West Calder Parish Church – Bronze Plaque in Foyer of the Church

Bronze tablet mounted on marble, raised letters bearing the names of the men from the Parish Church who fell in the Great War
(The rank and regiments are abbreviated on the memorial, but I’ve written them in full, as many of today’s generation would not know the regimental abbreviations). I have a photo, but still can't manage to post photos............

The names are from a list published in the Midlothian Advertiser, I haven't seen the Roll of Honour. I did request information on names from Harwood Church in West Calder, but to date haven't had a reply.

Captain James Brash, DSO MC 7th Btn Seaforth Highlanders – Died of wounds received in action 9th November 1916
Trooper Robert Brash Machine Cu Corps, Killed in action 1st April 1918
Sgt James Calder 8th Btn Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Killed in action 24th September 1917
Pte Alexander Chapman 9th Btn Black Watch. Killed in action 24th September, 1917
L/Cpl William Ellis 16th Btn Royal scots, Killed in action 11th April 1918
L/Cpl Archibald Forrest 17th Service Battalion Highland Light Infantry, Died at Harrietville, West Calder 21st January 1918.
Pte James Hamilton 1st Btn Cameron Highlanders, killed in action 17th November, 1915
Bombardier Robert L Mackie, Royal Field Artillery, killed in action 21st July 1917
Pte Angus McLagan New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Killed at Sulva Bay, 7th August, 1915.
Cpl Hugh McLagan Royal Field Artillery. Died of gas poisoning in 19th CC Station, 17th July 1917
Pte William Prentice 2nd Royal Scots, Killed in action 13th November, 13th November 1916
Pte Alexander Rae 2nd Btn Black Watch, killed in action 8th January 1916
Pte James Whigham 1st Btn Cameron Highlanders. Reported missing 11th November 1914. Not since heard of, and now presumed to have been killed in action.
