I think some form of collective approach/formal correspondence, as suggested, would be worthwhile.
It would be interesting to see what results/response was forthcoming.
I've done quite a few of the civic memorials in Perthshire and have one or two others found/on the list.
I'd actually started to draw together websites/listings of Perthshire churches but got a bit bogged down. It is a huge commitment drawing it together then thinking about making arrangements.
If there is some answer I don't mine getting there and doing the needful, most definately.
Of course there must be other denominations apart from CoS and RC?
Please update on the thoughts/progress with this one.
regards,
Mark |

I think that would be a great idea, I have already incorporated the British Legion list and list of parishes in 1918 into my own but I find that many parishes have 2 memorials. They seem to have a roll of honour written in 1918/19 timeframe and then a stone memorial in 1921/22 timeframe. All the churches in this area are kept locked so I have to get inside each one, many are closed and some sold off so that is further research needed but those that are still used for service I can only get into on Sunday (not so easy for a non-churchgoer ) or I can try to get someone to open up the church for me. Much better if I have an idea what I am looking for before I go in to make sure I don't miss anything.
When we are further along the project, I intend to contact the Dumfries Family History Society to see if they can add any other memorials to my list or offer any other advice.
In due course I intend to try and get something published in the local paper.
If anyone can help me identify where any memorials for closed churches were moved to then that would be a big help.
I am no expert on religious organisations, but there are quite a number of presbyterian churches around here, do they come under a different organisation? |

I think a few e-mails to a few organisations would be a good idea. The Church of Scotland and Free Church have head offices in Scotland but for the RC churches and perhaps Episcopal Church it would probably have to be done on a diocese by diocese basis. How about the Scouts as well?
Does David have an e-mail address through the forum that could be used rather than an individual one?
It won’t do any harm to come up with some sort of standard text for a mail in the mean time.
Any suggestions…

Is there any chance of showing the 'war memorials lists' on their own?
Perhaps next to the header for each area/with its own heading in that particular area?
Its tucked away in the civic section and I feel it would be better placed elsewhere for easier access/reference.
Its only a suggestion - any thoughts? |

The position of the lists within the civic section doesn’t really suit its purpose but there isn’t anywhere else suitable at present.
Your idea about the extra section would mean increasing the number of sections on the forum and there are already quite a few.
After updating some links within a couple of the lists last night it got me thinking about this matter. I set up a very basic free website through bravehost.com and started adding some links to the civic sites on the forum. The intention is that if I use the links between the forum and another website it may help our ratings in Google. I have only started on the civic memorials because I don’t want to have to update the website that often.
I didn’t have any big plans for the website when I set it up but perhaps it may be an idea to scrap the lists topic within the forum and move them to the website? I don’t know what others feel about moving the lists from the forum though?
The website is free so it is small and that means only basic details can be listed. We’ve got quite a lot on the lists at present.
The website option does lend itself to alphabetical lists of memorials across Scotland rather than just being regional though.
Updating the lists on a website would be no more of a burden than on a forum post and Moderators could get access to update the website.
What do others think about moving the lists from the forum?
Cheers

There is some merit in a website with nothing more than links to memorials on the forum. It should attract those who just browse and would not go near a forum. I bet it goes much faster up the google charts too!
Just as long as I don't have to maintain both.

I am receptive to that idea. If it helps with google ratings, thats a good thing.
If it is just like doing the links on the forum lists it should be okay. If not Im sure I could pick it up!
It will need some form of concensus. David/Derek any thoughts?

That wouldn't be an option. One or other but not both. Life's too short!
It looks like there is some support for the idea so we'll wait and see what others think but in the mean time if I have time I'll do some more work on the website.
Have a look yourselves at what I've done here. It's very basic so far. The colour scheme isn't great and the two boxes on the right are there because they come as part of the template.
Because it's a free site there isn't much room to change things unfortunately.
Please let me know what you think. I'm pretty thick skinned so don't hold back.
Cheers

Hi
Site looks good so far, two comments:
1. Memorials that have links look exactly the same as those that don't unless you 'hover' the mouse cursor over a link. Could you make the links a different colour from those yet to be posted?
2. When you click on a link through to the forum, it does so in the same window. Would it not be a good idea if it were to open in a new window like our forum links? Not sure if this is something you can control on your free site.

I don't think I can change the colours. I've used templates and a wizard to design the pages. I'll see if you can design your own which may give more choice.

I can't see anything which can change this within the site. If you right click on the link though it will give you this option.
I'll dig around a bit more and see what I can find.

I like the look of what you have done, I think it works. Are you going to drive this on or wait for some overall comment?

I'd like to see what Derek and David think. They are the two others who update the lists so I'd like to have their input.
I'll wait until after the weekend and see what other comments are posted. It will also give me the chance to check out editing the website a little bit more.
Regards
