CAPT. JAMES THOMSON, BORDER REGT.
James Thomson – age 31 – Captain and Adjutant 1st Battalion, Border Regiment.
James returned from Cape Town, South Africa to enlist and began officer training at the Inns of Court O.T.C. as Private (4767) in June 1915. He was commissioned in the 1/5th Border Regiment and went to France in October 1916. He was promoted to Captain in 1917. James was killed by a bomb from a German aircraft near Bleuet Farm, Everdinge.
Born 1886 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of Robert and Jessie (Black) Thomson of 14 New Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 31 October 1917 and buried in Bleuet Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. ARCHIBALD TODD, K.O.S.B.
Archibald Todd – age 35– Private (23216) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Archie, aged 18, was a cattleman living with his family at 15&16 Back Street, Thornhill. He was posted to the 1st KOSB in France and transferred to the 7th/8th KOSB. His remains were recovered from the battlefield after the war and re-interred at Haisnes.
Born 1883 in Morton. Son of the late Robert Todd (died 1911) and of Janet (Moffat) Todd of Townhead Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 17 September 1918 and buried in St. Mary's A.D.S. Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


PTE. EDWARD J. TWEDILY, K.O.S.B.
Edward Jackson Twedily – age 23 – Private (17577) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Edward worked in a sawmill when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with the 7th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915 and was wounded in August 1916.
Born 1893 in Morton. Son of James and Elspeth (Jackson) Twedily of Broomrigg, Carronbridge, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

PTE. JAMES WALKER, DRAGOON GDS.
James Walker – age 39 – Private (GS/7984) 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) 3rd Reserve Cavalry Regiment.
James was a barman, living at 17 New Street, Thornhill. He had previously served in the Carabiniers for 12 years, in India and in the South African War. He rejoined his regiment at the outbreak of war and went to France in December 1914. He was evacuated to the Canterbury Military Hospital for an appendix operation but died there due to post operative complications.
Born c.1877 but I cannot trace.
Son of Robert and Jane (Sharp) Walker. Husband of Georgina (Houston) Walker of New Street and of 7 West Morton Street, Thornhill who he married in 1905 in Dennistoun, Glasgow. Georgina was born in Morton in 1879 and died there , age 74, in 1950.
Died on Service on 22 April 1916 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


CORPL. ALEX. K. WRIGHT, H.L.I.
Alexander Kirkpatrick Wright – age 22 – Lance Corporal (2129) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander was a grocer with his uncle David Kinnell in Thornhill when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915 then moved with them to Mesopotamia in December 1915.
Born 1893 in Morton. Son of the late William Wright, M.R.C.V.S. and of Grace (Kirkpatrick) Wright of 72 Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 8 March 1916 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial, now in the Parish Church, and on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

1939 - 1945.



PTE. WM. BARCLAY, K.O.S.B.
William Barclay – age 21 – Private (3191593) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
1st KOSB embarked for France in 1939. They crossed the frontier into Belgium in May 1940 but, outgunned by an enemy of overwhelming numerical superiority, they were ordered to withdraw. Fighting their way to the coast, on the night of 31st May they were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk. William died of wounds in the Shorncliffe Military Hospital in Elham, Kent.
Born 1917 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Son of William and Janet (Bryson) Barclay of 33 Carronbridge, Thornhill.
Died of Wounds on 2 June 1940 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


SGT. ROBERT BONE, R.A.F.
Robert Bone – age 31 – Sergeant/Untrained Pilot (974165) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was a butcher in Thornhill when he enlisted in December 1939. He served in the catering and butchers' department of the RAF until he volunteered to be a pilot. He went to the 24 Air School at RAF Nigel in South Africa in 1944 which provided advanced training for cadet pilots. Robert was killed in a flying accident.
Born 1915 in Colmonell, Ayrshire. Son of Thomas and Janet (Sharp) Bone of High Fardingbank, Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Phyllis (Haining) Bone of 50 Kinnell Street, Thornhill who he married in 1940 in Thornhill.
Died on Service on 12 January 1945 and buried in Nigel New Cemetery, Gauteng, near Johannesburg, South Africa.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial, on the Durisdeer Parish War Memorials and on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. DAVID CARSON, R.A.S.C.
David Carson – age 31 – Driver (T/55315) Royal Army Service Corps.
David was employed in the roads department of Dumfries County Council and, as a reservist, he was mobilised and went to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force in September 1939. By the end of May 1940 the BEF had withdrawn towards the beaches at Dunkirk for evacuation.
Born 1909 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Annie (Kerr) Carson of Glenmarlinn Cottage, Penpont. Husband of Janet (McKay) Carson of Penpont and of Council Houses, Nithbank Road, Thornhill who he married in 1935 in Tynron, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action between 30 May and 2 June 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the Penpont Parish War Memorial.

PTE. ALAN CONNELL, R.I.F.
Note: All civic records spell his first name as Allan.
Alan Connell – age 29 – Fusilier (3194789) 6th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Allan was employed in the Messrs Kirkpatrick bacon factory in Thornhill and he was a Private in the King's Own Scottish Borderers when he married in February 1941. At some point he was posted to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The 6th “Skins” fought in Tunisia in 1942, took part in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 and in the landings in Italy in September.
Born 1914 in Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire. Son of Elizabeth Connell of 3 Townhead Street, Thornhill. Husband of Grace Miller (Temple) Connell of the Fever Hospital, Thornhill who he married in 1941 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 16 May 1944 and buried in Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.


PTE. ROBERT COOK, C.H.
Robert Cook – age 27 – Private (14709339) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
The 5th Camerons landed at Normandy on 7 June 1944 as part of the 51st (Highland) Division. Robert was killed south of Nijmegen during the advance into Germany (Operation Veritable)
Born 1917 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Elizabeth Galt McKeller (McMurray) Cook of Broomrigg, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 17 February 1945 and buried in Mook War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish War Memorials and on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


SPR. T. P. GRAHAM, R.E.
Thomas Proudfoot Graham – age 24 – Sapper (211928) 276 Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Thomas was a painter in Thornhill when he enlisted in 1940. 276 RE were part of the 51st Highland Division and in February 1945 they crossed the border into Germany in Operation Veritable.
Thomas was killed and buried at Gennep, Netherlands and re-interred at Milsbeek in April 1946.
Born 1920 in Morton. Son of James and Janet Laidlaw (Proudfoot) Graham of West Morton Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 13 February 1945 and buried in Milsbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

L.CPL. J. S. HALLIDAY, K.O.S.B.
John Shannon Halliday – age 30 – Lance Corporal (3196095) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted in July 1940 and went out to join the 2nd KOSB who had been based in India since before the outbreak of the war. The circumstances of his death are not known. It was reported that “Private Halliday is the first Thornhill soldier to have made the supreme sacrifice in this war.”
Born 1912 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late John James Halliday (died 1941) and Catherine (Anderson) Halliday of Gashouse, Thornhill.
Died on Active Service on 29 July 1942 and buried in Karachi War Cemetery, Pakistan.
Also named on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial.


CPL. WM. JARDINE, R.H.
William Jardine – age 21 – Corporal (3190211) 7th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William was an apprentice painter in Thornhill when he enlisted. He served in Egypt and Tunisia before he landed in Sicily in early July 1943.
Born 1921 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Robert Kirkpatrick Jardine (died 1928) and of Kate Murray (Shankland) Jardine of North Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1943 and buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial, on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial and on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial, Dumfriesshire.


A.B. J. T. KERR, R.N.
The link to Thornhill is not obvious but he is thought to be:
James Trodden Kerr – age 22 – Able Seaman (C/SSX 26148) H.M.L.C.T. 300, Royal Navy.
James joined the navy as a “Boy” in 1938 and was stationed in China before war broke out. He was serving on the cruiser H M.S. Cornwall when she was sunk in the Indian Ocean in April 1942. James was a crewman on the Landing Craft Tank 300 on the first day of Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily, when he was fatally wounded.
Born 1921 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of Walter and Jean (Trodden) Kerr of Queensberry Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds/Buried at sea on 10 July 1943 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Annan Burgh War Memorial.

PTE. R. G. McCOWAN, K.O.S.B.
Robert George McCowan – age 25 – Private (3191590) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Bertie” was employed in the Messrs Kirkpatrick bacon factory in Thornhill when he enlisted in 1939. He landed on the Normandy beaches with his battalion on 15 June 1944 and took part in the battles around Caen. Bertie was accidentally killed as the result of a battle accident and he and Private Andrew Weir Strain from Kilbirnie in Ayrshire, also 6th KOSB and who died on the same date, are the only British military burials in the Aumont Cemetery.
Born 1919 in Morton. Son of the late John McCowan (died 1934) and of Mary McLachlan (Brownrigg) McCowan of New Street, Thornhill.
Died on Active Service on 5 September 1944 and buried in Aumont Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


GDSM. DOUG. McKENZIE, S.G.
Douglas John McKenzie – age 21 – Guardsman (2701058) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Douglas was killed at Anzio in Italy about a week after the initial landings.
Born 1923 in West Ham, London. Son of the late Thomas Clements McKenzie (died 1943) and Mabel (Dyer) McKenzie of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill.
Missing in Action on 30 January 1944 and named on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.


L.A.C. JOS. McNAUGHT, R.A.F.
Joseph McNaught – age 39 – Leading Aircraftman (1562096) No.1 R.A.F. Beach Unit, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
No. 1 Beach Unit was formed at R.A.F. Ayr in September 1943. Their function was to provide technical advice and assistance in regard to personnel, equipment and stores during a landing operation in enemy territory. On D-day Joseph was onboard the transport ship S.S. Sambut off Dover when she was hit by shell-fire from German cross-channel guns. The blazing ship was racked by further explosions and was eventually sunk by torpedo to stop it being a hazard to other vessels.
Born 1905 in Thornhill, Morton. Son of the late John McNaught (died 1943) and of the late Marie Lizzie (Clifton) McNaught (died January 1944) who had married in 1898 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
Husband of Isabella Watson Brown (McDonald) McNaught of Springfield, Fife who he married in 1943 in Kettle, Fife.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 6 June 1944 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
His brother John, Private 39685 Scottish Rifles was killed on 22 September 1918.

LT. A. B. MILLER, R.W.R.
Archibald Bryce Miller – age 47 – Lieutenant (152917) 12th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
Archibald suffered a fractured skull from an accidental fall from a window in his billet and died in Larne District Hospital. He had served with the Scottish Horse Yeomanry during WW1 being commissioned from Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant in July 1915. He transferred to the Indian Army where he served with the 2nd Battalion of the 26th Punjabis Regiment as a Lieutenant and Captain. He retired from Indian Army as a Major in November 1921. He joined the 12th Warwickshires in Larne, Ireland in December 1940 after the battalion had returned from France to take up guarding duties against an invasion.
Born 1893 in Douglas, Lanarkshire. The birth was also registered in Coldstream, Berwickshire where his father was a groom.
Son of Andrew and Margaret (Bryce) Miller. Husband of Mary Rowena Stuart (Strong) Miller of 139 Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill who he married in India.
Died on Service on 21 March 1941 and buried in Larne New Cemetery, County Antrim, Ireland.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial.

His brother Major (AI/223) Andrew Douglas Miller of the 10th Baluch Regiment died on 3 August 1941 and is buried in Karachi War Cemetery in Pakistan.


SPR. ROBERT PURDIE, R.E.
Robert Purdie – age 25 – Sapper (2010497) 1003 Docks Operating Company, Royal Engineers.
Robert was employed as an electric crane driver in Paisley when he enlisted in April 1940. He went to the Middle East in January 1941. The invasion of Greece by Italian and Germany forces began on 6 April 1941.
Born 1918 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire as Robert Jack Boulton. Son of Emily (Boulton) Purdie and step-son of William Richard Purdie of Garroch Cottages, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire who married in 1919 in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Elizabeth Mundell (Halliday) Purdie of 23 Back Street, Thornhill who he married as Robert Jack Bolton Purdie in 1939 in Morton.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1941 and named on the Athens Memorial, Greece.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial.

LT. COL. L. R. YOUNGER, AYR.YEO.
Laurence Richardson Younger – age 42 – Lieutenant Colonel (26346) Commanding 152 (The Ayrshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Laurence was educated at Winchester College from 1915 to 1920 and after taking his degree at Trinity College, Cambridge he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1921 and joined the 12th Lancers for a time, but went on the reserve of officers in 1926. He became a Lieutenant in the Territorial Ayrshire Yeomanry in 1929 and was promoted to Captain in 1936.
He was Factor, first to Sir Herbert Maxwell of Monreith, Wigtownshire and, from 1934, to the Duke of Buccleuch at Drumlanrig.
As late as 1938 the Ayrshire Yeomanry had still been a mounted regiment, but when mobilized in August 1939 they converted to artillery and were sent to Orkney to help defend Scapa Flow. Laurence was officially posted from the Reserve to the Regiment in February 1940. The regiment sailed to North Afrca in November 1942 and from January 1943 they were continually in action with 6th Armoured Division culminating in the final advance on Tunis in late April 1943. Laurence was killed near Gafour (now Qa Afur) and buried there but was re-interred in July 1944.
Born 1901 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Lieutenant-Colonel William Younger and of Katharine (Richardson) Younger of Balerno, Midlothian. Husband of Katherine “Kit” (Graham) Younger of Dabton House, Thornhill and of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1934 in Mochrum, Wigtownshire.
Killed in Action on 26 April 1943 and buried in Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery,Tunisia.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Winchester College War Memorial.

His elder brother Major (12994) Henry Johnston Younger of the 1st Lothians and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps was killed on 12 June 1940 and is buried in St. Valery-En-Caux Franco-British Cemetery, Seine-Maritime, France.

CPL. WALTER D. POSSEE, GLOSTERS.
Walter Daniel Possee – age 30 – Corporal (5110764) 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.
Date of Birth from Army records 04 November 1920
Born December Q 1922 in Aston, Birmingham.
Son of John W. Possee and of Susan A. Whitsey who married in 1915 in Aston.
Missing in Action on 26 April 1951 and named on the UN Memorial Wall, Pusan, Korea.
Also named on the Thornhill Parish Church memorial and on the Thornhill Congregational Church memorial.
