JOHN HYSLOP.
John Davidson Hyslop – age 32 – Driver (T/91970) 50th Infantry Brigade Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
John had been a conductor with the Caledonian Omnibus Company when he enlisted in the RASC. He went to France with the BEF and was evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940. He was then posted to Malaya and became a prisoner of war after the fall of Singapore in February 1942. He was sent to work on the Burma – Siam Railway and died in the base camp at Kanburi in Thailand. He was buried in the cemetery there but was re-interred in Kanchanaburi in January 1946.
Born 1911 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. Son of John and Margaret (Davidson) Hyslop of Ashbank, Calcutta Road, Eastriggs.
Died on Service on 5 December 1943 and buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand.


WILLIAM J. T. IRVING.
William John Thomson Irving – age 24 – Second Lieutenant (89371) 76 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
William was educated at Annan and Dumfries Academies and served his apprenticeship as a solicitor in Annan. He qualified as a law agent at Edinburgh University and joined the office of Clark, Dewar, Oliver and Webster in Arbroath. He was commissioned in the local Territorial unit on 7 June 1939 and went to France with the British Expeditionary Force as part of the 51st Highland Division in January 1940.
Born 1915 in Dornock. Son of the late George Irving and of Elizabeth (Scott) Irving of Tulliesfield and of Albie Croft, Annan.
(George died on 7 June 1940 aged 81, just three days before his son)
Killed in Action on 10 June 1940 and buried in Hornoy Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Arbroath War Memorial.


ROBERT MAXWELL.
Robert Maxwell – age 27 – Trooper (7914789) 3rd The King's Own Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps.
Born 1917 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Robert Maxwell and of Jessie Mackay (Kirkpatrick) Maxwell (later Mrs. Robert Inglis Drennan) of Stapleton Cottage, Annan. Husband of Fairley Bradford (Williamson) Maxwell of Stapleton Cottage, Annan who he married in 1941 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 12 June 1944 and buried in Bolsena War Cemetery, Italy.


JACK E. PHILLIPS.
John Ernest Phillips – age 21 – Flight Sergeant (617380) 44 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Jack's Hampden bomber took off from RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire for a raid on Cologne but the aircraft crashed in the North Sea off the Essex coast.
Born 1919 in Gorbals, Glasgow. Son of John Ernest Mungo Phillips and Beatrice Mary (Farley) Phillips of Eastriggs.
Killed in Action on 1 September 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Jack's father, who was born in Glasgow, had been a seaman based in New York when he enlisted in the Canadian Army in July 1917. He and Beatrice married in Greenwich, London at the end of 1918.

HARRY PITT.
Henry Winchester Pitt – age 11 – Ordinary Seaman (P/JX 370092) HMS Holcombe, Royal Navy.
Harry was educated at Eastriggs School and served time as painter in Annan. He was a member of Home Guard until he enlisted in 1942. The destroyer “Holcombe” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-593 off the coast of Algeria.
Born 1923 in Carlisle as Harry W. Pitt. Son of Henry and Mary (Cruickshank) Pitt of Brooklyn, Annan Road, Eastriggs.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 12 December 1943 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


DAVID S. SCOTT.
David Stevenson Scott – age 21 – Private (14638286) 1/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment.
David was educated at Mount Pleasant School, Rigg and went on to farm work at Mossband, Gretna before becoming a motor driver with Raynor Bros. in Nottingham. He enlisted in 1943 and landed with his battalion in France just after D-day as the Machine Gun Battalion of the 51st Highland Division. He was buried at Bedburg near Cologne but was re-interred in Reichswald in October 1946.
Born 1924 at Springfield, Gretna Green. Son of James and Margaret Scott of 20 Annan Road, Eastriggs.
Killed in Action on 26 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.


JOHN SHANNON.
John McGinlay Shannon – age 18 – Private (14080890) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John died from bullet wounds but in the records the cause is not explained. He was originally buried in the Munster Standort-Lazarette Cemetery but was re-interred in June 1947.
Born 1927 in Dornock. Son of George and Mary Ann (Robertson) Shannon of Eastriggs.
Died on Service on 28 June 1946 and buried in Munster Heath War Cemetery, Germany.


ARTHUR J. H. SHIELDS.
Arthur James Hadwin Shields – age 21 – Corporal (14851735) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
From 1945 to 1947 1st Battalion was posted on internal security duties in Palestine. Arthur died of black water fever.
Born 1926 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of John Hadwin Shields and Elizabeth Janet (Graham) Shields, of Eastriggs.
Died on Service on 22 November 1947 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.

DAVID W. SMITH.
David William Smith – age 38 – Guardsman (2697039) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 1904 in Dornock. Son of Margaret Smith. Husband of Helen (Carmichael) Smith of Langholm, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1932 in Langholm.
Killed in Action on 30 April 1943 and buried in Oued Zarga War Cemetery, Tunisia.


ROBERT VALLANCE.
Robert Vallance – age 21 – Sergeant (3190429) 7th/10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the A&SH. The 7th A&SH formed part of the 51st Highland Division in France in 1940 and suffered grievous casualties before escaping through Le Havre. It was re-formed based on the 10th Battalion who were still in Scotland and remained in the 51st Highland Division for the rest of the war.
Born 1921 in Dornock. Son of Robert and Ethel Waugh Vallance of 10 Vancouver Road, Eastriggs.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1943 and buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Tunisia.


JAMES WARWICK.
James Irving Warwick – age 20 – Able Seaman (C/JX151041) HMS Legion, Royal Navy.
James had served on HMS Exeter and HMS York before he joined the destroyer “Legion”. On 23 March the ship was badly damaged while on escort duties but managed to reach Malta. On 26 March whilst awaiting repair, the docks were the target of an air raid. “Legion” was hit by two bombs and sustained further serious damage when her forward magazine exploded. James died of his injuries.
Born 1921 in Brydkirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Sarah Janet (Irving) Warwick who married in Annan in 1918. Nephew of Mrs J. Cowan of Ladysmith Road, Eastriggs.
Died of Wounds on 26 March 1942 and buried in Malta (Cappuccini) Naval Cemetery, Malta.
