PTE. JOHN MURDIE.
John James Murdie – age 27 – Private (S/7622) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John was a shepherd at Craigenvey, Dunscore, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915. He was a “wirer” and was placing barbed wire in front of his trench when he was killed.
Born 1888 in Glencairn. Son of James Kerr Murdie and of Agnes Hastings (McTaggart) Murdie of Girharrow, Moniaive.
Killed in Action on 5 May 1916 and buried in Quarry Cemetery, Vermelles, France.
Also named on the Dunscore Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES MURRAY.
James Murray – age 23 – Private (11414) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James worked as a shepherd with his father. He enlisted in October 1914 and joined his battalion in France on 2 April 1915.
Part of F Company, 2 Scots Guards were surrounded and killed to a man at Festubert on 16 May, 1915. The Times of May 29th 1915, in an article written by John Buchan about Festubert, states: -
"In this part of the battle, a Company of the Scots Guards, with two officers, got too far ahead and were cut off...........when some days later we took the place we found the Guards lying on the field of honour with swathes of the enemy's dead around them."
Born 1892 at Over Fingland Farm, Abington, Crawford, Lanarkshire.
Son of Isobella (Murray) Murray and of Benjamin James Murray of Minniegryle Farm, Moniaive, of Aberlosk Farm, Eskdalemuir and of Farden Mollock, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. They married in 1894 in Crawford.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial.


SGT. THOMAS NEILSON.
Thomas Neilson – age 26 – Sergeant (1156) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas had been educated at Dumfries Academy and assisted his father in his business as a merchant in Moniaive. As a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB in Moniaive he was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later by a sniper.
Tom was buried by men from the Moniaive section but his grave was lost.
Born 1889 in Glencairn. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Bertram) Neilson of Moniaive.
Killed in Action on 7 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy memorial.

PTE. JOHN NEILSON.
John Neilson – age 29 – Private (1154) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB in Moniaive and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed by a shell a month later while bringing supplies up to the front line.
Born 1886 in Moniaive. Son of John and Mary (Paterson) Neilson of Craigdarroch Sawmill, Moniaive and of West Cluden, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 13 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also listed on the Irongray Parish War Memorial and on the Shawhead Village memorial.

William MacKie Neilson – age 25 – Private (200905) 1/8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William was a gardener at Orchardton, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted as Private (8302) in the Scottish Rifles in January 1915. He joined the 1/5th Battalion in France in March 1915 but was evacuated due to illness in June 1916. After he recovered he was posted to the 1/8th Battalion in Egypt.
Born 1891 in Moniaive, Glencairn. Son of John and Mary (Paterson) Neilson of Craigdarroch Sawmill, Moniaive and of West Cluden, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 26 April 1917 and buried in Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also listed on the Irongray Parish War Memorial and on the Shawhead Village memorial.
William's story is told in Stuart Wilson's book “Answering the Call – Auchencairn and the First World War”


PTE. WILLM. PATERSON.
William Paterson – age 32 – Private (40772) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlander and was posted as Private (39093) to the 12th Royal Scots before transferring to the RSF. He was serving as a cook at the battalion headquarters when he was fatally wounded during an air raid. William died in the 96th Field Ambulance.
Born 1884 in Glencairn. Son of Robert and Agnes (Clement) Paterson of Marwhin, Moniaive, Glencairn and of Castramon, Dunscore, Dumfriesshire.
Died of Wounds on 8 November 1917 and buried in Irish House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dunscore Parish War Memorial.

CAPT. P. LYON PLAYFAIR.
Patrick Lyon Playfair – age 24 – Captain, "B" Company. 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Patrick was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh from 1907 and was at King's College, Cambridge when the war broke out. He was commissioned in the 7th Black Watch in October 1914 and promoted to Lieutenant (Temp. Captain) in September 1916. He was wounded near Arras in April 1917 and returned to his battalion in March 1918 but was killed two weeks later.
Born 1893 in Glencairn. Son of the Rev. Patrick Macdonald Playfair, D.D. formerly minister of Glencairn and minister of Holy Trinity, St Andrews, and of Eliza Ann (Walker) Playfair of Wyvern, St. Andrews, Fife.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Fettes College memorial and on the St. Andrews War memorial.


PTE. JAMES D. RAE.
James Davidson Rae – age 29 – Private (8255) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was brought up in Tobermory on Mull before the family moved to Ayrshire in the early 1900s He was a gamekeeper at Garronhill, Muirkirk, Ayrshire when he married in March 1909 and he was a ploughman at Boreland, Glencairn when he enlisted in February 1915. He joined his battalion in France in July but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Corstorphine Edinburgh. Son of the late Agnes (Cunningham) Rae (died 1904 in Auchinleck) and of William Rae. Husband of Margaret (Easton) Rae (from 1920 Mrs John Thomson Lawson) of Baird's Buildings, Garronhill, Muirkirk, Ayrshire who he married in 1909 in Muirkirk.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. JAMES REID.
James Grant Reid – age 35 – Private (18783) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had become a postman in Glasgow in 1898 and in 1901, aged 19, he was lodging at 44 Cambridge Street. He was employed in the Post Office in Glasgow and was living at 39 Gibson Street in Hillhead when he enlisted in Maryhill. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915. At some point he transferred to the 6th KOSB in France.
Born 1881 in Glencairn. Son of the late Thomas Reid (died 1903) and of the late Margaret (Kirkland) Rae (died 1908) of Ayr Street, Moniaive.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

PTE. HENRY RUSSELL.
Henry Symington Russell – age 34 – Private (30012) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
In 1911 Henry, aged 27, was a gamekeeper living with his parents at Shillingland, Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. When he married two years later, he was an estate dyker in the Gardens at Eliock House near Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. He was working in Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in 1916 and he joined his battalion in Mesopotamia.
Born 1883 in Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Helen (Scott) Russell of Burnside of Lochurr, Moniaive. Husband of Margaret Mary (Rae) Russell of Ingleston Cottage, Moniaive and of 6 Sunnyside, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1913 at Kirkland of Gelston, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 25 October 1918 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.


LC.CPL. JOHN RUTHERFORD.
John Rutherford – age 30 – Lance Corporal (D/12863) 1st (Royal) Dragoons.
John was educated at Dumfries Academy and worked with his father in his business as a clogger in Moniaive. He enlisted in October 1914 and as Private (GS/6344) he joined his regiment in France in December 1915. He was badly wounded in March 1918 and while being evacuated by train he was set down at Mantes Station, to the north-west of Versailles. John was taken to the French Hospital No.19 in Mantes but he died there and was buried with British and French military honours.
Born 1887 in Moniaive, Glencairn. Son of the late Mary Cowan (Clark) Rutherford (died 1889) and of John Irvine Rutherford, and step-son of Euphemia (Reid) Rutherford of Ayr Street, Moniaive.
Died of Wounds on 28 March 1918 and buried in Mantes (La Jolie) Communal Cemetery, Yvelines, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy memorial.

PTE. JOHN SEATON.
John Seaton – age 30 – Private (241582) 1/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was employed at Crawfordton House, Moniaive when he enlisted in June 1916. As Private (5285) he joined his battalion in Egypt but was killed at the battle of Wadi el Hesi, just north of Gaza City in Palestine.
Born 1887 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Agnes (Coltart) Seaton of The Burn, Thornhill and of Blackchub, Keir, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Elizabeth (Grierson) Seaton of Craigieside, New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire and of Leaston, Humbie, East Lothian who he married in 1909 at Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action on 8 November 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the New Abbey Parish War Memorial.


BUGLR. JAMES STRONG.
James Strong – age 25 – Private (241513) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was serving his apprenticeship at York Place Nursery in Dumfries when he enlisted as Bugler (794) in the Territorial 5th KOSB in February 1911. He was under-gardener at Maxwelton House, Moniaive when he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with the 1/5th KOSB at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine. He was discharged when his term expired in April 1916 but he re-enlisted and as Private (5179) he returned to his battalion in Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza in 1917. He moved with the battalion to France in April 1918 but was gassed near Vimy in May. When he had recovered he was posted to the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1893 at Haltcliff, Caldbeck, Wigton, Cumberland. Son of John and Helen Isabella (Croall) Strong of High Row, Haltcliff, Wigton.
Nephew of Mr J. Croall, nurseryman, of York Place, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 18 September 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Caldbeck Parish War Memorial.


GUNNR. WILLIAM SWAN.
William Robert Swan – age 25 – Gunner (125565) 156th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
William was in farm service at Newhouse, Holywood, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted.
Born 1891 in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Son of the late John and Elizabeth (Laidlaw) Swan of Newcastle-on-Tyne and of Landsdowne Road, West Hartlepool, County Durham who had married in 1887 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Nephew of Joseph and Mary Jardine of Lochhill, Glencairn
Killed in Action on 14 November 1916 and buried in Couin British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Holywood Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JOSEPH SYKES.
Joseph Sykes – age 19 – Private (S/40882) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Joseph was employed by Sir Emilius Laurie on the Maxwellton Home Farm, Moniaive when he enlisted in 1917. He was wounded in March 1918.
Born 1898 in Glencairn. Son of Joseph and Mary (Moffat) Sykes of Lannhall, Tynron, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 12 May 1918 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Tynron Parish War Memorial and on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall.


PTE. JAMES TAIT.
James Tait – age 22 – Private (S/7621) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a shepherd at Knockauchley Farm in Moniaive when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France on 2 October 1915 and served at the Hohenzollern Redoubt and at Vermelles where he was wounded. He was killed by a rifle grenade.
Born 1893 in Kells Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Ann (Clark) Tait of Knocksting Farm, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 25 November 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalry Parish War Memorial.


PTE. HENRY TODD.
Henry Todd – age 17 – Private (1498) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry was employed by Messrs Martin & Son, painters, in Moniaive and was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1898 in Moniaive, Glencairn as Henry Hastings Todd. Son of Thomas Todd and of Mary Boyd (Hastings) Todd of Dunreggan, Glencairn.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Served as:
Walter Shields – age 44 – Private (4763) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter, like his brother Thomas (Henry's father) was a dyker and had served previously with the 3rd (Reserve) KOSB. He enlisted, using his mother's name of Shields, and joined his battalion in France in October 1914. Walter was killed by a shell fragment in the trenches near Ypres and was reportedly the first man from Glencairn to fall.
Born 1871 in Glencairn. Son of the late Margaret (Shields) Todd (died 1908) Samuel Todd of Glencairn.
Missing in Action on 5 March 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. ALEXR. M. WALKER.
Alexander Miller Walker – age 20 – Private (13869) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Alexander was a foot-man at Monkton House, Ayrshire when he enlisted in October 1914. Prior to that he had been employed at Craigmuire, Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire. He served with the 1st & 2nd Battalions before being posted to the 6/7th Battalion. He served at Ypres and the Somme, and was wounded at St. Eloi and then at the Somme. Alexander was killed between High Wood and Martinpuich.
Born 1896 in Broxburn, Uphall, Linlithgow, West Lothian. Son of James and Annie Maria French (Miller) Walker of Shankfoot, Moniaive.
Missing in Action on 13 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Balmaclellan Parish War Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE WAUGH.
George Waugh – age 30 – Private (29978) Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) transferred as Private (528724) Labour Corps.
George was a gardener Crawfordton House, Moniaive when he enlisted in January 1916. He was mobilised in November and as Private (29978) he was posted to the 1/7th Cameronians in Egypt in March 1917 but by May he had been evacuated home after contracting blood poisoning and having his right fore-finger amputated. He was posted to the 1/10th Royal Scots in August but by January 1918 he had been transferred to the 460th Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps and was employed on forestry work on the Crawfordton Estate by Captain Laurie Walker. George was accidentally killed by a falling tree near the Home Farm.
Born 1887 in Moniaive, Glencairn. Son of Joseph and Barbara (Blair)Waugh, of Pielton, Moniaive.
Died on Service on 19 February 1918 and buried in Glencairn Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


BOMDR. WILLIAM WAUGH.
William Waugh – age 30 – Acting Bombardier (L/10339) 35th Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery attached to the 29th Light Railway Operating Company, Royal Engineers.
William was a goods guard with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company and lived in Glasgow when he enlisted. The 35th Division landed in France in January 1916. William had just returned to the front after some leave when he was killed.
Born 1886 in Moniaive. Son of the late William Waugh and of Jane Fulton (Muirhead) Waugh of Kirkland of Glencairn. Husband of Catherine Scott (Hyslop) Waugh, of Park, Closeburn who he married in 1911 in Closeburn.
Died on Active Service on 15 July 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial and on the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company memorial now in Ayr Station.

PTE. GEORGE T. WIGHT.
George Thomas Wight – age 17 – Private (16110) 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers.
George was, like his father, a shepherd at Borland, Southwick, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in December 1914. He died of scarlet fever in the Cambridge Hospital in Aldershot while still in training.
Born 1897 in Glencairn. Son of John and Mary (Murray) Wight of Borland of Southwick and of Terregles Lodge, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 14 February 1915 and buried in Aldershot Military Cemetery, Hampshire.
Also named on the Southwick War Memorial in Caulkerbush.


MISS JEMIMA WILSON.
Jemima Wilson – age 24 – Worker (3812) Gateshead Hostel, Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps.
Jemima had been in service in London when she enlisted and she joined the W.A.A.C. at Gateshead. She was accidentally scalded at her workplace and then contracted blood poisoning in the Royal Infirmary in Newcastle where she died.
Born 1893 in Dumfries as Jemima McEwen. Daughter of James and Margaret (McEwen) Wilson of Drumlanrig Mains and of Ingleston Cottage and Dunreggan, Moniaive who married in 1893 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on Service on 2 December 1917 and buried in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (St. Andrew's and Jesmond) Cemetery.

Thomas McEwan Wilson – age 20 – Private (16232) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Tom enlisted in October 1914. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915 but he was wounded on Christmas Day 1915 and was evacuated home. When he recovered he was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France.
Born 1895 in Keir, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Margaret (McEwen) Wilson of Drumlanrig Mains and of Ingleston Cottage and Dunreggan, Moniaive.
Missing in Action on 31 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Keir Parish War Memorial and on the Keir Parish Church memorial.


PTE. JOHN WILSON.
John Wilson – age 29 – Private (330650) 2/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a gardener when he enlisted as Private (5623) in the Royal Scots in December 1915 and he joined his battalion overseas in 1916. He was discharged in September 1917 as no longer physically fit for war service and was awarded a Silver War Badge (B74262) John died of tuberculosis at his sister Helen's house at 7 Academy Street in Dumfries.
Born 1888 in Dunreggan, Glencairn. Son of the late Thomas Wilson (died 1909) and the late Mary (McCartney) Wilson (died 1914) of Craigdarroch Lodge, Moniaive. Brother of Mrs. John Mackenzie of 7 Academy Street, Dumfries.
Died on 2 February 1918 and buried in Glencairn Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


PTE. WALTER WILSON.
Walter Wilson – age 36 – Private (25167) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Walter had been a grocer in Dalmellington in Ayrshire (when he married in 1909) and later in Ayr, but stated that he was a railway carriage lampman, living at Longacre Terrace in Ayr when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in August 1916 and joined the 2nd RSF in France in December 1916. He was evacuated to hospital in Leicester due to illness in February 1917 and was posted to the 1st RSF in France in June before transferring to the 6th/7th RSF in August.1917. Walter was moved back to the 1st Battalion in May 1918 and had just returned from leave when he was killed.
Born 1882 in Glencairn. Son of the late Mary Wilson.
Husband of Sarah Ann (Carruthers) Wilson of 8 Longacre Terrace, Ayr, of Station View, Kirkconnel Dumfriesshire and of Crossroads, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1909 in Closeburn.
Killed in Action on 2 September 1918 and buried in Ecoust-St. Mein British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial and on the Kirkconnel Parish War Memorial.

1939 - 1945


F/SGT. FRANCIS DOUGLAS BELL, R.A.F.
Francis Douglas Bell – age 22 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1371967) 161 (Special Duties) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
161 Squadron was a highly secretive unit, performing missions as part of the Royal Air Force Special Duties Service. It was tasked with missions of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS). Francis was the rear gunner on a Halifax bomber which had taken off from RAF Tempsford in Bedfordshire on an operation to Czechoslovakia but, after a failed attempt to drop the agents, the aircraft was brought down by anti-aircraft fire near Munich and the crew were buried in the West Cemetery there, but were re-interred in Durnbach in November 1947.
Born 1920 in the East Ward of Westmorland. Son of Frank and Elizabeth (Hill) Bell of Moniaive who married in 1913 in Glencairn.
Frank was chauffeur to Dr. John B. McMoreland in Moniaive in 1915 and by 1925 he was in Tynron. He was chauffeur at Lannhall, Tynron in 1935.
Killed in Action on 14 March 1943 and buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Bayern, Germany.
Also named on the Tynron Parish War Memorial.


D/R. FERGUS DONALDSON, R.S.
Thought to be:
Fergus Donaldson – age 42 – Private (2217661) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Fergus was employed by the General Post Office in Moniaive and was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB. He was mobilised in September 1939 and landed with his battalion as part of a second BEF at St. Malo in Brittany on the 13 June1940 but France capitulated and on 18 June the battalions were taken off from Cherbourg. Fergus returned in October 1944, landing at Ostend in Belgium, and taking part on the assault landings on Walcheren Island, at the mouth of the Scheldt. The battalion then fought through into Germany, taking part in the capture of Bremen, near where Fergus was killed. He was buried in Baden Churchyard but was re-interred at Becklingen in October 1946.
Born 1901 in Shettleston, Glasgow. Son of John and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Donaldson. Husband of Jean Tennant (Frew) Donaldson of Ayr Street, Moniaive who he married in 1924 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
Killed in Action on 15 April 1945 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.

Note: all records and the Dunscore War memorial show the brothers' name as EWEN.

CPL. HAROLD EWAN, K.O.S.B.
Harold Ewen – age 26 – Lance Corporal (3189524) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Harry was employed by a builder in Moniaive and, as a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB, he was mobilised at the outbreak of war. The battalion landed at Ostend in Belgium in October 1944 and fought in the battle of the Scheldt Estuary in Belgium and the Netherlands. He was one of six casualties suffered by “C Company” when they were hit by a “moaning minnies” nebelwerfer rocket strike while taking Broederbosch Wood near Afferden.
Born 1919 in Portobello, Edinburgh. Son of the late Martha (Dobson) Ewen (died 1943) and of George Ewen of Dardarroch Cottage, Dunscore.
Killed in Action on 16 February 1945 and buried in Milsbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Dunscore Parish War Memorial.

William James Ewen – age 23 – Private (3132866) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
William enlisted in the beginning of 1940 and served with the A&SH until February 1942, when he was reported missing after the fall of Singapore. The 2nd A&SH who were in Malaya when war broke out, fought the Japanese down the length of Malaya and held the Causeway into Singapore. After the final battles of Singapore the survivors became Prisoners of War of the Japanese.
Born 1918 in Dublin, Ireland. Son of the late Martha (Dobson) Ewen (died 1943) and of George Ewen of Dardarroch Cottage, Dunscore.
Died on Service on 16 March 1942 and buried in Kuala Lumpur (Cheras Road) Civil Cemetery. Malaysia.
Also named on the Dunscore Parish War Memorial.

LT. DOUGLAS STEWART KENNEDY, R.A.
Douglas Stewart Kennedy – age 22 – Lieutenant (106690) 169 (8th Bn. The Gordon Highlanders) Battery, 100 Light Anti-Aircraft/Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery seconded to "A" Squadron, Special Air Service Regiment, Army Air Corps.
Douglas was educated at Loretto School in Musselburgh, East Lothian from 1933 to 1938 and was a Sergeant in the Officer Training Corps. He went to the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in January 1939 and was commissioned from there in November 1939. He joined the 57th LAA Regiment and served with it as part of the 4th Indian Division in Syria and in the Western Desert during 1941. He joined the 1st SAS Regiment in August 1942 and was killed after a raid near Tobruk when his jeep hit a mine.
Born 1920 in India. Son of the late Cecil Kennedy (died 1940) and of Elsie Stewart (Booth) Kennedy of Townhead of Glencairn, and of Nelson, New Zealand who had married in 1919 in Hampstead, London.
Cecil was a bank manager with the National Bank of India in London and in the 1930's lived (partly) in Glencairn. He died at Townhead of Glencairn in February 1940.
Two of Cecil's brothers, Charles and Walter, were killed in WW1 and are named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorials.
Missing in Action on 20 November 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Also named on the Belmont School memorial. A stained glass window in a chapel in the grounds of Crawfordton House in Glencairn.


SGT. GORDON KERR, K.O.S.B.
Samuel Gordon Kerr – age 29 – Sergeant (3189527) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Samuel was employed by a builder in Moniaive and was a footballer with Glencairn F.C. Known locally as “Gong” he was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB and was mobilised in September 1939. He was mentioned in despatches for his action during a very heavy engagement at Waldfeucht, on the German side of the Dutch-German frontier, close to Sittard. Two German Tiger tanks attacked the village held by the 5th KOSB but Sergeant Kerr brought an anti-tank gun into action and saved the situation. During the battle he received injuries which later proved fatal.
Born 1915 in Mouswald Village, Dumfriesshire. Son of Samuel Gordon Kerr and Margaret (Clement) Kerr of Ayr Street, Moniaive.
Died of Wounds on 21 January 1945 and buried in Sittard War Cemetery, Netherlands.

SIGNL. DAVID WRIGHT, R.C. of S.
David Wright – age 37 – Signalman (2358725) Royal Corps of Signals.
David was brought up from an early age in Moniaive when his father, originally from Balmaghie, retired as a Sergeant from the Police Force in Liverpool. David was made a prisoner of war in the Dutch East Indies in March 1943 and was taken to the Osaka No.14 Branch Camp at Matsue, Wakayama City, Japan to work in the Sumitomo Metal Industry Company, David died of a heart attack and his cremated remains were placed in Yokohama after the war.
Born 1906 in Toxteth Park, Liverpool. Son of the late James Wright (died 1935) former Police Sergeant in Liverpool, and Jessie (Edgar) Wright of High Street, and of Ayr Street, Moniaive.
Died on Service on 10 December 1943 and buried in Yokohama War Cemetery, Japan.
