Derek,

What's the wee Church behind the memorial called?

Is it by any chance Roberton United Free Church?

If so, it houses 2 Memorial Windows.
1 to 4 Parishioners
1 to the nephew of Mr. R. D. MacGregor who was killed at the Somme. (Scotsman Article 13th January 1921 - will send you a copy if you want)

Note that the two Second World War names are both RAF and died within two weeks of each other.

On Dunlop's aircraft another Scot called Dunlop (also a Pilot Officer) was killed in his aircraft's crash.

William is also named on the Ettrickbridge War Memorial in Kirkhope Parish Church, Selkirkshire as:

WILLIAM SHIEL 4th KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
William Shiel – age 31 – Private (201442) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William spent his early life at Outerside, Roberton, Selkirkshire before the family moved to Kirkhope and he was working at Deanburnhaugh, Roberton, when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8505) and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza. (Source:1891&1901 census, Probate of will and Medal Roll/Card)
Born 1886 in Megget, Peebleshire. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Johnstone) Shiel of Singlie, Ettrick, Kirkhope.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
