Can anyone tell me the story of SGT. R. WELLWOOD COWAN?
He seems to be a late addition to the church memorials but is in sequence on the main memorial. I cannot find him on CWGC or SNWM.

ps Is this memorial the Glencairn Parish Memorial or the Moniaive Memorial?

Ken,
This is the Glencairn Memorial Institute, in middle of Moniaive which stands in the Parish of Glencairn; and known as Glencairn Memorial Institute or Moniaive Institute.
Regarding Robert Wellwood Cowan - he is in the Glencairn Memorial Book on pages 144-146 and down as Private Robert Cowan Service No 11125, 6th Bn The Border Reg, killed on 21/8/1915 and commemorated on the Helles Memorial. He is recorded in the Roll of Honour in his battalion history 'Glory is no Compensation'
In the Glencairn Book states from the Battalion War Diary of 21st August 1915 - "by the end of the following day when the battalion was relieved, their casulties totalled five officers and 100 men. Among the 32 men missing was Robert Cowan who was in B Company. There is no offical record of him being a sergeant as recorded on the Glencairn War Memorial - in Institute; 2 Church Plaques and roll in Wallaceton Hall".

There are 3 pages about him in the Glencairn memorial book. He was living in Wigan at the outbreak of war. His father was living in Glencairn parish at the outbreak of war.

With regards to the names, it is another of those 'depends which way you look at it' things. The parish of Glencairn has only one town, Moniaive. This memorial is in Moniaive but it states it is for the parish. There are however other memorials in the Parish in the church at Moniaive (formerly in the United Free Church, Moniaive) and in Glencairn Parish church which is in the hamlet of Kirkland.

Ken and Spoons,
Regarding Robert Cowan on the Church Plaques - 73 names with 3 columns with 18 names and the lst column has 19 names and Robert found at the end of this column.
If look on the Roll of Honour for Wallaceton Hall, same 4 columns - 3 with 18 and lst one with 19 and a different name at end of that column.
All three have same names that on Glencairn Memorial Institute - just in different orders.
So Robert's name was not added on afterwards.
The Glencairn Memorial Institute was one of three other churches in Parish of Glencairn; closed in 1920 and made into Institute, unveiled 4/12/1921. 2.- The United Free Church, Dunreggan, Moniavie, had a church plaque and this was moved into - 3. St Ninans Church, Moniaive when closed; today still in St. Ninans.
Last church is- 4.Glencarin Parish Church, Kirkland, Moniaive were second plaque unveiled and still remains there; both church plaques unveiled in May 1921, one service in morning the other in evening.

There is a family gravestone in Buittle Churchyard, Kirkcudbrightshire.

David Maben – age 24 – Private (1998) 10th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
David was employed as a tailor when he enlisted 7 January 1915 at Oaklands, South Australia. He sailed from Adelaide in April 1915 and served at Gallipoli, Egypt and France where he was killed in action. (Source: Service record at National Archives of Australia)
Born 1892 at Buittle. (Source: GRoS – Birth Register)
His service record gives Moniaive, Dumfriesshire as his birth place.
Son of John and Agnes (Davidson) Maben of Buittle Mains and of Ayr Street, Moniaive.
Killed in Action – 21 August 1916.
Commonwealth War Grave – Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

David Maben is featured in the excellent Glencairn Memorial Book where his entry covers a full two pages including mention of the grave at Buittle. He was an only son and had five sisters. After the father's death at Buittle, the family moved first to Dunreggan and then Moniaive before David went to Australia in 1911.

There are two JOHN BROWNs on the memorial and I think that this might be TROOPER JOHN BROWN.
Could someone confirm please?

John Brown – age 34 – Private (295856) 12th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was educated at Twynholm Public School and at Kirkcudbright Academy before he joined the General Post Office in London. He was working for the Reuters Telegraph Office as an accountants clerk, and living at 35 Marquis Road Stroud Green, London when he enlisted as Private (1346) in the 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry in February 1916. He joined his battalion in Egypt and was transferred with them to the 12th RSF. He served in Egypt and in Palestine until his battalion was moved to France in May 1918.

CAPT. GRD. R. ANDERSON.
Gerard Rupert Laurie Anderson – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion attached to the 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.
Gerard was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Oxford before he joined Messrs Cammell, Laird at Birkenhead, Cheshire. A keen sportsman, he was president of the University Athletics Club and won English and Scottish Championships over hurdles. He was commissioned in August 1914 and joined the 1st Cheshires in France in September. He was Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the field.
Born 1889 in Twickenham, Brentford, Middlesex. Son of the Rev. Prebendary David Anderson and of Blanche Alice May (Laurie) Anderson of 20 Chester Street, Belgrave Square, London. Grandson of Sir Emilius Laurie of Maxelton, Moniaive.
Missing in Action on 9 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Trinty College War Memorial.

PTE. IRVINE ANDERSON.
Irvine Anderson – age 19 – Private (39269) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Irvine worked in his brother Matthew's dairy in Prestwick, Ayrshire when he enlisted. He was posted to the 10th/11th Battalion but was transferred to the 12th HLI.
Born 1898 in Auchinleck, Lugar, Ayrshire. Son of William and Fanny (Hamilton) Anderson of North Street, Moniave.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1917 and buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.

PTE. ALEXDR. BARTON.
Alexander Barton – age 39 – Private (41678) 18th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander was a dyker when he enlisted in January 1915. He was posted as Private (27072) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the HLI in France. He died in one of the Casualty Clearing Stations at Westvleteren, near Ypres.
Born 1878 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of Peter and Janet (Milligan) Barton of Woodhouse Farm Glencairn. Husband of Janet Muir (Wright) Barton of Ingleston Cottage, Moniaive, of Wallace Hall Cottage, Glencairn and of 15, West Morton Street, Thornhill, Morton, Dumfriesshire. who he married in 1910 in Morton.
Died of Wounds on 27 October 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

LIEUT. ARTHUR BELL.
Arthur McLean Bell – age 29 – Lieutenant, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) attached to the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Arthur had been educated at Dumfries Academy and had taken a position in Sumatra in the Dutch East Indies. He was commissioned in the Black Watch in October 1915 and he was a Second Lieutenant in the 11th (Reserve) Battalion, Black Watch at Hippswell Camp Richmond Yorkshire when he married that month, as Arthur McLean Bell.
Born 1888 in Moniaive, Glencairn as Arthur Bell. Son of the late John Proudfoot Bell and of Mary (McLean) Bell of Glencairn. Husband of Martha (McKinney) Bell of St. Vigeans, Leven, Fife, and of 73 Falcon Road, Edinburgh who he married in 1915 in Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty.
Killed in Action on 20 May 1918 and buried in Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy memorial and on the Scoonie Parish War Memorial in Leven, Fife.

CPL. JAMES BENNET.
James Bennet – age 26 – Lance Corporal (36507) 11th Battalion (2nd Hull) East Yorkshire Regiment.
James was a draper living at 1 Maybank Street, Crosshill, Glasgow when he enlisted as Private (16327) in the Highland Light Infantry in November 1914. He was posted as Private (9315) to the 32nd Division's Cyclist Company of the Army Cyclist Corps in September 1915 and landed with the Division in France in November 1915. He was wounded on the 1 July 1916 and evacuated to hospital in England. He returned to France in December 1916 and was posted to the East Yorkshire Regiment.
Born 1891 in Glencairn. Son of the late James Bennet of Lagganhill, Glencairn and of Jemima (Armstrong) Bennet of 1 Maybank Street, Crosshill, Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.
