A friend who is an experienced metal detectorist found an interesting button recently near Barholm Castle, Gatehouse of Fleet and has asked for my assistance in identifying it.

The button is silver plated and has Kirkcudbright Stewartry around the edge with a crown, thistle and the letters EV. The crown looks to me like that used by the present queen, at least in watermarks etc, i.e. Edward rather than Tudor crown but the finder says that in his experience it is much older.

In trying to identify it I contacted Ian Devlin who wrote 'Albanich - A history of the Galloway Rifle Volunteers' but he had seen nothing like it.

I just wondered if anyone has any ideas?

I thought of Edward V but that would not make sense in a Scottish context and the button is probably not that old anyway.
