Irene contacted me some weeks ago after finding my notes on this memorial in the Dumfries Reference Library. Since they had been put together back in 2009, it was a really good opportunity to up date them and with all the work that Irene had already done and with access to new stuff (Soldiers effects, for example) I think the finished results will be appreciated by the good folk of Kirkgunzeon.

The inset photo on the right is of DAVID JOHN SMITH GILLIES – age 28 – Private (24043) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers and, although the family grave is in Kirkgunzeon Churchyard and his name is on the Church Roll of honour, he is not named on the War Memorial. He is named on the Dumfries Memorial.
He was born on 23 June 1889 at Glaisters Cottage, Kirkgunzeon son of Robert and Mary (Watnell) Gillies of Sawmill Cottage, Johnstone and Lockerbie Rd. Dumfries. He was the husband of the late Helen (Bryden or Park) Gilles of 126 Greenbrae Terrace, Lockerbie Road, Dumfries who he married in 1911 in Dumfries.
David was a motor driver at the King's Arms Hotel Garage in Dumfries when he enlisted in the KOSB in March 1916. He was transferred to the RSF and posted to France in June. David was reported missing at the end of July 1916 and was found to have died of wounds as a Prisoner of War in the German Field Hospital No.2 , Rue Vauhan in St Quentin, France on 17 August 1916. David was originally buried in the hospital cemetery and after the Armistice bodies at St. Quentin were re-interred at St. Souplet British Cemetery, France.
