This stucco wall panel is above the door of the church. My Latin is virtually nil but I spotted the word "militiae" so took a photo. On return home I searched the internet and found that Sir John Snell was born near Colmonell in 1629, the son of a blacksmith. He fought for the Royalists in the English Civil War, including the Battle of Worcester. He made pots of money and left money in his will to pay for an annual scholarship that allows a Glsgow University graduate to undertake postgraduate study at Baliol College, Oxford. I see that one of the men funded was Robert Blair VC (13 March 1834 – 28 March 1859) - so more than enough military connections for me Smile
