of the late John and Ellen Armstrong of Lowthertown, Eastriggs, Dornock. Brother of John of Killochan Station Girvan and of a sister, Mrs Barbara Thompson of 11 Scott's Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 22 August 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.


DAVID ARMSTRONG, CANADIANS.
David Armstrong – age 24 – Private (229384) 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
David was a labourer and was serving with the 90th Regiment of Militia when he enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba in June 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia to England in April 1916 and landed in France in August. He was wounded in the head and leg at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 and was treated at the 14th General Hospital before being evacuated to the St. Luke's Bradford War Hospital, Yorkshire where he died from a cerebellar abscess and meningitis in September 1917.
Born 1891 at Moorhouse, Dornock as David Davidson Armstrong. Son of the late Walter Armstrong and of Margaret (Davidson) Armstrong of 3 East Road, Eastriggs, Dornock.
Died of Wounds on 16 September 1917 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Dornock Cemetery.


DAVID CLOWE, KOSB.
David Clowe – age 22 – Private (13081) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1894 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late George Clowe and of Catherine (Graham) Clowe of Bellevue, Eastriggs, Dornock.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Simon Clowe – age 20 – Private (13672) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Simon landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1896 in Lawesknowe Railway Cottage, Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late George Clowe and of Catherine (Graham) Clowe of Bellevue, Eastriggs, Dornock.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
A third brother, George Clowe served as Private (17677) in the 1st KOSB and joined his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He later transferred to the Labour Corps as Private 567102.

JAMES DIROM, MGC.
James Dirom – age 19 – Private (119683) 62nd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
James enlisted in Carlisle and was allocated as Private (35871) to the East Surrey Regiment. He was posted to the 62nd MGC in France but died of wounds in the 48th Casualty Clearing Station. James was buried in the French National Cemetery at Epernay but was re-interred at Terlincthum in July 1964.
Born 1899 in Dornock. Son of David and Catherine (McKnight) of Lowthertown, Eastriggs, Dornock.
Died of Wounds on 1 August 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.


WILLIAM ECCLESTONE, KOSB.
William Eccleston – age 28 – Sergeant (16360) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 William was a gardener and living with his wife and child at White Birches, Marsh Brooks, Church Stretton, Shropshire. He was living in the Annan area when he enlisted in November 1914.
Born 1888 in Chorlton, Manchester. Son of John and Annie Eccleston. Husband of Kate (Porter) Eccleston, of 5 Marchamley, Shrewsbury, Shropshire who he married in 1909 in Fylde, Lancashire.
Missing in Action on 1 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


EDWARD GORDON, KOSB.
Edward Gordon – age 21 – Private (23678) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of Edward and Margaret (Ferguson) Gordon of Dornock.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.


WILLIAM M. HILL, RGA.
William MacDuff Hill – age 29 – Gunner (63685) 156th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
William was fixing telephone wires in trees when he was hit by shrapnel. He died 3 hours later in the 36th Field Ambulance in Longueval.
Born 1887 in Dornock. Son of David and Elizabeth (Johnstone) Hill of Wyllies, Dornock and of Bowerhouses, Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire.
Died of Wounds on 5 October 1916 and buried in Longueval Road Cemetery, Somme, France.

Robert Jackson – age 29 – Lance Corporal (33026) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert was living in Larkhall, Lanarkshire when enlisted.
Born 1887 at Courthill, Keir, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert Jackson (a blacksmith) and of Charlotte Purves (Lindsay) Jackson of Keir, Dumfriesshire, of Halket Leathes Smithy in Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire, of the Barjarg Estate, Keir and of Butterdales Cottage, Eastriggs.
(Charlotte died in Dornock in 1940 aged 79)
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


JAMES G. MUIRHEAD, RMLI.
James Graham Muirhead – age 20 – Private (CH/17214) HMS Cressy, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
James was educated at Annan Academy and was a solicitor's clerk in Annan when he joined the marines in October 1911. He was serving on the armoured cruiser “Cressy” when she was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U 9. The cruisers Aboukir and Hogue were sunk in the same attack.
Born 1894 in Dornock. Son of Alexander and Elspeth (Graham) Muirhead of Lowthertown, Eastriggs, Dornock,
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 22 September 1914 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial.


JAMES MUIRHEAD GH.
James Muirhead – age 29 – Private (292461) 1/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, transferred as Private (632113) to the 245th Divisional Employment Company, Labour Corps.
James went to France in November 1915.
Born 1889 in Lowthertown, Dornock. Son of the late John and Jane (Reay) Muirhead. Nephew of William Stewart of Lowthertown, Dornock.
In 1891 and 1901 Jane and her sons lived with her uncle William Stewart. Jane died in 1903.
Died on Service on 7 November 1918 and buried in Dornock Cemetery. (CWG)

WILLIAM S. MUIRHEAD CANADIANS.
William Stewart Muirhead, Military Medal – age 31 – Private (75744) 29th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William was working as a grocer when he enlisted in Vancouver, British Columbia in November 1914. He named his uncle William Stewart of Lowthertown as his next of kin. He was awarded the Military Medal.
Born 1887 in Lowthertown, Dornock. Son of John and Jane (Reay) Muirhead. Nephew of William Stewart of Lowthertown, Dornock.
In 1891 and 1901 Jane and her sons lived with her uncle William Stewart. Jane died in 1903.
Died on Service on 18 November 1918 and buried in Dornocl Cemetery. (CWG)

James and William both died of influenza at the home of Thomas Reay (their uncle) at 56 Station Road, St.Luke's, Wallsend, Northumberland and are buried in the family plot in Dornock Cemetery.

DAVID MURRAY, KOSB.
David Murray – age 28 – Private (18286) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David had spent some three years in Australia. He enlisted in February 1915 and joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in July 1915. He was wounded there and died on board the Hospital Ship “Nevasa”.
Born 1886 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Annie Lowther (Dobie) Murray of Irvington, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Janet Bell (Thomson) Murray of Church Place, Dornock who he married in 1908 in Dornock.
Died of Wounds on 28 August 1915 and buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.


THOMAS W. McCUBBIN, HLI.
Thomas William McCubbin – age 27 – Private (37110) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Thomas had been a time keeper at the Arrol-Johnstone Motor Works at Heathhall in Dumfries when he enlisted at the outbreak of war. Initially he was employed in the Army Pay Office in Hamilton, Lanarkshire before he was posted to the HLI in December 1916. He went to France in February 1917.
Born 1889 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Catherine (Burgess) McCubbin of Park House, Dornock. Husband of Helen (McLennan) McCubbin of Camphill, Bothwell, Lanarkshire who he married in 1916 in Bothwell,
Killed in Action on 23 September 1917 and buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-le-Grand, Somme, France.
Also named on the Bothwell War Memorial.


EDWARD McLACHLAN, KOSB.
Edward McLauchlan – age 21 – Private (2105 & 240620) 1/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Edward enlisted in October 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine and was killed at Gaza.
Born 1896 in Kirkcudbright. Son of Henrietta (McLauchlan) Murray and step-son of James Gordon Murray of Stapleton Grange, Dornock who had married in Kirkcudbright in 1898.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


DAVID POOL, CANADIANS.
David Pool – age 30 – Lance Corporal (1018446) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
David was educated at Annan Academy and he and his brother William had emigrated to Canada by 1906. David was farming at Blaine Lake in Saskatchewan when he enlisted in North Battleford in May 1916. He was wounded on the Somme in August 1918 and died in hospital in Salford, Manchester.
Born 1886 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Margaret Agnes (Kirkpatrick) Pool of Woodhead Farm, Dornock.
Died of Wounds on 21 September 1918 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Annan Cemetery.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial.

William was educated at Annan Academy and in 1901 William was a lawyer's clerk. He and his brother David had emigrated to Canada by 1906 and William was an elevator man in Blaine, Saskatchewan when he was drafted in December 1917. He was killed by machine gun fire during an attack near Epincy.
Born 1884 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Margaret Agnes (Kirkpatrick) Pool of Woodhead Farm, Dornock.
Killed in Action on 28 September 1918 and buried in Haynecourt British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial.


CHARLES VEITCH, MM RFA.
Charles Irvine Veitch, Military Medal – age 22 – Gunner (85191) “A” Battery, 82nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Charles was employed by Glasgow and South-Western Railway Company as a ticket collector at South Beach, Ayr when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with his Brigade in France in July 1915. He was awarded a M.M. in 1916 for conspicuous bravery in repairing telephone lines under heavy shell fire.
Born 1895 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Dinah (Atkinson) Veitch, of Eastriggs, Dornock.
Died of Wounds on 14 March 1917 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the G&SW Railway Company Memorial now in Ayr Station.

1939 - 1945

JAMES BURNETT
.
James Burnett – age 36 – Guardsman (2699454) Scots Guards.
James died of his wounds while a prisoner of war and was buried in Appeldoorn Municipal Cemetery in the Netherlands. He was re-interred in Arnhem in October 1945.
Born 1908 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Agnes Jane (Dinwoodie) Burnett of Westhills, Eastriggs. Husband of Margaret Burnett, of 23 Vancouver Road, Eastriggs.
Died of Wounds on 6 December 1944 and buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.


KENNETH G. COMRIE.
Kenneth Gordon Comrie – age 27 – Major (110479) Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
Kenneth was educated at Eastriggs School, Annan and Dumfries Academies and at the Royal (Dick) College of Veterinary Surgeons in Edinburgh from where he qualified in 1938. He was awarded his B.Sc. From Edinburgh University in 1939. He was commissioned in February 1940 and went to the Middle East in November 1942. He was killed by shell fire while assisting the 17th Indian Mule Company at San Michele near Monte Cassino.
Born 1916 in Sidi Salem, Egypt. Son of Leslie John and Catherine (Bickerton) Comrie of Sidi Salem, Egypt and of The Crescent, Eastriggs. Husband of Isobel Susan (Brebner) Comrie who he married in Hollingbourne, Kent in 1940.
Killed in Action on 12 February 1944 and buried in Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the RCVS memorial in Edinburgh and on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University.

LESLIE C. COMRIE

Leslie Cameron Comrie – age 32 – Lieutenant (186389) Royal Corps of Signals.
Leslie was awarded his B.Sc. from Edinburgh University in 1932 and became an entomologist in the Zoology Department at University College, Dundee from 1935 -1938 before he left to study at Cambridge University prior to taking up a post with the Indian Tea Association at the Tocklai Experimental Station, Cinnamara in Assam in 1938. He was commissioned in May 1941 but died as the result of an accident while serving in the Arakan, Burma.
Born 1911 in Egypt. Son of Leslie John and Catherine (Bickerton) Comrie of Sidi Salem, Egypt and of The Crescent, Eastriggs. Husband of Mona Kinnear (Adamson) Comrie of Sheffield who he married in St. Clement, Dundee in 1938.
(Mona qualified M.B. Ch.B from St Andrew's in 1940 and became a doctor in Dundee.)
Died on Active Service on 17 June 1943 and buried in Chittagong War Cemetery, Bangladesh.
Also named on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University.

ROBERT C. P. CARMONT.
Robert Carthon Patrick Carmont – age 28 – Bombardier (925570) 130 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Robert was a clerk in the Annan branch of the British Linen Bank when he enlisted. He was buried in Sahmaw War Cemetery in Burma (an original 'Chindit' cemetery) but was re-interred in Taukkyan in July 1954.
Born 1916 in Kilmun, Argyllshire. Son of James H. Carmont (writer) and of Eleanor Carmont of Glasgow. Nephew of Lord Carmont of Edinburgh, of the late Canon Robert Carmont and of Miss Elizabeth Carmont, both of Auchencaer, Eastriggs.
Killed in Action on 15 August 1944 and buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Mayanmar (Burma)
Also named on the British Linen Bank memorial in Edinburgh.


WILLIAM CONCHIE.
William Miller Conchie – age 16 – Boy 1st Class (P/JX 170173) HMS Hood, Royal Navy.
William was educated at Eastriggs school and joined the navy when was just 15. He was home in early May before joining the battle-cruiser “Hood” at Scapa Flow. The “Hood” exploded and sank after being hit by shells from the German battleship “Bismark” during the Battle of the Denmark Straits.
Born 1924 in Dornock. Son of the late Fawcett Greenwood Conchie and of Lizzie Scott (Miller) Conchie (later Mrs Black) of Pretoria Road, Eastriggs.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 May 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


JAMES COWAN.
James Cowan – age 23 – Gunner (325665) 155 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
James was a plumber in Annan when he enlisted. The 155th (Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment R.A. arrived in Malaya in October 1941 but by February 1942 they were on Singapore Island and became prisoners of war. One group, including James, was taken to Formosa (Taiwan) where they worked in the infamous Kinkaseki Copper Mine. James died there but was re-interred at Sai Wan in July 1947.
Born 1919 in Dornock. Son of the late John M. Cowan and of Jessie (Warwick) Cowan of 15 Ladysmith Road, Eastriggs.
Died on Service on 8 February 1943 and buried in Sai Wan War Cemetery, Hong Kong, China.


THOMAS DALTON.
Thomas Dalton – age 25 – Private (2933816) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
Born 1918 in Dornock. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Johnstone) Dalton, of 19 Dunedin Road, Eastriggs.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1943 and buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Tunisia.
