There are four regimental crests carved into the corners of the memorial.

Scots Guards, Royal Scots, Highland Light Infantry and Gordon Highlanders

Unfortunately the sandstone is starting to weather and the sharp detail is disappearing on some of the carvings.

Finally I'll show the deatils of the thistles on the top of the memorial.

I'll also show one of the pigeons which cause a bit of a rumpus between the council and the RBL.

The council does a great job of looking after Dalkeith's War memorial in a very nice location. Unfortunately just before a visit by the local RBL before a best kept war memorial competition the local pigeons had decided to decorate it themselves.

Alledgedly there was accusations of the council failing to maintain the memorial to a proper standard because of the bird droppings but it's a public memorial and a great perch for the local birds so this sort of mess is inevitable.

On both occasions I have visited the memorial it has looked well tended.

Second Lieutenant John White Somerville (I have seen the name in newspapers spelled John Whyte Somerville), was a young Scottish sculptor who was developing an increasing reputation, especially in animal sculpture, by the eve of WWI. He exhibited at many of the major exhibitions in the summer of 1914 and sculptures such as 'The Return From Labour' featuring two farm horses, 'A Jersey Calf' and 'An Angry Leopard', exhibited at the Edinburgh and Stirling exhibitions were, according to the newspapers, widely praised.
