The following man [Samuel Corson] is mentioned on a gravestone in Lambhill Cemetery, Maryhill, Glasgow, but his name doesn't appear on the Terregles Memorial.

Hello Anne,

He is named on the Maxwelltown War Memorial in the neighbouring parish of Troqueer.

A newspaper report states that he was the son of Mr. Corson, blacksmith, Islesteps, Troqueer. Samuel served his apprenticeship as a gardener at Cargen (also Troqueer). Enlisted in August 1914 (with that regt. number, he must have been one of the first in the queue).

The family must have moved to Maryhill at a later date.

I think the other way round - Samuel Corson was born in Maryhill in 1896.

I am researching Archie Cameron 16964 who died in April 1918 during the Battle of Lys. He lived in Terregles. Prior to joining the Border Regiment he was a Private in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was awarded the Military Medal in October 1916. I have his service record from Kew but am trying to find a photograph of him to compare with the picture I have of a soldier I believe might be him. If anyone can offer any suggestions I would be pleased to hear from you. Many thanks.

Here are my more detailed notes including two items from the Dumfries and Galloway Standard. There may have been a photo in this newspaper but I don't remember one.

Archibald Borland Cameron, Military Medal – age 24 – Second Lieutenant: 8th Battalion, Border Regiment.
Formerly Private and Corporal (16964) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
(Source: Medal Index Card)
Archie was employed by Mr. Wylie of the Corn Exchange, Dumfries when he enlisted in December 1914 in 6th KOSB and went to France in May 1915. Wounded February 1916 and again in July when he had just been appointed Temp. Coy. Quartermaster Sergeant. Commissioned 29 August 1917 in the Border Regiment. Awarded Military Medal.
(Source:SRoH, D&G Standard 22/7/1916 p.3d and 16/10/1918 p.2b)
Born 1896 in Ochiltree, Ayrshire. (Source:GRoS – Birth Register)
Son of James and Annie (Jack) Cameron of Lincluden Mains Farm, Terregles.
Missing in Action – 9 April 1918.
Commonwealth War Grave – Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

It might be worthwhile contacting the Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/ and/or the Reference Library in Dumfries.
There was an item about Cameron on the Great War Forum a couple of years ago - was that you?

Do you have a L/Gazette date for his MM please???

UPDATE: He was awarded a M.M. as 16964 Corporal (Acting Sergeant) A. Cameron, K.0.Sco. Bord. and returned to France in October 1916. Archie was granted a commission in the Border Regiment in August 1917.

Hi - many thanks for getting back to me. Yes, it would have been me who posted before. I wasn't sure if I had and couldn't find it so tried again! It may be that my photo isn't him at all, but it would be good even to rule him out. Thanks again for the information. I'll keep looking.
