Morton WM was unveiled on 3.7.1921 with 62 names; and between 1924 and 1926 another name added of James Inglis Beattie, Service No 7651, killed in action 12/7/1925 aged 39 years. His name is not on any of the plaques or rolls in the town.
correction on 27.11.11 -Sorry typing error on date here - it should read 12/7/1915 and not 1925.

Does anyone know where the RSF would have been in action in 1925? NWF of India I presume.

From The Scotsman 08 July 1921

    WAR MEMORIALS

THORNHILL.— The war memorial of the parish of Morton was dedicated and unveiled by his Grace the Duke of Buccleuch. K.T. The memorial service was held in Morton Parish Church, and the ministers taking part were Rev. J. H. Oswald, Rev. G. Kirk, Rev. J. Paterson, Rev. J. B. Pirrett. The memorial, which is in the form of a fountain, is a handsome piece of work, made by mr A. Carruthers, Thornhill. The unveiling of the memorial, which stands in The Gill, was performed before a crowd of 3000.

I question if the memorial described above is the one pictured in this topic. The newspaper article describes it as taking the form of a fountain.

I think it is the same, from memory and from the pics, I think the WW2 addition sits on top of the fountain. Teddy will know or can find out, I hope she drops in to comment.

The memorial is a pedestral drinking fountain standing twelve feet high, made of Dalbeattie granitie, of classic design with a canopy and pedestal surmonted by a wreath The foundtain is on back panel, to left and right the panels are for the inscriptions of WW1 names, and front panel stating why erected. (will send photo of fountain to spoons) A balustrade forms a surrond, the internal wall supporting a stone seat. The building work was carried out by Mr. Alexander Carruthers, Thornhill.
The fountain is in memory of Robert Cook 1851-1919, Merchant Draper of Thornhill.
The cost of the memorial was £1.300.00. Unveiled on 3/7/1921.
'The architect was Mr. T. Valentine, Kilmarnock & Glasgow; his inspiration from the temple of Vesta in Rome, and has designed a stately structure in freestone, the massive covering slabs of peristyle of columns bringing the monument to a height of about 13-14 feet. The design embraces a fountain, the basin of which is at the rear of the monument' - quoted from the book - Morton War Memorial and Memories in Thornhill Dumfriesshire,
printed 2011.
The WW2 names were added onto middle of monument, on a book.
