Named on the Kelso War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

2nd LIEUT. J. LESLIE LAIDLAW.
John Leslie Laidlaw – age 22 – Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John was educated at Kelso High School and at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh before becoming a student of medicine at Edinburgh University in 1912. He had just completed his second year of study when he was commissioned from the University's Officer Training Corps in October 1914. John joined his battalion in France in February 1916 but was fatally wounded at Longueval on the Somme and died three days later.
Born 1894 in Muthill, Perthshire. Son of the Rev. John Laidlaw and of Johanna Mary (Young) Laidlaw of Muthill and of Kelso United Free Church, later St. John's U.F, Church, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 20 July 1916 and buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church, on the Kelso High School memorial, on the Merchiston Castle School memorial, on the Edinburgh Old College memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Kelso War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

PTE. WALTER D. MAIR.
Walter David Mair – age 29 – Private (2071) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Walter was educated at West Ham School in Essex before becoming a student of Arts at Edinburgh University in 1906. He graduated M.A. In 1911, became a teacher at Kelso High School and played for the Kelso Rugby Club. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was fatally wounded a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1885 in West Ham, Essex. Son of the late David Mair of Boundary Road, East Ham, Essex (died 1903) and of Jessie Leishman Mair of 43 Slateford Road, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 15 July 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named as a Teacher on the Kelso High School memorial, and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Kelso War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

MAJOR JAMES D. L. MELROSE.
James Douglas Leitch Melrose – age 33 – Major, 29th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
James was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1904. He graduated in 1908 and was appointed a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh in 1909. He was commissioned in the Territorial Forth Companies of the RGA in Edinburgh in April 1913 and was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1914. He was promoted to Captain in June 1916 and went to France in August. James was promoted to Major commanding a Battery in March 1917 but was fatally wounded the following year at Kemmell Hill and died at Boeschepe near Ypres. He was buried in the Churchyard there and was re-interred at Abeele in 1921
Born 1884 in Kelso. Son of the late Margaret (Harvey) Melrose (died 1891) and of former Provost James Melrose of Goshen Bank, Kelso. Husband of Jessie Macpherson (Jenkinson) Melrose of 13 Rutland Street, and of 5 Dean Terrace, Edinburgh who he married in 1916 in Newington, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1918. and buried in Abeele Aerodrome Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial, on the George Watson's College memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen and on the University Old College memorial.

Named on the Kelso War Memorial as:

CAPTAIN JAMES W. CRAWFORD.
James Wolfenden Crawford, M.B., Ch.B. – age 32 – Captain (128228) Royal Army Medical Corps.
James graduated from Edinburgh University in 1933 and, after various hospital appointments, he joined the practice of Dr. McCracken in Kelso in 1936. He was commissioned in April 1940.
Born 1910 in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Son of Robert and Edith (Wolfenden) Crawford. Husband of Margaret (Pennington) Crawford of Charlesfield, Kelso and of Edinburgh who he married in 1936 in Middleton St. George, County Durham.
Died on Active Service on 5 May 1942 and buried in Madras War Cemetery, Chennai, India.

Named on the Jedburgh War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

HUGGAN, J. L. LIEUT. R. A. M. C.
James Laidlaw Huggan – age 25 – Lieutenant, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
James was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1896 and at Darlington Grammar School in County Durham before becoming a Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University in 1905. He graduated M.B. & Ch.B. in 1911 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the RAMC in July 1912. He played rugby for the university, for London Scottish and once, in March 1914, for Scotland.
James landed at Le Havre with the 3rd Coldstream Guards on 13 August 1914 but was killed a month later during the battle of the Aisne. He was buried near Soupir but his grave was lost.
Born 1888 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Robert Huggan (died.1892) of Jedburgh and of Isabella Broomfield (Laidlaw) Huggan of Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial, on the Darlington Grammar School memorial, on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University, on the University's Roll of the Fallen, and on the Scottish Rugby Union memorial at Murrayfield, Edinburgh.

Named on the Melrose War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

CAPTAIN W.H. CALVERT.

William Hall Calvert – age 56 – Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps.
William was educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh before he became a Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University from 1878 to 1882. He gained his post-graduate MD in 1889. William was in general practice in Melrose for over 25 years until he retired in 1911 and during that time (in March 1900) he became Surgeon-Lieutenant to the 1st Roxburgh and Selkirk -The Border Rifle Volunteer Corps. At the outbreak of war he returned from an extended vacation and was granted a commission in the RAMC. He was attached as a Lieutenant to the 2/6th Seaforth Highlanders at Fort George, near Inverness, in April 1915. He was promoted to Captain but became ill and was obliged to give up his commission. William died in a nursing home in Marylebone, London..
Born 1861 in North Berwick, East Lothian. Son of the late Rev. William Calvert (died 1888) and of the late Mary (McDougall) Calvert (died 1906) of the Manse, North Berwick and of Elmbank Melrose. Husband of Jean (King) Calvert of the Laurels, Melrose who he married in 1892 in Melrose.
Died on 16 June 1917 and buried in Melrose Cemetery.
Also named on the Royal High School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Yarrow Parish War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

LT. T. M. ALEXANDER K.O.S.B.
Thomas Mitchell Alexander – age 29 – Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was educated at Selkirk High School before studying Law at Edinburgh University. He served his articles as a solicitor in Edinburgh and then joined the family law firm. After the death of his father he took over several of his responsibilities including Clerk to the Yarrow School Board.
He was commissioned in the Territorial 4th KOSB in May 1910 and was promoted in January 1913. Thomas was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1885 in Selkirk. Son of the late Charles Alexander (died 1911) and of Charlotte Anne Thyne (Mitchell) Alexander of Upland, Ettrick Road, Selkirk.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Yarrow Roll of Honour at Yarrow Feus, on the Selkirk Roll of Honour, and on the Roll of the Fallen at Edinburgh University.

Reverend Edward John Howard MacIldowie – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 1/9th (Glasgow Highland) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Edward was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University from where he graduated with an Honours M.A. in 1912. He then began his divinity studies at Glasgow University and graduated B.D. in 1915. He was commissioned from the University's Officer Training Corps in November 1915 and joined his battalion on the Somme in July 1916 but was killed four months later.
Born 1891 in Barton Regis, Gloucestershire. Son of the late Rev. John MacIldowie (died 1898) and of Catherine Margaret (Williams) MacIldowie of 4 Logan Road, Bishopston, Bristol, of 12 Caird Drive, Partick, Glasgow and of Princes Road, Liverpool.
Ward of the late Rev. Dr. Borland of Yarrow, Selkirkshire.
Missing in Action on 1 November 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Yarrow Church memorial and on the Yarrow Roll of Honour at Yarrow Feus as Lt Rev E.J.H. MacIldowie, 2nd November, 1916, HLI, Yarrow Manse.

Henry Rawson Taggart – age 19 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders attached to the 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Harry was educated at Peebles High School and then at Glasgow Academy in 1915/16 before he attended Edinburgh University where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps until April 1917. He was commissioned from there in August 1917. Harry joined the 1st Black Watch in France in early May 1918 but he was killed less than three months later near the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
Born 1898 in Dennistoun, Glasgow. Son of the Rev. Moses Taggart and of Martha Hall (Allan) Taggart of The Manse, Lyne, Peeblesshire.
Killed in Action on 24 July 1918 and buried in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery Extension, Bethune, France.
Also named on the Megget War Memorial in Cappercleuch, Yarrow as 2nd Lieut, Henry R. Taggart. A.&.S,H. , on the Lyne and Megget Roll of Honour in Lyne Kirk, on a plaque in Lyne Kirk, and on the Yarrow Roll of Honour at Yarrow Feus as Lt. Henry R Taggart, 24th July, 1918, Black Watch, Manse of Lyne. Andrew Hubert Millin Henderson – age 20 – Second Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was educated at St. Mary's School in Melrose, Roxburghshire and at the Edinburgh Institution (now Stewart's Melville College) before becoming a student of medicine at Edinburgh University in 1913. He was a Sergeant and Lieutenant in the 1st Highland Cadet Battalion of the Royal Scots from 1911 to May 1913 when he gained a commission in the Territorial 4th KOSB. Andrew landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in St. Andrew, Edinburgh. Son of Dr. Percy James Henderson, M.B. and of Hannah Jane or Annie (Millin) Henderson of 9 Church Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Mary's School memorial and on the Edinburgh Institution and Edinburgh University Rolls of Honour.

John Charles Grierson – age 23 – Private (G/25287) 16th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment.
John was educated at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University from where he graduated M.A. (Honours in History) in 1915. He served in the Officer Training Corps from 1913 to December 1915. John was employed in banking in London when he enlisted and he joined his battalion as a Lewis Gunner in early 1916.
Born 1893 in Selkirk. Son of the late Jane Kennedy (Little) Grierson (died 1914) and of William Grierson of 48 East Clairmont Street, Edinburgh.
Grandson of John Grierson of Helm Cottage, Selkirk.
William was a minister in the Catholic Apostolic Church and in August 1916 he married Agnes Campbell Eeles in the church at Mansfield Place in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 23 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the George Heriot's School memorial and on the Edinburgh University's Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Stow Parish War Memorial in Midlothian as:

CAPT. J.T.C. IRELAND, CHAPLAIN
The Rev. John Thomas Craig Ireland – age 45 – Chaplain 4th Class, Army Chaplains' Department.
John was educated at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University where he was a student of the Arts and Divinity and from where he graduated M.A. in 1896. He became a minister in the United Free Church of Scotland and served as a Chaplain in the South African Wars.
John was the minister of the Stow United Free Church when he was appointed a Chaplain to the Forces in September 1915 and he landed with the 10th Black Watch at Boulogne that same month before moving with them to Salonica in northern Greece in November. He was returning to duty after some leave when the Troopship “Transylvania” sailing from Marseilles was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-63 in the Gulf of Genoa off Cape Vado, Italy.
Born 1872 in Wemyss, Fife. Son of the late William Ireland (died 1914) and of Jessie Craig (Ireland) Ireland of Norfield, Buckhaven, Fife. Husband of Agnes (Walker) Ireland of Ness Bank, Inverness, of Stow and of 18 Braid Crescent, Edinburgh who he married in 1899 in Edinburgh.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 4 May 1917 and named on the Savona Memorial, Italy.
Also named on the Daniel Stewart's College memorial, on the United Free Church memorial in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and on the University's Roll of the Fallen.
